BTW I like what you did with the base cabinets, I may have added a stile between the base door and drawers.

Thank you. This was very helpful. Do you have any suggestions for a basically sturdy, face-framed American kitchen cabinet from the 1950s - 60s? I’d like to keep the cabinets and do full overlay with new doors. Is this possible with the new hinges? Would this be the system you least recommended in the video?

I wouldn't bother making new cabinets like that but if they are already there, you may be able to find hinges that can do what you want. I would suggest looking at a blum or Richelieu catalogue.,

Love the frame look on the base cabinets. Any chance you could do a video on how you acheaved the look and made everything still work together?

The base cabinets are just regular frame less cabinets with a 1 1/4 gable at the ends an dividing them every 4 feet or so. The gable needs to stick out 7/8 to be flush with the cabinet face. Then there is a 1 1/4 strip nailed to the top between the cabinets and a 1 1/4 strip at the bottom screwed up under the kick.

@@skipmcgrath Thank you for this video. It was very informative. I have the same question as James. It would be nice to visualize your instructions. Could you make a video of that?
@skipmcgrath4 жыл бұрын
Hi: I don't have time to make a video on that right now, but there is not much too. The base cabinets are just regular European style cabinets with filler strips around the edges. The important thing is to make sure the filler strips stick out 7/8 " so they are flush with the doors. You can also put one on the top under the counter, and on the bottom and fasten it under the kick.

Malcolm McGrath thank you for taking time to respond. I understand the timing issues 100%.

@@skipmcgrath This is a great idea... On the gables and top/bottom strips, what material did you use, maple or mdf??? and what thickness 3/4"???

In my country faceframes are the cheapest options because you save cost by not having to buy European hinges. Entire kitchens and closets are faceframe in my country.

Exactly! The overlay cabinets all look mass produced. If I can afford it, I will go for inset face frame.

That little white box is what most of American houses have right now. That's the only cabinet you can buy at Home Depot.

Bottom line is you can get great cabinetry that's framed or frameless if your builder is good. I build overlay cabinets all time time and they have every bit of adjustability as the frameless. There's pros and cons to every cabinet style. There's not one that's ultimately better than the others. Although there are better and worse companies to buy from. I have seen luxury frameless and luxury framed cabinetry. I've seen crap frameless and framed cabinetry as well. There's pros and cons to each and each can be built well or poorly. You can't generalize all cabinetry like you did here because there will be some cases that split through the cracks and then you will look dishonest or I'll informed when a client or competitor like myself catches you red handed

The 32mm (LR32)system was not invented in the 20s or 30s. It was created in Europe in the late 40s as a way to use sheet goods and not hardwood to mass produce cabinets. It was used for low cost houses and apartments as a way to rebuild after WWII. You will never walk into a high end classic home and see frameless cabinets. It is used now by cabinet builders to cut cost to people who don't know any better or buy crap from IKEA or Walmart.

I agree. I really dislike the frameless look. It reminds me of Ikea furniture you put together with a screw driver. I've been doing cabinets for a long time and I've always made face frames. They have a more traditional and classic look. I also dislike European hinges. Too much adjusting.

Hi Malcolm, I watched your video on you tube. My name is Birdie Miller, I'm a cabinetmaker in NJ. I think you will like the video I posted on you tube. I addressed some of the same issues you talked about. Maybe you would like to check it out. Take care. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2mzY4iXidejgs0
