I’ve been taking cuttings of plants for many years - it’s not that I need more plants, but there’s a satisfaction in growing something yourself. I’ve taken cuttings of the same “Hot Lips” salvia that you have, along with several other varieties, and I no longer bother using rooting hormone as I’ve found that the success rate without it is about the same (just as your results seem to indicate). For a rooting medium, I generally use a 50/50 mix of peat moss (or coconut coir) and perlite. I’ve had more problems with my cuttings rotting when I use regular potting soil. Thanks for the great videos - I always enjoy watching.

That is so great to see what to do and how to get a new salvia going... So far I have only been able to drown them or watch as they wither and go brown.... It's good to know I could try to just grow a whole new plant some day soon. Thanks @SG

Thank you for these videos. I love the science experiment process behind them. I have some Salvias which I've tired FOREVER to propagate from stem cuttings from the old wood with very little luck. I will try again with the new growth and see what happens. My favorite pollinator shrub. I want to get all different colors of salvias. New subscriber.

Hi from37on! 👋 Thank you for saying that. 😉 You know, we haven't used honey as a rooting agent, but we have been asked this a few times now, so it might be something for us to try for the next cuttings we take. Have you tried it? Sounds like a great experiment! 👍

I would like to know what is in your seed starting soil. It may help the cuttings without hormone added.

Hi Laura! 👋 Interesting point and could be. Dare we say "further investigation is needed" (official monotone voice..). 😃 We can nerd out more. Yay! For these cuttings and rooting experiment, we used Espomoa Organice Seed Starter Premium Potting Mix: amzn.to/3aSxevf . Thank you for watching! 😄👍

Any thought about putting rooting hormone in the water? I like your Science Sunday. Thanks for making Covid 19 quarantine a little less boring. And don’t forget to VOTE on the election!

@Jan Awww, thanks for saying that. We try to make our videos fun and useful, so we really appreciate that. 😉 We have discussed briefly adding the rooting hormone in the water, but haven't actually done it yet. We should check the label to make sure if it says anything about that and then maybe a little more research. Then we might try it. 😲 Have you tried it before? 😃 Thank you for watching and commenting.

This is how I’ve done cuttings. Strip the lower leaves, snip the top, dip in rooting hormone and place in water. I also wanted to note that you don’t need potting soil or rooting hormones. If you have an area in your flower beds you can take the stem cuttings and just plant them in your garden beds…they will grow just fine!

Good morning, I took 12 Salvia, hotlips cuttings just over a month ago and they are all doing great inside. Which video do I now need to see for the next stage. Should I now be transferring them back in to an outside bed ? - bear in mind it's now winter here in the UK.

Hi Martin! 👋 Thanks for watching and we are soooo excited for you! Wow, great job on your cuttings! 😲 👍 Really great question. Firstly, since they are still very new plants, we would recommend that you keep them in either their pots you rooted them in so they are less stressed and get their roots better developed. We wouldn't put them outside right now because they are sooo young and vulnerable to any temperature extremes, especially fall and winter cold, not to mention lots of wet weather, which they don't usually like anyway. If you can keep them inside or at least warm while outside, then do that, but they need to not be exposed to any freezing temps or really wet conditions. Optimal growing conditions of at least 11-12 C degrees so they continue to grow and stay healthy with little to no temperature, water, or sun stress. You should plan on maybe transplanting them over the winter, if they get too big for their current pots, into larger containers, but only plant outside this next spring when the last threat of frost has past. Here is our update on our cuttings: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4fUlnWlpdSaZ9k We haven't transplanted them yet since they hadn't outgrown their pots yet, but you can see how we checked for rooting and some tips. Hope that helps and good luck. Thanks again for watching and keep up the great work! 😊😉
