I'm an LMSW and I completely agree with your points. My advice to all students is that you really learn in field placement and once you're employed. I've been employed in homeless shelter in NYC and it is very cool being able to assist with mental health referrals, medical referrals, immigration referrals, domestic violence, etc. Learn so much and it's never boring! To avoid burnouts I take advantage of my vacation days and time off. Essential to have support system and hobbies outside of the job.

I want to help the Muslim/Religious community. It doesn’t matter where in the future, but as of right now, I want to work in Brooklyn. I am Muslim and because of the media portrayal of Muslims, I want to be the spokesperson for the voiceless. ❤️ I feel like the same discrimination and dehumanization that Muslims/Religious people face today in the media, is the same discrimination that blacks faced 400 years ago and even today in the media. The fear of black people is now the fear of Muslims.

brandiethankfulmom hi. I can answer that. I’m an lmsw in Georgia. Yes you can keep up in this field. I’m 42 btw. I am a medical social worker working at a hospital and it’s a pretty cushy job honestly. I’m also paid pretty well. I would say I probably wouldn’t be comfortable working in child protective services in the field and I’m not a fan of case management. So the jobs available vary. You would have to be careful about what area you choose to work in.

@mickey M, Thank you for answering and sharing! I really appreciate you taking the time to share. I agree with @mickey M. Honestly, your life experiences and dealing with people will put you at ease.

I believe that you can get your Masters of Social work without having a Bachelor's of Social Work beforehand. I've heard stories of others who had bachelors in marketing and other seemingly unrelated fields obtain a masters of social work. In some programs, having a BSW will cut the time it takes you to get your masters in half (1 year). Since you don't have a BSW it would take you two years. Good luck and many blessings in your journey!

Big Con is that social work is an autonomous profession, when the regulator punishes whistleblowers ( IE those of us who prioritise service users over managers' ego), so how is that either? That's the 'con' i.e. secret. Big Con is that the regulator is a private law firm, who are instructed by managers. Big Con is that social work is controlled by dishonest regulatory/disciplinary lawyers in London and Australia. UK situation No wonder Ireland has a separate Legal system from the UK!!!

The system is fucked and unless you are willing to do the right thing and have INTEGRITY you should stay away from adopting the "savior complex". Yes, technically you are "helping" people but you're telling people that the main motivator is the "CHACHING" so it is pretty obvious that this is not a career field for people who are coming from within vulnerable communities MEANING that these communities often do not get what they need... they get what they get based on the limitations of the system itself.
