Many of those houses had live in maids and yard Boys. The small room with a sink was the laundry room. I could show you many things about that base. I started going there in 81. My last time there was 1990. I know much has changed but I can see that many things haven't.

You are actually looking at old on-base housing units. Those buildings are very old. I lived over in the old binnictican housing on Kulumpit. Unit #54 b. 84 - 86. I worked down inside what used to be the Naval Magazine area. I worked in a place called Missile Maintenance Unit 1. You are bringing back some great memories mate.

I don’t remember the exact house number right now..what i do remember is that it is a duplex type house, like most of the houses in the neighborhood, overlooking the mountains down on the south of the house, and we are not too far away from the Kalayaan swimming pool.

Subic Bay was closed by the US Navy in 1992 after the nearby Pinatubo volcano erupted in 1991 and a deep layer of ash began to cover the base causing the US Navy to have to evacuate. Years later, when the volcano stopped erupting and was considered safe again, the US government turned the base over to the government of the Philippines, because it would have cost too much to clean away all the ash and undergrowth and repair all of the buildings and streets and infrastructure. The Philippine government then established the free zone and sold most of the former base to private buyers. The trashed unit you suspected "termites" in was what they all looked like when they were bought by developers years after they'd been abandoned and had been left to the weather to rot before the government decided to sell those properties to private owners. Some parts of the base were relatively intact, even after many years, but some carport roofs, and roofs of other structures, had caved in from the weight of the volcanic ash. The first building where the Air B & B units were is a former Navy Barracks where unaccompanied junior enlisted sailors would have resided. The developers have combined two separate rooms, where there would have lived two enlisted servicepersons per room into one single-bedroom unit. The "condo" you showed him next was a former junior officers' quarters - usually a duplex with two units side-by-side - where accompanied 01 - 03-grade officers would have resided. That unit is essentially unchanged since it was built in the mid-sixties. The street where there were four units with the yellow door garages per building, that you called "townhomes" would have been where accompanied junior enlisted or NCOs, grades E4 to E7, would have resided. Those would originally have all been carports. Whoever bought them enclosed them and put the doors on. The basketball house is a former SOQ (Senior Officer's Quarters for 0-6 grade and above)) that's been renovated and updated inside and has had more than half the original peaked roof (including the rafter portion of the roof trusses) removed and then a concrete slab placed for that basketball court. The basketball court looks pretty old but a flag-grade officer probably could have had it done without anyone grousing about it in those days. Structurally, it was a really bad idea and it probably leaked like a sieve at some point. The last set of duplexes on the video were senior enlisted/mid-grade officers' quarters (grades E8, E9, and 04 & 05). Subic bay has come a long way. I looked at a video of the place done about seventeen years ago and at that time most of those quarters, and most of the commercial buildings on the base, and even the streets, were pretty rough after a decade-and-a-half of being abandoned without any maintenance being done..

This is a fresh video. Please let me know what is available. I would like to wither lease or rent. I need two bedrooms, but I would like three or even four. A bedroom on the ground floor would be best, but not absolutely a deal breaker. I have lived on base twice so I am familiar with the area. I was assigned at Subic and in Cubi. I need to know about schools and costs for a first grader. What is the cost of a decent used car. A cheap furnished place to start our May be the way to go, then look for a nice place to remodel and then retire. I love the area. God bless, I will look forward to hearing from you. I know you are Australian. How do you make your living. Like you, I do not dos lot of sports. A home clean, decent and about 1200 square foot or a bit more, on up,would get ne started. Happy Easter. God bless!

Jim Claire Hi Jim, Happy Easter 🐣 to give you a good idea on rentals I recommend you watch my latest vlog entitled where to live and rent in Subic Bay. My mate just rented a duplex villa for 28K php per month. You would need to drive around and take a look to see whats available now. Keep in mind. Nowadays you will need negotiate. 30K p.m. is fair for a 12 month lease. You can go ever so slightly lower but need sign longer lease. Keep in mind it is getting harder and harder to find rentals and many people asking 40-50K php pm

Peter, I was wondering exactly what the long term property taxes are there if I was able to find a house there. Any veterans like me who have a SAH grant just found out that if you move to PH the ownership is the key. I was told that you have to have prove ownership. The guy with the Veterans Admin said lease holds do not qualify. For using your special adaptive housing grant (if you are seriously injured from active duty injuries). My plans since I hate winter's on East coast I am coming to shop this fall. You can't do anything until you are actually on the ground. Will be in touch shopping for tickets for September.

I had looked into using my grant there but probably will end up renting. Subic is great place. I am still looking at Guam. But the cost of a caregiver in PH compared to US is hands down win in PH.

I do not understand years on the lease and overall cost. If you buy it is cheaper, but you are tied down. If you are renting it is cheaper, but you are much freer to move. I will most likely have one domestic helper, my son and wife and of course me. My wife has family in Manila who will probably visit. How are the schools on the base? Any information is appreciated. God bless you all. Happy Easter.

Let me give you a recent example because prices have changed recently. My mate rented a duplex villa for 28K php p.m. HOWEVER if he had leased the same property over a 40 year term for example he would have probably paid ONLY 12k php p.m. for a similar property. That's a big saving BUT yes your right the issue is two-fold 1. you need the cash to pay the whole 40 year term of the lease UPFRONT and 2. Your locked in for 40 years (however you can always rent it out!)
@mcarthurspark86366 жыл бұрын
Does that mean you would have to pay 480k USD for the leasehold?

The guy or gal with the Ferrari and other "cars to impress others", may be miserable. Don't let yourself get so excited about a person's possessions OR "keeping up with the Joneses"! Modern society mistakenly defines "success" as recognition and/or Money! Both hav e NOTHING to do with a person's well-being and happiness!
