One key consideration: The Pro-800 is not intended to be a Prophet 5 clone/replacement. It’s a Prophet 600 clone, and of that instrument, it is very faithful to the sound of the original, and very faithful to the functionality of the GliGli-enhanced Prophet 600 (as it would be, considering GliGli’s developer was involved in the software for the Pro-800. The timbral and functional differences between the Pro-800 and the Prophet 5 Rev 4 are similar to those noted between the original Prophet 5 and the original Prophet 600.

… and Behringer has announced a dedicated P5 clone with ridiculous 16 voices.

@@hommesolairedivin Very! It's hard to miss in some of these cases, actually, as long as they get the right component values wrapped around the chips.

It would have been nice to have two jams with the same patch, one on the Behringer and one on the Prophet

I own both, the Prophet 5 is a superior instrument, it sounds beautiful. Nevertheless the Pro 800 is a nice synth to have, it definitely sounds 80s and analog. I like them both, they both have their own character, but if I had to pick one, I would pick the Prophet 5.

@@PeteMidi One more note for those watching. I have a Take 5 and a pro-800. I use both in my humble recordings. Each has attributes that recommend it. The Take 5 is a mature and thoughtfully designed instrument that is a pleasure to use with ample usable presets and wonderful hands-on controllers. It costst $1500. The Behringer pro-800 is a scrappy unit that produces wonderful and usable tones at an affordable $400 MSRP. If all you can afford is the pro-800, you should get that unit. You will enjoy it! If you can afford the Take 5, get that! It's is a fantastic unit! The Behringer gear will be touchstone equipment for this generation. I promise you, two decades from now, videos will be made pining for vintage Behringer gear. How do I know this? DOD pedals were consider low-tier trash in the 80s. Now, these pedals (think Tube Screamer) are highly desirable. The wheel turns. Get gear you can afford now and have a blast. That's what is important.

@@PeteMidi one other concern, Pete: the Erae II. I’ve found myself wanting one, thinking how it could be the ultimate controller. Next thought (watching some of the vids) was it looks ridiculous she. Used as a keyboard layout (or the thought of it replacing a traditional keyboard)) with its couple of octaves of dinosaur-sized keys. Perhaps all of that is reconfiguatble. I suppose I’m looking for a surface that would ‘play’ like a pedal steel guitar. The RISE2 seems to be THE DEAL-addresses all 5 points of MPE control. I’ve been watching the development of that NEW-ish knobby controller with BIG screen you recently reviewed. Nice! Such a great advance behind the MOUSE. For what it cost, I know I’d get weak and spend those dollars on a new VECTOR Synth. And then I veer off and obsess over the SOLAR 42. I’m gonna add my 2nd Pro 800 and have that 16 Voice, bargain basememt fun! YOU should check out TIM SHOEBRIDGE’s Polychainiing plugin-for sale at Cherry Audio. Pretty slick! Mark

Bit of a click bait title as I really don’t understand why you’re discussing “replacing” one synth with an admittedly similar , but different synth? It’s like saying youre replacing a Korg poly 61 with a Korg poly6- similar but definitely not the same! Be different if you had an original pro-600 to compare it to....maybe wait until Berlinger’s inevitable interpretation of the prophet 5 turns up & try again?
@PeteMidi
@PeteMidi Ай бұрын
The title refers to a previous video which gave rise to the discussion if a pro-800 could be a low-cost alternative to the much more expensive Prophet. I remember very well that the Prophet 600 gave rise to similar discussions when it was introduced in the 80s.

actually i think the biggest mistake You can do as KZbinr in the Synth community is to compare products. It gets really wild if one of the products is from Behringer. This has nothing to do with me disliking Behringer or thinking it wouldn't bring as much joy to play and to hear as a DSI synth. But in the end it is wild to have even both at the same time in the picture to me.

I Have Promised myself NOT To buy any more Synths as i have well more than i need BUT .. .. wAS Very close to breaking that promise when watching your video on the Behringer Pro-800 ..... But luckilly Pulled my finger back from the Ebay Button and reminded myself that i have an MS20 mini , an Se02 , An ODESSY and a Novation PEAK , That i am STILL Yet to spend Quality time With .. YOU Shure know how to find the Sweet Spots in every Synth you get your mitts on ...
