sorry Douglas is wrong what he states is not "Proportionate" it is "equal" what he suggests would be an "equivalent response." Proportionate response in warfare can have 2 meanings a: an response to an attack that is proportionate enough to remove the possibility of a further similar attack.. for example you fire a cannon at somebody and they mount a cavalry charge to remove all of your artillery from the field, thus you are now nolonger able to fire any cannons at them. b: it can also be used to suggest Proportion in escalation... ie we have a conflict where 10 casualties are caused on each side each day. you mount an attack that increases that 10 fold so now we suffer 100 casualties and you only suffer 10, so we mount an attack that proportionately reciprocates the losses that we have sustained and therefore aim to inflict 1000 casualties upon you.. thus hopefully deterring you from any further escalation. Note we are at war. And war is cruel. And we are in the war to win it.. it would be absolutely absurd to measure all our attacks based upon the premise that you attack first, we count our losses and then respond with an equivalent attack… I mean it is only a matter of time until you make an initial attack that damages us so much we are unable to respond. Does that make sense?

This is called for all the time by bleeding heart liberals, mostly younger people, who have little experience of life, and certainly none whatever of war. The aim of someone at war is to defeat the enemy as comprehensively and as expeditiously as possible, quite the opposite of what will happen by the use of a disproportionate response. What is needed is an overwhelming response, because a quick resolution is the best result to war.

“Proportionality” is indeed a slippery benchmark. I note, with more than a little bemusement, that those that call for a ‘proportionate’ response to the latest Hamas atrocities appear to believe that it is a proportionate response to decades of alleged Israeli oppression to behead babies, rape women, parade them half-naked through streets, and abduct hostages. But, although it is clear to me that ‘proportionality’ is a hypocritical and inconsistent standard, this still does not mean that a military incursion into Gaza is the only response open to Israel. It is pretty obvious to state that Israel knows full well what an incursion into Gaza may set off, and a wider Middle Eastern conflict is not in Israel’s interest. I do not know the answers of course, but it seems to me that Israel could score a diplomatic victory if it called off an immediate strike for now, asked all parties to the negotiation table, and perhaps made such a stance conditional on the delivery of the hostages from Hamas. That might take some of the ammunition away from Hamas, who are of course trying to paint Israel as the evil oppressor. But conflicts do not exist in a vacuum. The increasingly hard-line stance of the Netanyahu government over the years played directly into the hands of Hamas. Let us also not forget that the Abraham accords and the long-lasting peace with Egypt were already softening the stance of some, mostly Sunnite, Arabic states towards Israel and it is conceivable that Hamas acted now to bring antisemitic hate back to the surface, preventing a loss of power over Gaza by what was loosely taking shape as a government by the Palestinian authority. This entire process of rapprochement, such as it was, would have benefited either side, and a deliberately moderate stance of Israel at this point may serve to get it back on track, by taking the winds out of Hamas’ sails. Clearly, in such negotiations, Israel would need to reverse what I see as a policy of creeping colonialism, re-settle Israeli citizens out of the West Bank, and perhaps re-settle inhabitants of Gaza into the West Bank or enhance its territory by an area equal to the Gaza Strip. But I can talk. I do not live in the region, and I am not subject to the human misery there. I can only hope that cooler heads - not ‘proportionate’ heads - might prevail at this moment.

The bottom line is that Hamas does not value its citizens, (hence why it uses them as human shields), and Israel does value its citizens, so how can you have a 'proportional response'. What this needs is a proper rumble, Game of Thrones style, Hamas on one side, IDF on the other, and no civilians in sight, then they can thrash out their differences, a proper adult war to see who is best, who knows, the ones that survive surrender may, after staring death in the face, become friends with their foes, just like what happens with boys in the playground, a bit of mutual respect amongst warriors.

We didn't worry about proportionality in World War II in either Germany or Japan. You fight a war and use overwhelming force to destroy your enemies. American commanders use firepower to save their soldiers blood, whenever possible. But ever since Korea, America has grown used to cease fires rather than outright victory. We've inflicted draconian rules of engagement that prevent our troops from defending ourselves, let alone inflict crushing numbers of casualties on our enemies. Douglas Murray provides a very welcome breathe of reality and if we had more like him, we'd get back to crushing our enemies and winning engagements.
