@@AbsyntheAndTears In some ways, the cards are stacked against us: Phoenix is in a sunny, hot desert, and our population has been growing. In the Valley where we have lots of vehicles on our roadways, and so the transportation sector is one of the leading contributors to air pollution. This is also why our gas is more expensive as it is a higher quality so as to reduce the pollution as much as possible.

For those who don't like longer drives and don't want to spend as much money on gas, there's always the poor man's version of seeing the Grand Canyon - a trip to Sedona. Sure, you're not looking down into a big pit, but you're looking up walls of red rocks sprinkled with greenery - and it's a bit cooler than Phoenix. Regarding the length of the summer, I suppose everyone sets the parameters of "too hot" differently. When I was a young whippersnapper in stone-washed jeans, spiked hair, and a mullet, I tolerated the heat better than I do now. My "too hot" line used to start at 110. Now that I'm old, its at about 96. Eventually, my age and "too hot" line will be the same. It is a dry heat, though, and it REALLY is good when it comes to arthritis. Regarding the accidents, I have theories but I'm not sure whether the statistics support them: So much of the Valley is a grid of streets running straight north/south/east/west, a lot of drivers are driving straight into the sun going to and from work, and we don't have a lot of clouds here to filter the sun. That might also be part of the red-light running problem. Also, when I worked in north Scottsdale, a lot of people in expensive vehicles seemed oblivious to laws and very intent on not letting anyone ever get in front of them. Just a cultural thing, I suppose. So if you have bad reaction times, you might try to limit yourself to golf carts in Sun City. Also, always look both ways when crossing the street.

Speaking about the roads, & traffic infrastructure. We moved to Colorado Springs a little over a year ago, & our vehicle suspension already needs replaced. The lights here are not "timed" or designed for a smooth commute, it's stop & go traffic all over this place. They (the younger folk) are not very friendly to us "older folk" (we're in our 60's). As far as jobs, unless you are 20's - 30's good luck. We are going to do what we can to "lick our wounds" & head back to AZ, it was a hard lesson learned.

Arizona might, arguably, has the best weather between the middle of October till the middle of May (or so) but the following 4 months are so are absolutely brutal. I resided about 2 years in Phoenix 15 years ago and it wasn't this hot. Just relocated from CA to Phoenix again only due to family situation. If it was up to me, I would be somewhere in the PNW but I am not too fond of its economy and politics at the moment so not in a big rush to go there either. I may have to get a cheap motorhome and get out of Dodge during Summers. As much as I am not a fan of Phoenix in general and don't find it that exciting or interesting, I do admit, roads here are nicer and cleaner than the ones in CA. Also, people are generally much nicer than the ones in CA, you notice that a lot right after moving and start going out to the stores. Speed cameras are super annoying as well. Not sure if it is still the same where the PD contracted them out to a private organization that installed, monitored maintained them or not but if you are getting a ticket in the mail that you didn't sign, you just threw it away and avoid getting served within 90 days after the tickets pay due date and it would get dismissed.
@LivinginPhoenixArizona
@LivinginPhoenixArizona Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you need to do a lot more exploring in and around the Phoenix area. The best way to beat the heat is to head up north, you’ll find the same treasures you miss from PNW.

You asked this about Italians too... do you by chance live in a large metropolitan city? Just curious. As for Asian grocery stores, you will find most of them located in Chandler but we will surely start to see more in the Northwest part of the valley now that we have a huge Twainian-based company opening there next year. @@Jay-s8x7f Aha, that makes sense now. NYC is my most favorite place to vacation. Nothing like NYC anywhere in the WORLD. With that said, if you've never lived anywhere else, be ready for a culture shock. El Paso - Nothing to do. super windy, dusty, really close to the Mexico border. SUPER cheap housing, for obvious reasons. Albuquerque - Flat, more desert than Phoenix, boring. If you haven't watch Breaking Bad, they filmed it there and it really does look that way. Phoenix - More expensive than these other cities, lots of new tech jobs, super new city for being the 5th largest. Lots of tourism. Lots of money here too (the new Beverly Hills). Great schools. Hotter than the other cities too. Urban sprawl. Must drive your own car here. Not sure why you've selected these 3 cities as your destinations but definitely do a TON of research before making the move.

Wow, sounds like you’re living in a bad part of Phoenix or Glendale. The greater Phoenix area’s economy is one of the strongest in the US with some of the lowest unemployment in the country. There is an abundance of high paying jobs but yes, for entry level/minimum wage employees it is tough to make ends meet. This is typical for large metro areas, it’s just new to Phoenix as we were a much smaller metro area.
