I've moved this year to Newport News and I love it here! I'm seeing a lot of comments about how horrible it is and there is nothing to do. I think this is all relative to your life's experience. I live in an area that is quiet and safe with the cutest houses and easy access to amenities. There is plenty to do here plus lots more within an hours drive. I've lived in towns as small as 200 people, as large as NYC and everything in between. This video does a great job highlighting the many different feels and areas of NN. If you like living in the midwest, small and medium towns and cities, then this probably isn't the place for you to set up roots. And that's okay!

Allow me to comment about the city where I grew up and have lived in for most of my life. I've worked, lived and was educated uptown, downtown and midtown. There are areas of crime from neighborhoods past Denbigh Blvd, down by Oysterpoint all the way to downtown which is equal to at least 4 of the other 7 cities. ( Va Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Hampton. ) The problem with your pros and cons are .... as an agent ... you either really don't know this City or you've heard some stories. Examples of Great People, places and things not mentioned in the Southside PROS...- (King-Lincoln Park on the water I might add... quiet areas , fishing piers, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Aaron Brooks, Boys and Girls Club, Doris Miller Community Center, Downing Gross, STEM and Achievable Dream Schools where many upper Newport News kids attend., Brooks Crossing Community Center., Chesapeake Avenue area, Christopher Shores where the Senator resides, Great Churches, so on and so on.... Good areas and some not so good areas are everywhere you go. One thing I can say is there are some awesome people in this city. Need more information, contact someone who knows.

I’m worried about crime though and have been consulting the crime map when I browse homes online. I’m coming from Seattle and wonder how the crime rate compares. The entire area seems to have a ton of things to do and it looks like a freakin’ adult playground to me! Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement, beaches, theme park, history and art museums, lots of restaurants, huge outlet mall, beautiful parks and nature trails, easy access to two airports, summer concerts and festivals, farmers markets, upick farms, and there’s even an IKEA and Trader Joe’s! I’m so excited to move and I know I’m going to love it! 🥰

Could anyone say why the word 'news' is in the name of the city? Don't really think the "Newport" part's all that weird as we have one here in Oregon just called "Newport"
@pashon4percushon3 жыл бұрын
supposedly the 'News' comes from when Christopher Newport reached land being the Pilgrimage of America started in Virginia, news reached back to England that Christopher had discovered land and started a city. Oh, Sam, Sam, Sam. I know there's stuff you can't, or shouldn't, say. I've lived on the Peninsula my entire life and if I had money, even a lot of money, I would NOT choose to live in Newport News. Like you said about Portsmouth, Newport News is a city where desirable areas and more difficult ones are separated by mere blocks. Crime maps show the concentration of crime but not the crime "sprawl." And if you live in one of the most elite areas (north of CNU on Warwick Blvd, turn left, go to the river) when you leave your neighborhood, you are faced with some of the most mind-numbing suburban sprawl you can imagine. (Hampton, where I live, is no better, btw) While not VB caliber, traffic going anywhere midtown is just awful. You did mention some wonderful oases - Mariner's Museum, and the park surrounding it, are spectacular. The Virginia Living Museum is great. And then there's .... nope, that's it. ;) OK, Newport News Park is good. City Center is OK for a couple of the restaurants, a nice movie theater, and lovely fountain. City Center is not a shopping destination. Period. On the other hand - MIDTOWN EATS!!!! I haven't been in a couple years, which is crazy, since it's one of my all time favorite eateries. Diner style setting with food prepared by a true chef. I would have recommended it to you if I had remembered it. Your comments about traveling by the bridge-tunnels - sometimes a breeze, sometimes turn off your car, it's going to be a while. But on the average they are a bloody nightmare. If you have an appointment on the other side of the water that you must be on time for, you leave an extra hour of travel time, just in case. And "just in case" means pretty frequently. I know I don't normally sound so negative, maybe it's a bad day. Maybe familiarity has bred contempt. I hope not. But some home buyer seeing this just "asked a neighbor." Btw, the locals don't say the second "w" in Warwick. We sat war'ick, or, lazily, even wark. LOL (sorry for the lengthy post)
@samsansalone4 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the detailed feedback! Yeah, people seem to have the most contrasting opinions about Newport News more than any other Hampton Roads city. Still plenty of suburbs, too. I'm glad you mentioned the pronunciation! The people I know in Newport News pronounce the extra w, so I'll make sure to set the record straight! I didn't know that.

Newport News is not a good place to raise a family. The crime most of the way down Jefferson is bad. Pockets of Warwick Blvd are bad also. There are so many areas of this city where you should watch your back. It is progressively getting worse as well. There are a couple nice parks, the very northern part of Newport News still has some decent areas. Hampton is getting worse much more rapidly but no one wanting a quiet life should move to these two cities period.

@samsansalone4 жыл бұрын
Hey hey! So glad you enjoy my videos! And happy they're helping you so far. There are plenty of dog-friendly areas, especially in Virginia Beach itself, as there are over 200 publicly-funded parks in the city. There are several that are larger than most and most of those have great areas for dogs. Is that the kind of thing you're referring to? As far as the off-season/in-season, the primary differences would be most felt at the oceanfront itself. Otherwise, it might not feel much different regardless of time frame because the rest of the city is still filled primarily with year-round residents. But the oceanfront is super quiet in the late Fall/Winter.

I grew up in NN and now live in Colorado. You glossed over the Denbigh/Ft Eustis area and its' decline. Back in the 80s and 90s NN decided to move a lot of the section 8 and low income housing to Denbigh (Specifically Courthouse Green area). The Warwick Blvd Corridor from Oyster point rd to James City county has SIGNIFICANTLY declined in those years. What most natives would call "Midtown" (Hidienwood, Shore Park, Hilton, City Center) are the "Nicer" areas. But, Despite having one of the thriving malls and some decent retail surrounding it, it's kind of turned into a ghosttown outside those areas. One need only look at the lack of national chains and the abundance of Payday Loan, Check Cashing and Car Title Loan spots to see. The closed businesses that used to only plague downtown have gotten MUCH worse city wide. Vacant stores and restaurants reveal the truth of the median incomes in the area. Stoneybrook, Beechmont and areas west of Denbigh Blvd have become run down and crime/low income neighborhoods. You did show any of this.
