Proper Way to Clean A Clarinet

One of the worlds best clarinet repairers, Christian Lohff, once told me it was important to always pull your cloth through the clarinet starting from the mouthpiece. The reason was that if the clouth would be stuck in the clarinet and the string would ripp off, the rest of the cloth could be remouved by simply pulling it out of the mouthpiece.

Guys. Don't pull it through your mouthpiece like he did. There are other ways to clean out your mouthpiece. This is not one of them. Take the mouthpiece off and pull it through the barrel. About once every one or two weeks you need to wash your mouthpiece with soap, water, and either a baby bottle brush or a proper mouthpiece brush. That's it. Don't swab it. If there's a lot of moisture just dry it with a paper towel or wipe it down with the cloth but don't pull it through.

I didn't say wash your *clarinet in water. I said wash the mouthpiece. Also, if you take off the keys you can wash the body using water and soap; just don't submerge it. But yeah. Seeing as how the mouthpiece goes in your mouth it's a very good idea to wash it with dish soap and water and a mouthpiece brush ever so often.

The Monarch of Gold you can't put the body in the water I mean you can with the mouth piece and the bell but it might be better to do what the guy in the video says but the body is a no no because of the cork, the cork and water can't mix or the cork will either fall off or unwind

I'm constantly getting my swab caught on the register key tube. Today it got so stuck that I ripped half the cloth straight down the middle. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, the cloth is always unfolded and straight when I put it in.

i read some news that if you don't care for you wood wind instrument you can get a lung infection from mould and fungus that grows when you don't dry the clarinet after playing,apart from the mouth piece what is the right way to clean a non wooden clarinet.

My band teacher at heritage middle school told my class tht a dude played the bagpipes and nevr cleaned it then wen he died people found out it was cause he nevr cleaned his bagpipes

My Wooden Yamaha Mouthpiece is starting to discolor greenish and it won't peel off, It's more like it's the color of the actual clarinet, how do I take care of this...?

What did you wash it in? If you used dish soap that's what would have caused it

If your clarinet is still like that what I would do is I got mine from a music store but I would go to the place u got it and tell them they can clean it and probably give u one to borrow in the meantime

I usually clean mine whenever I am at home and practicing, but I do not clean it at school because, I just don't have time. We have lessons, and we have to get back to class. Also, when we have group band. We have 2 minutes to take everything apart.

Well, I need a new swab, but I have always cleaned my clarinet correctly! :3 I have not had a swab for a year now so my clarinet is kind of dirty, but using a bandanna also works. I just have to clean it everyday now (like I used to).

It's not a good idea to store your wet cleaning swab in the case as the moisture may damage the instrument. Let the swab dry out and put it through the wash in a lingerie bag.

Don't put it together like he did, it could break a key. But everything ells seems ok :)

Always make sure to hold down the second key down that has a hole in it. That pulls up the bridge and ensures it won't break or bend!

Tom Zheng I wouldn't suggest doing that, especially if you have a wooden clarinet.. that would ruin your instrument.. and trust me wooden clarinets are not cheap! At least not new ones

Um... I don’t think you’re doing this correctly. I’ve been playing the clarinet for six years now, and I’m no expert at cleaning instruments, but you’re making mistakes that might ruin some parts of the clarinet. I know this is old, but at least put a disclaimer or something...
