Thanks very much for the video - just remounted my shelves into to wall using some tips from this video. One technique I did: rather than use a pencil to mark a pilot hole, I used a small masonary bit in my cordless drill to create a pilot hole and then used a hammer drill (as I have thick concrete walls) to complete the hole. Shelving now secure (he hopes)!

I'm about to start building a couple of these shelf units and I'll be gluing, as well as screwing the shelves in place, as the lateral instability seems to be primarily caused by only using a single screw at each end of the shelves.

Have used these shelves many times in different homes. I think they are a no brainier if you need this sort of storage. Cheaper than buying the timber and making them yourself. If you need to stain them for use in an outbuilding or loft I have found doing that before you assemble the pack is easiest. I used some fence paint for a set in the garden shed as a bit of protection. But a set in an old outside loo have survived Without staining for over 20 years. As long as it’s dry.

I have a previous IKEA system similar to this called IVAR. The shelves just sit on shelf pins so it is easier to change the shelf positions but it means fitting the metal braces is a pain in the bum. I have one in the shed. I did place some DPC under each foot but I now I think I should stain it too. Good tip. Also our 1yr old is starting to climb so might be time to fix the one in the living room to the wall.

Another tip came to mind later on. Provided you’re comfortable there are no services in the wall (I.e. you have already tested). I reckon you could have run a masonry bit of that size right through the redundant fixing hole... and it would have acted as a marker and guide for your screw hole all in one. Builders do this all the time. Drill straight through the wood in situ.

3 minutes in and I was just about to say... “Pro tip: put a 4mm hex bit in your drill-driver with the clutch set low to build these about 30 times faster”...And lo and behold...☺️. Given that DeWalt set can be had for about 25 quid on Amazon (bargain and a nice set)... I’d day it or similar is a must have for a “proper DIYer”. Think about time saved over about 4 bits of IKEA furniture... and how much you get paid per hour at work. Time IS precious! Great workaround with the mini hacksaw though.

It used to be called "GORM" - had it for many years in the garage. This stuff looks a little slimmer, but same basic design. It's served us well. Without it I suppose I would be gormless (sorry) Because you're screwing into end grain, the number of times you can re-arrange is limited without plugging the holes of course.

@@ProperDIY oh, cos I was thinking i'm going to placing the heavy loads at the bottom of the rack, with extra wooden piece placed to support the weight, while the upper racks would be used for very light stuff like stereos and all.
