If you start with a good quality brush it should last you forever. The cheap big box store brushes are ridiculous. But if you buy a good Purdy or any other China bristle brush, you should be set for life. My mom used her paintbrushes throughout my childhood and youth. She probably still has them but might not have used them for a while. You get the point.

My uncle was a life-long, high-end painting contractor; born, raised, and trained in Germany. I clearly remember as a child how he treated his tools. Your video reminded me of his diligence and patience. Most people want a quickie method of cleaning brushes, or better yet, discard the tool and don't bother with cleaning. Considering the odor-damaging chemicals in solvents, discard is not such a bad idea. But it's incongruous to using a great tool. Great tools are expensive by default. This video is not for the discard people. I wear a respirator and gloves when using oil-based products now, and I clean my brushes exactly as you do. The whole process takes longer than five minutes, but I don't care about the clock. I care more about my tools. I hang my brushes to dry. Instead of plastic yogurt cups, I use large-mouthed glass jars. I have quite the collection. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. For English-speaking crafts people around the world, this is a great learning tool.

@KJ_nyc Жыл бұрын
@@sallyhill7747 I strain mine and re-use it. Most paint sediment falls to the bottom of a cleaning jar/can. The top portion may not be perfectly clear, but it is extremely effective and re-usable when using it for a first-clean application on a very saturated brush or roller. When the spirits are beyond re-use, they go into an old-empty paint can clearly marked "chemical paint spirit WASTE." In NYC, we have special sites for chemical waste disposal. Most large apartment buildings in bigger cities require specially marked cans, and they know how to properly dispose of them. If you live in a house, contact your local waste department, I'm sure they will offer information on how to properly dispose of chemical waste. In our home, NOTHING inappropriate goes down any drain. In apartment buildings, the super or building management usually offers rules concerning disposal.

This is good advice. Using a made-for-purpose brush spinner after each rinse, and after washing will prolong the useful life of your cleaning solution and may get your brush a little cleaner. (Of course, the brush should be spun in a cardboard box, etc. to prevent spraying yourself and surroundings with the cleaner). If you are using two different paints using the same solvent, you can go from black to white paint with the same brush in a couple of minutes this way; if you did this you'd wait to do the water wash until cleaning after the second color. Wrapping the brush in the original jacket, brown paper or newspaper after washing helps it retain its proper shape and keeps dust off if it is not to be used for a while. An alternative to combining all the used cleaner is to periodically dispose of the dirtiest cleaner, and start using old #2 as the new #1. Add a new container of cleaner for the last rinse. A properly cleaned used good brush beats the pants off a brand new cheap brush. With a brush spinner, you can also clean rollers fairly easily, though this is practical only for water-based finishes. Various manufacturers make brush spinners; an example of one can be seen at twww.homedepot.com/p/Project-Select-Brush-and-Roller-Cleaner-HD-6006/202564315.

A couple of suggestions from a professional painter....use a brush comb to get paint out from near the ferrule. After spinning, drag the bristles on a bar if wet soap-as it dries, the bristles won't splay all over. After I use oils, I rinse m6 brush in paint thinner to clean then add a few drops of baby oil to keep bristles in alignment. Breaking in a brush with baby oil and getting some near the ferrule helps keep paint from settling in there. Works well for art brushes too.

I've watched your "bubble" video and then this one. I read a lot of comments on both and I'm amazed at how many people ask the same questions. I appreciate how gracious you are to respond to so many comments. Since you emphasize cleaning your brush after every use, you probably would not do this and you may have addressed it in one of these comments, but I did not see it. However, let me venture what could be a stupid question. When I paint I wrap up the wet brush well so it does not need to be cleaned before a second coat. Given that Poly has a longer dry time between coats is probably reason enough to clean between, but is there a way to protect the brush from drying out? Since you soak your brush in mineral spirits to eliminate air bubbles, could you simply store your brush between coats submerged in mineral spirits? Would that be too hard on the brush and cause it to fall apart? I'm curious, so please forgive my ignorance.
@paulsDIYsolutions4 жыл бұрын
Hey Doug. A lot of people do the wrap and even place it in their refrigerator. I can't say definitively that they are wrong. I spoke to the CEO of the Paint Brush Corp and he assured me that the glue brush manufacturers use in the ferule will hold up to virtually any solvent, so soaking overnight might be an option (but it would have to be a hanging soak so the bristles don't become permanently bent). Here's my dilemma: I love working with top of the line tools (I consider a brush a tool) and I destroyed a lot of good tools in my youth. Now in my old age I've become too damn anal to even think about anything but a thorough cleaning after every use. I couldn't sleep knowing my expensive brush may be less than perfect next time I use it. BTW in addition to possibly eliminating air by soaking (debate rages on) I found that soaking does wonders to soften and prep the bristles before use. So all that and I didn't answer you question. Should have been a politician! best . . . paul

I'm building a desk and it is ready to be finished. I will be applying Poly on sanded pine plywood with pine trim pieces, no staining. I am going to practice your technique on the underside to seal it and I could use this as a test to see if I could apply quick-dry Poly and then let the brush soak overnight (I'll cut a hole in a plastic lid of a large yogurt container so the brush will hang) before doing the next coat. Since no one will see the work, I can experiment. I hope I can discern if it works and learn all I can. Hopefully when I flip it over and do the actual top surface I'll have a solid technique. I also hope I can avoid all the problems others have encountered using quick-dry Poly.

