Easy travel examples: Last month we flew to Portland, Oregon with only a 15- minute drive to the airport and a very short, easy wait to go through the security checkpoint. Our favored airline involves a flight change in one of two hubs even when we flew from a major airport, so there are no disadvantges for us to that the airport geing a small one. Within the last week we rode Amtrak to Washington DC for a multi-day event. Again, only a 15-minute drive to the train station, with a hired vehicle for convenience.

I grew up from 1969-2000 in Roanoke and moved because of the lack of digital job opportunities and the high housing/cost of living. I moved out even though I love all the pros they list here. It’s great for the outdoors, schools were good growing up, friendly, short commutes, etc… but weather is pretty extreme with cold icy winters and humid hot summers. You’re also about 3.5hrs drive from any other major city - Richmond, Chattanooga, or DC. Lastly. Because Roanoke is a geographically isolated valley for the most part with a high tree density… the pollen levels can be off the charts at times. My two cents… Roanoke can be a great place to live if the cons do not outweigh the pros for you.

I’ve lived here since Dec 2019. I live in a very popular upscale neighborhood. If I knew what I learned living here …no way would I move to Roanoke. Yes, it has a nice downtown for small town. But most of the people are clickish. I’ve lived in DC Md Fl and Va I have never felt like an outsider, accept when I moved to Roanoke. This stated my grown kids love it when they visit from Chicago. My other kids live at The Lake and they love that area. Good Luck.
