Bay native. Rent is good. Condo is more secure w parking lot. I regret being a home. Buyer. There is some real problems here at night. And I definitely am cautious at night. There are robberies and carjackings rampant and broken glass just because . It happens in even nice neighborhoods . You must be vigilant coming to car and leaving car. I’ve never felt this way since I came here from sf during college. It’s my first time feeling anxious and alert so hard.

Some people are so delusional, they can't understand how Oakland with it's high murder rate can be the top 5 most expensive city to live in in America. I've lived here since 1966, and I will say this. Crime is still a big issue. But the pattern is different. There didn't used to be all this killing over nothing like it is now. During the 70's, 80's, 90's, and early 2000's, the killing was the result of gang activities, and drug organizations. Now the murders are mostly perpetrated by crack babies, with no direction in life, who target the weak, and elderly. Robbing the rich or well off. Now people are killing in Oakland, in 2022 just to make the news.

That’s a pretty fair assessment and I was 14 in 1966 and lived in Brookfield village and seen my first murder victim. On my way home by the railroad tracks two blocks from where I lived,he was naïve enough to go to Food King on East 14th and cash his check

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 They have been trying to gentrify Oakland since the early 80s. Gentrification no longer works. The riffraff has no place to go, so they set up homeless camps in the area and keep on committing crimes. You'd be paying astronomical prices to live in a war zone.

I've lived in Oakland for 10 years and I don't see a big difference between the cost of living in SF, San Jose and oakland. The only way to get it to be significantly lower is to move to outlying areas like Antioch, Vallejo. Sacramento
@MamaMailisha
@MamaMailisha 2 жыл бұрын
It's subtle, but there IS a difference. In fact, Hayward, which I often thought of as the "funny-looking, red-headed step-child" of Oakland (I can say that because I'm also a funny-looking red-headed step-child myself! haha) is now becoming super pricey, due to its proximity to Fremont/San Jose/etc. SF and San Jose are a lot more expensive - as is the through-the tunnel areas, like Lafayette, Walnut Creek, and Danville.

you are correct, I'm from Alameda, born and raised, plus I lived her a long time before leaving for San Jose then onto Hawaii. I was born in 1939 to I have a few years on most people. When I left Oakland it was very nice and the race thing was not a real issue, unemployment was low for all races and I lived in Oakland between E 14th and E 12th on 50 ave. You will encounter homeless under the freeways and it's really crowded. Lot of people out of work and drugs are running wild. She is not telling the truth, race is an issue. Oakland is about 70 % black. I never had any trouble back when I was there , but now days, look out.

@@jameswulzen590 You are a troll. You do not know Oakland. Oakland is 28% White, 27% Hispanic, 22% Black, 17% Asian and the remainder multiracial per the US Census. I live in Oakland and work in Oakland. The "race thing'" as you call it WAS a huge thing in the past. It's still "a thing" but non-whites here don't tolerate it anymore, apparently to your chagrin. Obviously you are from a race that did not bear the brunt of racism (confirmed by your Facebook page). Oakland is rated the most diverse city in America. The Oakland unemployment rate is 3.2% per state of California statistics. Most neighborhoods are multiracial. My block is White/Black/Vietnamese/Hispanic/Gay/Straight. Apparently you are oblivious to the drug use problem in Hawaii. Especially methamphetamine.

Me too! Moving to Oakland in Jan 2022 and very concerned about the crime and homelessness. I’m moving from Austin and we had a similar problem with encampments. The city voted to ban them and everything is so much better now. The city is more beautiful, everyone seems safer and therefore happier. Hopefully Oakland does the same thing and increases the police presence to protect the tax paying citizens.
@thateastbaylife
@thateastbaylife 2 жыл бұрын
@@Brix212 Welcome to Oakland. I think you're going to love it! The City just voted in the last week or two to expand their police hiring efforts so hopefully we'll see a positive change. I do wonder what happened to the people that were living in the Austin encampments. Making them illegal may help with some visible problems, but there can be real consequences for real people if things aren't thoughtfully approached.
@Brix212
@Brix212 2 жыл бұрын
@@thateastbaylife Agreed! I think maybe a middle ground approach between the excessively liberal policies of Oakland/SF and the "sweep under the rug" approach of Austin would be ideal. For example, they could create regulations around public camping without outright banning it - maybe only allow up to 4 tents in a cluster to prevent tent cities or invest more in public housing projects on land that's undeveloped. I'm glad to hear though that the city is prioritizing police hiring. Maybe it's because of the sensationalist news, but it seems like the Bay Area is descending into chaos with smash and grabs, shootings, etc. As an outsider (for now) it seems odd to me that the citizens would tolerate so much crime, especially when you pay SO MUCH in taxes. For how much taxes people pay you would think they'd expect to live in a utopia. But I'm sure the quality of life issues portrayed by the media are blown out of proportion, like most things in the news.
