Great Idea! Try flash paper and be safe! Google search flash paper or magicians fire paper and this paper is specifically designed for what youre trying to do. It will leave very little to no ash (that will fall onto the frosting)and its a brilliant effect. (I first saw this paper on Mr. Wizard when I was a kid.) Normally you can light the paper and let go of it and it burns to nothing, just a flash so its great for tricks and special effects. I agree with other comments only the name should be on the flash paper to reveal the full question below. For safety, the paper should be lit by the man whos in on the trick so he knows what to expect. That way the bride-to-be can be back slightly perhaps recording it with her phone as a keepsake. It might work to add a single birthday candle to the 12 O'Clock position on the cake as bait that never gets lit so it makes sense why hes going at the cake with a lighter or long match. It'll also be more of a WOW when theres a giant flare up while shes thinking oh boy, 1 candle huh? Whats that about? And then she looks down the shock of the flash and then sees the question ...and tears...viola! The only way its better is if you can find a cool lighter that doesnt look like a lighter like a butane jet lighter that looks like a pen or magic wand or something. But a bbq lighter will do the trick just fine for a birthday candle. Safest option. Speaking of safety ...its first! Be sure to tell whoever lights this to check and know where to find a fire extinguisher beforehand. Also, doing this just like you are now is a great idea because you can make the whole base flame retardant (covering it with frosting). And then after the trick is done you can pull the whole thing OFF the cake when its time to eat it. That way you dont have to worry about any unburnt paper stuck to frosting or chemicals in the frosting ..its all safely contained on that little base which can go away when its time to eat. Having a photo round of the couples favorite pic together revealed after you life off the base would be a cool addition too if they are paying extra. Finally, if you are feeling especially pyrotechnic and want to do an ultimate version of this effect...you could add a fuse and attach it to a middle layer. So it starts with NAME ..that burns away to reveal I LOVE YOU and lights a short fuse at the same time so the I LOVE YOU burns away automatically to reveal WILL YOU MARRY ME? DAVID COPPERFIELD WISHES HE THOUGHT OF THAT TO PROPOSE TO HIS WIFE! GOOD LUCK!

@@bribommer1498 uh no…the ring wouldn’t get hot at all. Not even a little. It’s not going into a 500° F oven for 30 minutes, I mean really, wtf? That tiny flame doesn’t even touch it. In fact, the flame barely even melted the buttercream on the perimeter. Where it was in close contact. The ring isn’t even going to get warm, let alone hot enough to “sear” someone 🙄. A more valid concern would be disposing of the charred, burnt remnants that fall below onto the cake. Nobody wants to eat that carcinogenic mess (or the liquidized frosting) and trying to clean it off is bound to fully destroy any remaining aesthetic the cake has left.

This might have to be given at a home or outdoor space, a lot of restaurants don't allow real flames ( battery operated candles) in their dining rooms at least in CT, USA. I think a lot of guys would try to do this in a restaurant. And the ring would need to be secured or it would move drastically to a side during transportation.
