Bless your heart dude. Trying to sell Danville is an admirable challenge. Danville has a serious image problem. It is not a pretty city. From any angle driving in, it is not attractive. It is old, musty, dirty and dank looking. It always looks like it's getting ready to rain at any time. Dan River looks like a swamp. The river walk area looks dark and uninviting at night, especially near the Amtrak station and the Dan River Crossing. I know it's an old industrial town, but it needs a lot of spucing up. Neighborhoods. It's not a lot of nice ones. I wonder if city leaders ever drive though town to look around. There are too many raggedy homes, chopped up streets, and unkempt neighborhoods. I know some residents don't care about their yards, but the city sidewalks and median strips are not mantained as well. Trash is everywhere. Where is the community pride? Yes, the housing market is competitive because you have so fewer good choices. The crime is bad. Danville has always had a high crime rate. Nothing has changed since the 70's. It has only gotten worse. The people aren't as friendly as you say. The surroundingl towns or areas, like Gretna, Chatham, Martinsville are friendlier and more attractive. The economy is bad all over in southwest Virginia. NAFTA killed manufacturing in America especially in small towns in southwest VA. Cities in those areas are struggling to attract a tax base to support the schools and services. Schools are medical services are subpar. The hospital, Sovah Health, gets worse with each takeover. Not being near a major Interstate, lack of an airport, and limited train and bus services hurt as well. The VA Breeze buses are a welcomed addition to the state. At least it has two bus routes from the city traveling to different parts of the state ending in Washington, DC. Amtrak only makes two stops daily: leaving around 8:15 AM going north, leaving at 11:30 PM going south. The station needs a handicap ramp out front. If the train is late coming in at night, pray that the lone guard is still there so you can walk from the tracks through the station to get to the front. Shopping, restaurants, entertainment: meh. Standard small town offerings. I find it ironic that you mention all of the other places to travel from Danville. That may be a selling point for some people. I don't see the reason to live in a town when I have to drive hours away to another for what is lacking where I live. I have nothing against small towns. I loved growing up in one. However, it still has to have its own charms and attractions for people to live there. Lastly, the casinos. Bad, bad, idea for Danville. It may bring a few more jobs but trust and believe, the crime is going to get worse. The police department is suspect. I never see them in all of my years going to Danville or going through Danville. I assume they have one. I guess they are solving crimes, somewhere. So why did I click on the video? I actually had Danville on my long list of possible retirement towns. I still see areas outside of Danville that would be nice. However, I see too many negatives for me to live in that area. Things may change for the better in 5 to 6 years. Until then, I have to pass. Good luck in your business though!!

We appreciate your comments. Danville is actually going through a transition and there are active committees changing all of what you mentioned. According to the Danville PD Times, the only source for crime and community news in Danville crime is down in all categories. 20% down in violent crime, 28% down in burglaries, 16.1% down in gang related incidents. I have to applaud the Danville PD for generating this newsletter and doing an awesome job in lowering the crime rates, but most importantly hosting and attending 87 Community and Youth Engagements. Thank you for watching and helping bring attention to what is happening in Danville VA and how we're getting better one day at a time!

@LIVING IN DANVILLE VIRGINIA Thank you for responding. I appreciate the updates and your efforts to make Danville better. I am from Martinsville, so I am familiar with the small town struggle. Some of the same issues I have with Danville are the same that I have with Martinsville. Even though I left in 1983, I am still connected to the area. As you may also tell, I am very familiar with Danville as well. Martinsville has the same challenges as Danville, which I stated earlier. However, the traffic reversed from Danville to Martinsville when I lived there. Most of the factory workers came from Danville and Eden and Stoneville, NC, to work there. NAFTA, population shifts, improved technology, and lack of opportunities helped to kill the factories. Now, my friends who in Danville work at Nestlé or Goodyear. I am not sure if the New College Institute partners with Averett University. I know a few students commute from Martinsville to Averett. Again, I appreciate you responding l. I sincerely mean it when I say, good luck. I admire a person who works hard and wants to better their community. Real agents can be excellent ambassadors in the areas in which they live. P.S. I may be biased, but Martinsville edges out Danville esthetically. Even though Berry Elliott and Rives Brown has the lock on Martinsville real estate, you may want to sell there as well. North of Martinsville, closer to Rocky Mount and Boone, is absolutely gorgeous!! Great vacation home potential!! God bless!!

I lived there too for all my life. My husband got sick and they tore down my home with in 3 months after he got sick. My home was paid for. But the city decided to tear it down. So beware if you buy a home and the city wants the land, they will find a way to get rid of you.

I lived in Danville for about 2 years while in a relationship with a female who has lived there her entire life. I'm from Richmond which is where I moved back to after we decided to end our relationship. At any rate, several other cons I noticed about the city were the cockroaches! It seemed like every house/apartment we moved into (3) there was a cockroach problem! I, for one, hate bugs so this was a pretty big issue for me. Another con I was quickly made aware of was the crime in the area- especially with regard to drugs. There are quite many sketchy areas for those that may not feel comfortable in that environment. Lastly, I had am unbelievably difficult time securing a job in Danville. It seemed as if, at the time, there were absolutely no opportunities.

