It's interesting to see how attitudes to open plan has changed over the years. Style trends for kitchens, flooring & furniture are another thing that are fun to watch change on this show. (And hair & clothing trends!!) And as an Australian (who has also lived in the UK) this show & other real estate shows highlight cultural differences between the countries in relation to expectations. Most Australian homes have a separate laundry (utility room), & have a bathroom without a toilet, it is often in the laundry. Open plan is usually standard in any house built after the late 1980's. A standard home in Australia is typically single story. The other thing Australians seem to expect is a double carport or enclosed garage.

Apropos budget, what I've learnt from this show is that, typically, one needs to have done this several times before getting it right. It doesn't seem to matter what Sarah tells people, they seem to need to EXPERIENCE making the mistake BEFORE they learn (I know I would absolutely mess up the budget, like ALL THESE PEOPLE DO!).

I love the very end where Beeny admonishes us for taking unnecessary risks! (Very Capricorn). (I am leaving too many comments!) Thank you for all these lovely shows!!!

@@SADK-bn4qy Of course! That's why you're so thorough! Capricorns get bad press but are generally stellar, hard working individuals!

A utility room with a random toilet 🚽? That looks ridiculous! Lol

All that money and high expectations and not even a place to hang your clothes in the master bedroom. That toilet, surrounded by windows and doors! 😂

For a few years, while they're little... and then you have rules and attractive bins (a trunk?) they have to put everything in at the end of the day and that teaches them how to tidy up (a very useful life lesson!). That's what I'm telling myself.

Once again, they begin with a recipe for failure. Why wouldn't people include legal fees as a cost??

Wait, I don't understand this... the toilet is in the utility room? Makes no sense. Needs a dividing wall and a door obviously.

With a sizeable clear glass window that’ll require permanently closed curtains or blinds & door to the outside of the house. They were better off not bothering.

I would want a dedicated room for the children and all their mess, but I also like open plan. What's a girl to do?!?! The 'decorating' doesn't hold up (mixture of colours, textures, etc. Dark blue rug on a very light carpet and no transition colours); looks as though thrown together. As always; picture hung too high, which throws a room off balance. People KNOW it doesn't feel right but don't know why. Otherwise, I think they did a great job with the house and garden; the addition was perfect. It added so much space to the house.

Don’t like the downstairs layout!!! The kitchen should be in the extension with the doors to the garden!!!

Sarah was behind the times on her opinion of open concept living. Even back then it was the preferred floor plan of most buyers. I've seen her make this mistake in a lot of episodes.

Isn’t it funny that Sarah who is supposed to be the know it all in property development did not see open plan living coming. most families who buy these kind of houses want it. It’s the rage…

Let's start this huge project, and then get pregnant and plan a wedding, all at the same time! The bedrooms - with no closets - are horrible, IMO!

The bedroom decor was awful as was the colour of the bathroom. That toilet in the utility room was not very private. All in all I did nit like this renovation at all .

Odd that people do things (toilet in the utility room without it's own wall) that are SO OBVIOUSLY wrong!!

Sarah, at first I was strongly on your side, but after watching many of your shows, I am starting to cross over to the developers side. You get a bone between your twwth and you just wont let it go! In this instance the cherry chicken is lovely and looks lovely and is not dark. The wooden floor looks just fine, the time for machy machy is over and now it is about complementing eachother, and they do! I am not a lover of open design, I love my different rooms where onoe person can watch TV, whilst another can chat with a friend in another room, and yet another person cn cook in peace without being interrupted constantly. But the general public like being able to see their children play, whilst a friend sits at the island drinking a glass of chardenay. I cannot think of anything worse. I prepare my food before my guest arrive so I can be with them and sweating away in the kitchen. All the is needed to be done is put it in the oven and take it out just before eating. As far as children toys everywhere, Have allot of storage spaces where it can all be hidden after the little tikes go to bed. I do agree with a downstairs toilet, after all do you really want all your guest going upstairs everytime one has to pee?