I put them in a glass jar and leave them sit for a month or so and the resins settle out out of the solution leaving you with clear mineral spirits that can be seperated and reused. can I leave the thinner residue in the brush? Do I have to do the last step with detergent? Thanks.
@paulsDIYsolutions10 ай бұрын
Hey David. Interesting thought. I'm not sure! One issue is damage to the natural hair bristles and the stability of the glue that binds the hairs in the ferrule. Lastly if there is any resins suspended in the remaining thinner and the thinner evaporates the residue is then left in the brush. I tend to pay in the $60-80 range for my finish brushes so I'm not taking the chance. best . . . paul

Hey Mur. It's tough to go backwards. What happens is the finish hardens up close to the metal ferule and that's the part that controls the flow of the finish during application. Hard to restore that part of the brush. best . . . paul

Hey Nik. I get this question a lot! Yes, I clean my brushes thoroughly after each and every use. Brush is a tool like any other woodworking tool. I buy expensive brushes but expect a lot from them. A good brush holds a lot of liquid and doesn’t run, drip or leave brush marks. If you want a nice finish without brush marks, puddles or runs your brush needs to fresh and clean at each application. If you want to do this right and you want a reeeeally nice finish follow the steps in my video and clean your brush after each use. Hope that helps. best . . . paul

We are doing it like you show here. But is it safe to wash the mineral spirits down the drain as you wash the brush? I feel bad doing it, but I cant think of any other way. Also with paint, how to clean paint brushes without sending lots of paint into the public water system? Thanks

Mineral spirits can be reused. If you let it sit the paint pigments and finish residues will settle to the bottom and can be separated and reused.

I messed up by not using soap and water. Can I revive my brush? I used Marine varnish.
@paulsDIYsolutions6 күн бұрын
Hey Airtek. Brushes usually deteriorate when the bristles close to the ferrule become stiff and clumped together. If this is the case the brush is DOA! If not resoak in paint thinner (mineral spirits or turpenine) and work bristle through with a stiff scrub brush and comb. Then wash and dry. best . . . paul

Hey Dana. Paint thinner and mineral spirits are pretty much the same (I'm not a chemist so I know I'm gonna get trashed on that one!). Paint thinner has a rather strong aroma vs mineral spirits but both function pretty much the same. You are nor supposed to dump mineral spirits into public sewer systems. Hi K LE. I think a 2.5 inch brush will get you through virtually any project. Check out: The Paint Brush Corp, Tools for Working Wood or Gordon Brush online. You want a finish brush not an angled brush. I would keep two brushes a synthetic brush for water-based products and a natural bristle brush for oil based products. Stay away from Tools for Working Wood's Gramercy line unless you plan on doing lacquers or shellacs (they don't hold up in polyurethane). best . . . paul

Sorry if this has already been asked, but what brush would you recommend and would you recommend different brush types for stains and polyurethane?
@paulsDIYsolutions4 жыл бұрын
Hey Floyd. Yes it's been asked but its always a great question worth repeating. Brushes should match the job. For stain its just a matter of getting product out of the can and onto the piece so a cheapo throw brush like a chip brush is fine. Here the brush doesn't determine the outcome. I use cheap throw away brushes for applying wood glue, stripper, etc. For finishing you should use a brush designed for a finishing. A finish brush is typically soft, thick and has chiseled edges. It is different from even a good paint brush. It holds a lot of material, it doesn't drip or run (even when turned sideways or upside down), disburses the material evenly and doesn't leave brush marks. Lastly you need a synthetic brush fro water-based finishes (oil clumps on synthetic fibers) and a natural bristle brush for oil-based finishes (water saturates and mats natural hairs). Good finish brushes are typically not available at big box or the avergae paint store. Check out online sites like: Tools for Working Wood, Gordon Brush and/or The Paint Brush Corp. best . . . paul

Hey Scuteri. Couple things you can do. First is take it to a local recycle center or you can get a big old glass jar with a lid and pour it in and keep adding for as long as it takes to fill it. Eventually the resins will settle tro the bottom leaving you with reusable clean mineral spirits on the top. Siphen off the minberal spirits and the resin can discarded as normal waste. best . . . paul

My grandfather showed me when I was a teenager to put the old mineral spirits in a covered glass dish. The next time he cleaned his brush, he would take the lid off of the dish, and pour all of the clear top layer of used turpentine into the lid. He would use that for the first pass of brush cleaning. Then dump the reused turpentine into the bowl. Then he'd pour new turpentine into the lid, wash the brush again (just like Paul does), then dump that into the dish,,, and fill the lid with more new turpentine, and clean the brush again, and dump the used into the dish,,,, repeating until the brush was clean as it would get. Then he'd clean it again with soap and water for a couple of cycles. He always used Fels-Naptha soap,,, a very old product. He put the lid on the glass dish, and it sat until the next time he had to clean a brush. After a couple of times of cleaning a brush with this method, he'd remove all of the clear turpentine from the bowl, and then throw out the gooey varnish that had settled on the bottom of the dish. The clear turpentine he collected was as good as new, and he would use that for the complete cleaning cycle the next time he cleaned his brush, except only for the last cycle, he would use brand new turpentine. I do this same process 50 year later, and as a result, I use very little new turpentine. And the old varnish gunk I get from the bottom of the covered glass bowl/dish I put onto some paper then burn it in my shop stove (so I don't have to worry about it spontaneously combusting. I still have my grandfather's prized brush, which is made from badger hair. I have never used it, as I consider it an heirloom. He used it on his best work, and though an antique, the bristles are as soft as can be.
