When I was young I was going to fallow my studies until get into university and get my degree. But the propaganda about 1975 and the end coming around that time. Make me to give up my studies.... Guess what decades went by And now I have to accept difficult hard work heavy jobs ,.... And my health is very ruined , as so as my legs..... And I can't say no to the Job, because I need to pay my bills and live a honest life. GB is responsable for doing this to me and to many others brothers and sisters. I continue to be a deep believe in the scriptures. The GB can't make me stumble..... Because Almighty GOD YHVH and Crist are not doing anything wrong against me. But GB they make many people to stumble....... Crist is exposing everything bad done against the father,s name. Specially the crimes hidden by WT regarding CSA. What shame.... knowing that God,s Holy name has been dragged all over the Court because of this abuse. On top of this Some members of GB they continue to denied the existence of CSA. Rafael Rodriguez, That's so sad. I'm sorry that your mother struggles so financially. Unfortunately, the Governing Body doesn't seem to care, because it isn't them who is struggling financially and materially. The Governing Body discourage members from pursuing a life of riches. There's nothing with being wealthy, but greediness and selfishness over money is a problem. The Watchtower Society's discouraging of higher education certainly doesn't help. Financial and material security and stability are important. Comfort is important. The Governing Body act so clueless, and I just don't understand it.

@@b.w.7588 I can agree that greed and selfishness are a problem IF a person allows those actions to run their life. But there has to be a balance between devotion and seeking a financial solvency to live the golden years in peace. I remember growing up as a JW and constantly hearing the "last days" fable and descoraging people from pursuing a life career that will allow them to live comfortable. The GB members certainly live very comfortable.

True, the governing body asks it's members to give money without directly saying "give money", it's always a passive reminder when we all know since God is powerful and can do anything, he doesn't need our money when he's the one who made everything. That's my logic on it, it's all a ridiculous scheme to guilt trip it's members into donating and feeling not good enough as a member.

I once had an elder, who btw bought a new car every year, stand in my modest kitchen and accuse me of being materialistic. At this time, both my husband and I were working full time to be able keep a roof over our heads, along with having some serious health issues, so we were having trouble getting to meetings. And while this elder was alone with me in my kitchen, bullying me, my husband was out in the yard pruning trees and refusing to come into the house to talk. All kinds of wrong going on here. The elder was not only in the wrong by being alone with me, he was afraid to go out in the yard to talk to my husband, the supposed head of the family. He made me feel I was a terrible person for missing meetings and putting the welfare of my children and my health ahead of attending meetings. Oh the arrogance of that man. 😅 I’m out now and free after 50 years of that nonsense and never felt happier and content in my life.

same old rhetoric... justice of the peace elder in London Ontario was just like Lett. same hypocrisy. urged my partner and I to live an austere Spartan life, meanwhile he was saving for his freedom 55 pension scheme, his property portfolio, his lakeside cabin and then he started his own private practice, all this was hidden until he retired and when I raised questions of the validity of his counsel I was taken to the back room and raked over the coals .,. because I did as I was told np pension no early retirement no property portfolio or investments overtime was discouraged meanwhile he has multiple pensions as well as rental income and his business is very lucrative they have a lot to answer for

I think what Lett is getting at is that if he can get naive witnesses to believe materialism is wrong, then whatever money they might have spent on material things could now be donated to watchtower, perhaps for the completion of their new media center. We all know how they operate on sowing guilt into the psyche and then finding a scripture they can twist to back it up, and then to say how it pleases Jehovah to make such sacrifices. Their rhetoric is so transparent.

Phil's Gaming & Reactions, I don't think a lot of JWs are as "happy" as they try to convince the rest of the world. I think for members who are in desperate situations of whatever sort, they cling to their faith because it gives them comfort and they are perhaps less likely to question their beliefs. They're persuaded into believing some bad things for bad reasons.

What is the point of remaining poor with no basic needs, I remember I once took that route and man that was settling up future poverty. The top guys (Elders) said simple life but they had all papers and materialistic, from then I said no more. My JW parents recently sold their 3 bdrm house for a 5th wheel, and they are miserable. But somehow, I guess that's the way to be in this religion - the more miserable you can demonstrate yourself willing to be in this one life you now know yourself to have, the more worthy you are of a great life in the next world the leaders of this religion are promising you if you buckle down and give them the little extra money you don't even have. That, and recruit more people to do the same. Does Stephen Lett have a side job? Where did he get that $250,000 to invest with his brother? Is his brother a JW? If not, isn't something so intimate as a business investment with a worldly person a big no-no? My parents are firm believers in this religion, but even after 50 years have no actual status in it or recognition, as they've never pioneered or risen up the ranks. But they sacrifice everything but the very basics materially in submission to it. But even then, it's probably not enough based on the complete standards. Very sad.

In 1980, when I was looking forward to college, the elders came to my house to talk my parents out of letting me attend college. They said earning a degree would be a waste of money and effort because the world would be ending soon. I’m 60 now, career almost over and still hearing the same rhetoric. So the idea is to keep the flock poor so they have fewer options to leave. But the kicker is the gaslighting about materialism. The nerve.

Not only does this subject of being temporary residents show Letts to be a total hypocrite but it shows the whole organisation to be hypocritical. They had perfectly adequate headquarters in Brooklyn New York to see them though to "the end". However they saw an opportunity to make a pile of money and make their lives more comfortable in new luxurious buildings in the countryside. As Letts said you would not spend money on a building knowing you were in the last,last ,last days of the system let alone spending billions of dollars on new ones. Irrespective of one's religion or lack thereof, anyone can be a materialist. I think it's real hilarious that Lett goes around shaming JWs for pursuing a life of materialism to any extent, especially when he must know that there are Witnesses who really struggle, and the Watchtower Society's policies can and do have an effect on members' lives -- even in areas related to money or to material possessions. Stephen Lett does this while he and his wife invest a few hundred thousand dollars into a piece of property with his brother, and then he tells Witnesses to remember that "you're only a temporary resident in Satan's systems of things". I bet you this man was highly spoiled as a child to where he doesn't have any perspective outside of his own. I think that applies to other Governing Body members as well. In JW culture, it's one standard for the Governing Body, one standard for your rank-and-file JW, and another standard for everyone else. The hypocrisy is just too astounding.

Come to find out, we aren’t allowed to date because even though she legally got a divorce from an abusive, dangerous and mentally unstable husband, she has no “proof” he was cheating so they won’t allow her to get a “scriptural” divorce. Even though he would sneak out after they went to sleep, go to the bar and have random women drop him off at their house, he hasn’t admitted to having sex, so that’s it for her until he does, dies, or gets remarried himself. He knows he has this control over her and even though he was putting her life at risk, he’s in good standing, she’s frowned upon for leaving him. She must remain single for the rest of her life according to them, this includes dating me or even being seen alone together, or else she will be disfellowshipped and shunned by all her friends and family. We’ve just been hiding it from everyone but I know it’s hard on her and I feel terrible. I started doing some research once I learned how messed up they are and that’s how I found this channel. It’s been immensely helpful as has talking to other like yourself. Anyway, cheers!
