Came across this two years on but great reminders. Loving your channel. I play a Shure wireless if I'm in the headliner. Generally I leave the wireless at home as sound has enough to deal with already. You can mute on the Shure pack so you dont need to unclip and the bendy arm accommodates my Joral great. A couple thoughts, you shouldn't be at war with the sound person. Get to know them at soundcheck, be nice and you'll find they will almost always have your back. Another consideration with wireless rig - be mindfull where the monitors are or you can drop that bell down there with a live mic and tick off everyone with feedback.

This is a hepful video. Thanks. One constant problem I have is not knowing how I can use a harmon mute in gigs. It's way too quiet to play without a mic, but getting the right volume and tone with a harmon mute into a mic is something I can never figure out how to do. I always have to get right into the mic and then I'm in constant danger of giving everyone tinnitus. Everyone loves the buzzy Miles sound, but I usually don't even bother trying to use it because I can't get the sound right.

So helpful man! Quick question. Why the Sm 57 over the 58? Thanks so much!
@RidgewoodSchoolofMusic Жыл бұрын
It actually doesn't really matter, the 57 and the 58 are the same mic, but the 58 has that spherical grille on the end that makes it a little more geared towards singers. The only advantage to the 57 that I can see is that if you want to play with proximity effect, you can put the mic into the bell without having to worry about hitting the grille. Otherwise, the two mics will work interchangeably.

Thanks for your quick reply! Follow up question. What is the best budget live mic for trumpet? Would it be the Shure mic?@@RidgewoodSchoolofMusic

Interesting approach that should isolate very good from other instruments on stage. What do you think about the recommendation I sometimes read to go further away from the mic (usually at least a foot) for a natural trumpet sound and even playing into it slightly from the side? I'm looking for a natural sound in a studio environment.

Do you have the brand of the clip on mic that you use?

Where would you put the microphone if you were recording something for a big band and the trumpet section isn’t the main feature? (E.g the trumpets in Toad Circuit from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe)

What mic would you recommend for a clip on mic for a budget minded trumpeter?

Hey John, I've had the same Samson wireless clip-on since 2005, and it's still cookin'! Unfortunately it looks like they don't make those anymore. If I were going to buy a new clip-on on a budget, I'd check out the Shure PGA98H-XLR or the Audio-Technica PRO 35, but admittedly I don't have personal experience with either one. Good luck! - Bobby

With my Samson Clip on I'm getting a bit of sound from pressing the valves up and down. Is there a good way to lessen this effect? would it help to put some sound dampening between the connection point and the horn or lower the gain/volume so that it picks up less?
