In the US you can find Vandas at Kroger for VERY inexpensive once the blooms fade, but only once a year. I have 4 now that I paid $7 with dying flowers. They came in huge acrylic vases.

Vandas are by far my favorite orchids. I was terrified of them at first, but gave in and got a beautiful NOID from the grocery store in a vase. Super low maintenance, blooms twice a year reliably, and it grows still on my office windowsill 2 years later. People always ask if it’s fake, since the flowers are so perfect. By far the most adaptable and low maintenance of all the orchids I’ve owned. I’ve only managed to kill one seedling that was a freebie from another order. Only one out of 20 kill ratio is far better than my experience with other orchid genera. And the no need to repot is just another bonus. All in all, Vanda alliance is my favorite, home or office. Anyone scared of them shouldn’t be, you might discover that they are the most rewarding plant you can own :)

Lisa Soehren I’m in Austin, Texas. It’s so far south that even in dead of winter we never get less than 10 hours of light a day, so that probably is most of why I’m so lucky. I have a hard time keeping phals shaded so they don’t burn, lol

@@andreagaydou4959 I'm in Houston and same! I killed so many phals trying to figure out how to keep them alive in this humidity. I finally got it worked out and got a Vanda and was terrified....for no reason. I now have two and they are the easiest plants I have now. Dendrobiums do great in this climate as well!

In southern Texas...I have found that even the 'hobby' vandas are MUCH easier than a phal. I finally worked out how to keep a phal alive and thriving and was nervous about getting a vanda orchid. It is VERY high humidity here, even in the house. They're growing so well and being able to see the entire plant helps you to get ahead of any potential issues. I have them on hooks hanging over my window curtain in small baskets with no substrate.

Yes, this video was very helpful. I just went outside to the patio and moved my Vandas from being right next to the shade cloth where the more shade loving orchids are to where the sun really hits the shade cloth (tan colored, lets in more indirect light) on the South and West facing sides. This video helped m realize they may be happier there. Thank you!

I have a SSW floor to ceiling window that turns my living room in a perfect greenhouse. I'm growing tropical plants no problem. The temperature rarely goes below 21*C. Ambient humidity is usually around 50-60% and I have a humidifier for when humidity drops. I have a fan to ensure good air circulation. I am growing air plants with no issues. Somehow it took me 3+ years to get a Vanda 😂 cause I was terrified of them. I have one now in a glass vase on the coffee table right in the middle. It is definitely a conversation piece. I have four trees in this room (one is a hibiscus that blooms a lot). I have an entire wall of vining variegated plants. I have other orchids. I have a very diverse collection of shapes, colors, and textures. I have color changing foliage. The first thing everyone notices is the Vanda, and I find that very interesting

I agree with your pros and cons, for my home conditions...I have two rather large Vandas with unruly roots going every which way. They take up a lot of my grow space, and as you said, high light too! I've resigned myself to only purchasing the compact or mini's going forward and have quite a few Neo. falcata type hybrid vandas, now. Two of my more compact and fragrant vandas are Rhyn. ColmMarie and Perreiraara Bangkok sunset. My favorite fragrant mini is Neostylis Lou Sneary!

I mix up some miracle grow in a large watering pitcher. I just slowly pour the water over the roots to drip dry. You don’t HAVE to water them daily. But daily plain water is better. Fertilizer once a week or two. In general, I think most common orchids need more light & more water than people think. I’ve been getting my phals to bloom all year. (Finally!)

Hi Danni, I need your help as I have no experience with vanda orchids and I recently took one home from my workplace cos no one took care of it. It had a lot of blooms but they all dried up and dropped. It was in a black plastic pot (only roots in pot) and when I took it out, all the roots had taken to the shape of the pot, and in the middle of the root system was bark chips. The roots are all white and I don't know if they are still alive. I placed it into a glass jar after I soaked it without removing majority of the bark chips because most of it were stuck to the roots. On the second day, there was snow mold growing and I used hydrogen peroxide but the mold grew back. The roots are white throughout even after being soaked in water but the leaves are plentiful and look healthy. May I have your opinion on what to do? I don't know if it can be saved, or should I just throw it away... Appreciate your time and expertise to respond. Thank you.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi! 1. No need for coal, but if you really want to, it won't harm the orchid (if it doesn't contain fire boosting chemicals) 2. That sounds like a lovely climate for Vandas! Hot and humid is what they like, just shelter it from direct noon sun, as it may burn the leaves ☺️

I'm not sure did you accidentally replied to me, but I'm no expert in vandas. But I try to help. If you want to get rid of mold, you have to get every piece of bark chips out. They may be really stuck in roots, but I often get them out by gently rotating it. Mold is really hard to get rid of. I have tried everything with my mini phal that had mold on roots, I used really soft toothbrush to remove mold and then sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide 3%. My vanda roots takes time when they absorb water and turn green, I soak it 1-3 hours every other day. And mist roots every morning. I have noticed that my vanda is really thisrty and roots turn back to silvery in no time. Maybe plant is so dehydrated, that it needs longer soak? Hope you get mold solved out, it is really nasty thing to deal with. But orchids are really tought plants!

Actually Vanda orchids can stand a period without being watered (for sure if it does not las two long); but for example 2 weeks without being watered is ok. Only thing is that if you have flowers they witll wither and if you have growing bud it might die then. But otherwise the vanda is used to not being watered quite a long time even in its natural environment in south-east Asia.
