God's angel said that John the Baptist would minister in the “spirit and power of Elijah.” And according to Jesus, John the Baptist's ministry was the prophesied re-appearing of Elijah's ministry that prepared the way for His first coming.

Humanity would probably have been much better off if the Canaanites (Phoenicians) won out there. They seemed like a much more civilized people: port cities, ship building, Mediterranean trade, the alphabet, purple dyes, the architecture of Tyre and Byblos, and early female leaders like Jezebel and Dido. And we're supposed to celebrate Elijah for slaughtering worshippers of Ba'al (literally: "the Lord") after his no-doubt cheap parlor trick on the mount?