I will tell you about danville utilities..it is horrible. I left danville over it a split foyer home new..cost me between 300 to 600 a month .this was in the 80's. I moved to chatham area in the county in a 1500 more square foot house and my electric bills are nothing and I run 2 hot water heaters each floor has washer dryer and central air and heat. Etc Plus I run electric fencing on 20 plus acres and some months I'm under 200 dollars. I also pay 9 extra for a security light. I love Mecklenburg electric...2 times a year you don't get a electric bill because it's a Co op so profits are distributed to the members. Which is you and covers the electric..my friends in danville now pay between 500 to 1200 a month for electric. I would never ever buy another house with danville electric hooked to it..its also very rude people in the office. Hope this helps

I own a house in Danville. I have lived and worked all over the world, so have a number of different experiences, countries, and cultures to compare to Danville, and more broadly, the United States. Here are some Pros and Cons, and yes, the Cons list is a long one. Hope this helps. Pros: -- Cheap housing. One can buy a single family home with a yard for $80K. I have lived in places where that same house would cost $500K or more. -- Fishing. There are some huge blue and channel catfish right down the road. Yes, they are safe to eat. -- Danville Community College (DCC). DCC is much stronger academically than Averett "University", at a fraction of the cost. The presence of DCC was a factor in my decision to buy in Danville. -- Potential for economic growth. This is a potential con, as casinos do not seem to make the towns in which they are built better, they just make the (corrupt) local government rich. Cons: -- Corrupt, ineffective law enforcement. Officers harass and intimidate law abiding, tax paying citizens, as it is easier than actually pursuing violent criminals. They very seldom leave their vehicles, but still don't enforce traffic laws. West Main St has a posted speed limit of 25mph. The average vehicle speed is roughly 50mph. Several pedestrians have been killed crossing that street, but no actual law enforcement of traffic calming is forthcoming. -- Unconstitutional city ordinances. There are several that violate the U.S. Constitution, most notably their obscenity ordinance, among others. Law enforcement, backed by city government, violates citizens' First and Fourth Amendment rights. -- Provincial, isolated culture. I have been called "Out of State" so often that I am considering having a t-shirt made with that logo. Everybody seems to know everyone else, and they are also into other peoples' business. Nosiness, disguised as "Southern Hospitality". Strong, genuine, unvarnished, traditional racism, with lots of U.S. flags flying on porches, (though the flag flyers have never been out of the state), and of course large Confederate flags. -- Low per capita income. This was very obvious to me, from the start. Doesn't seem to slow "investment" in huge, shiny new pickup trucks. The State shakes down poor people in every convenience store. There are lines to purchase lottery tickets, by the stack. Food Lion is packed on one or two days per month, when benefits checks arrive. -- Shortage of genuinely skilled labor. Lots of dudes with nice trucks and business cards who have no qualifications whatsoever in their trade, and a very poor work ethic. These same guys shake down the unaware. See "Out of State", above. -- Church people and churches everywhere. (No chance any of these many churchgoers are criminals.) Lots of proselytizing, signs, and givings of unwanted blessings. Low tolerance for religions other than Christianity. I do not have god beliefs of any kind, but I sometimes feel as if I am living under some sort of Christian Taliban. -- Depressing overall "vibe". It is palpable -- Danville really is the Detroit of the South! Now, before you git yer dander up and tell me I should move away, I knew all of the above before moving Danville. I invested in Danville intentionally. One gets what one pays for in Danville, and gets it good and hard. Peace.

Nice people are leaving as the arrogant rude northerners overtake it, There is no traffic enforcement in Danville, traffic speeds and ignored traffic lights and signs. Downtown is garbage unless you like to drink. The home prices are ridiculous. The city “leaders” are destroying land and erasing history as fast as they can. The lifts you speak of are unaffordable. The trails are no where near 23 miles the mountain bike trails were until city council destroyed miles and miles of it and scrapes the woodlands flat. The Riverwalk is falling apart. The casino will not pave the streets in gold as the casino will be stand alone and nothing will “spring up” because of the huge overly tall eyesore it will be. Danville is being sold out and destroyed at an epic pace. Overpriced overly dangerous and overcrowded. And after the omnipotent city council destroys the white mill dam it will be Dan Creek

Home prices in Danville are more modest than other places, and real estate taxes are very low. Home prices are high everywhere, but lower in Danville than almost anyplace else. You need to compare some other nearby cities, Greensboro, Lynchburg, Durham, and you will see how affordable Danville is.

I would have to agree with VA24541, home prices here are a lot cheaper here than most places. Low inventory along with high demand for housing has driven home prices up at a national scale. We also have to remember that more companies are moving into the area besides the casino. Great progress has been made downtown as well with the help of the Economic Development Office and the great entrepreneurs that are conducting business there. Are you looking for a home in the area and just not finding what you're looking for?
