Great review. Thank you for not complaing about the lack of paragraphs aas others on KZbin had and instead explaining the effect. This novel hit me like no other has since The Road. It feels like an important novel, and I've been telling everyone who will listen they should read it. It has caused some to have nightmares and others who have children have had to take breaks from it. I think that is a testament to its power.

I thought the formatting would be a challenge, but I thought paired with the present tense of the narrative, it was really effective in plunging you into that sense of things changing and corrupting faster than anyone can reasonably process what's going on. Haven't listened to this review yet but, yeah, it takes a special kind of writer to be able to pull that off. Up there with Woolf in terms of effortlessly putting into words the kind of emotional experiences that I (with my musician brain!) would insist are impossible to convey in language.

You talk about this with such insight and I appreciate that greatly. I also found it challenging and you articulated better than I can how it affected me and what I think about it.

I just finished Prophet Song. I was interested in a review as I was exhausted by the travails of Eilish and her family. What more could happen adversely to her family? Well the answer was more tragedy to come. Sort of like the frog in warm water story slowly coming to a conclusion. I also read The Bee Sting -another tragedy book. At least Prophet Song has a finish of hope. Thank you for the review.

your reviewing is really great and fruitful! I like that you say about Palestine situation, Unfortunately, the situation there is more horrible as they don't have the basic life necessities. It's my first time to read Irish literature, Paul describes dystopia in descriptive way , the fact that people life can be altered in high pace without any signs and without prediction is really frustrating. Also the author is intelligent, anyone read this novel around the world will feel that this novel was written to describe the dystopia in his country, maybe dystopia is similar to music , a language that can be understood without words! .

Great review. I really liked how it focused on the mundane everyday life. Like, how long it took for Eilish to snap out of the normal family life mindset (for example how it bothered her that her kids were missing out on their sports hobbies) to realizing that their whole life was going to drastically change forever.

Great thoughts! Loved the book but the bleakness made it a rocky read!

I think the book is very good - I think some of the hype misses the point (or at least "uses" the book to make an easy point about our current times, whereas the book, like any good fiction really, felt more universal and less simplistic than that)

I do not concur that this was brilliant. I found it pretentious and hard to connect with.
