You guys are so cute! Truly a dream life. Thuong chan is adorable. Seeing you ride across the city gives me a much better feel of what it is like over there rather than watching some drone footage or tourist commercial. It's as if I've been there as well. One thing you gotta give credit for is tha there is no potholes in Da Nang. There's much cleaner countries with much worse roads where anything other than mountain bike feels dangerous. Thank you for the ride Cruise.
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The roads in Da Nang are in pretty good condition. Though the roads quickly go really bad outside of Da Nang. One example is the Hai Van pass. The way up from Da Nang is beautiful pavement, but the way down into Hue is very rough some some potholes. Going by bike though is the best way to explore a new city 😁

I agree with you about the trash problem in Vietnam. Vietnam currently lacks waste management. It costs money to collect, dispose, and manage the trash. Most people either can't afford or don't want to pay for the trash collection. So, they would dump their trash along the roads and in ponds/rivers/lakes. Vietnam is going through this phase just like any other countries. Japan was very polluted during their economic rise, but they cleaned up well. Korea went through the same thing. US went through (and probably is still going through it in many places...seen LA and SF lately?). We hope Vietnam will get to that point also.
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
That's true, Japan used to be very polluted, but they eventually made it a priority to clean things up. It's hard to group the whole of the USA together since each state is very different, but some places seem to be getting really bad lately. 😢

The LA and SF problems are very different. The homeless are generating the trash. They collect things and eventually just leave them all over the place. After years and years of this, you end up with piles of garbage wherever they've been camping.

Vietnam has some serious problems with govt corruption that need to be changed before these reforms can occur. Unlike Korea n Japan, Vietnam is a communist oligarchy and there is no government oversight so those guys have free reign to redirect and extort tax revenue as they see fit with no repercussions.

One amazing thing I'm noticing is how slow everyone drives there. It seems so peaceful on those roads. Maybe because they have a high rate of accidents everyone slows down. English teaching is extremely lucrative over in Vietnam right now. I would definitely snag one of those comfortable jobs. Lots of teachers from Korea are migrating down there these days. Thanks for always being honest with your reviews. You give both sides. These are the most balanced travel/life reviews I've seen.
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
Thanks 👍 Yeah, the overall speed of drivers is much slower here compared to Thailand. People need to be more cautious with the open intersections and people randomly pulling into the road. So in that sense, there are probably less fatal accidents. But I think the motorbike drivers here are more aggressive with weaving through traffic. We frequently get passed by on the inside (right side) if we leave even the tiniest of gaps (which we need to do because of people driving the opposite way)
@natebusch22662 жыл бұрын
I have a car n drive around here. It's more like steering a giant ship in a narrow channel than driving a car because of all the hazards pointed out in the video so yep you need to drive slow.

Hi guys, it’s great to see you, I know the heat has been atrocious, in the mid 90’s, I love riding but not on that kind of weather, I have been enjoying Thoungs videos, she’s a trooper, walking in the heat here and in the torrential rains in Japan, now that I mention the latter, what a contrast in the cleanness, Japan is spotless in comparison but every city has its charms and not so goods, either way thanks for this nice short ride, one last comment, love Thoungs kit, looks great on her and stands out.

I live in Poland and we already got idiot drivers here, add a lot of electric scooters, casual cyclists that don't think about others and we got a pretty dangerous mix. After watching the video I can clearly say that hell no, I will never cycle in Vietnam because it seems like a nightmare. I cycled through Japan in 2019 (waiting to come back asap, but again, not this year due to silly travel policies of japanese government) and I look at every single country from a perspective of cycling there. I always felt safe, I always felt that everything is in control, there were hardly any situations when I got spooked by any other traffic user. I'm gonna try Switzerland this summer because it's the closes in terms of road culture standards and cleanliness to Japan (the trash in the 2nd half of the video killed the views, same as Siciliy in Italy does it every time I go there). I feel happy you guys enjoy your time there and I wish you two all the best cause you two are a nice couple and I watch you here and there since long ago, but I'd never dare to cycle through for ex. entire Vietnam like I did in Japan - driver and pedestrian behaviors are A HAZARD. All best, Tom

Thanks! The electric scooters seem to becoming a big problem in a lot of western countries. We haven't experienced those over here. Cycling over here isn't for everyone, but despite how chaotic it looks things aren't as bad as it looks. Japan is definitely a lot safer for cycling, hopefully they open up back to normal international travel soon. We're also anxious to go back and visit :)

I'll take cycling in Vietnam over cycling in Australia any day of the week. In Vietnam you know to be careful and just be mindful of everyone. That said...I road 100km out of De Nang in a few directions. North, South and inland, and literally never had one issue at all. That's not to say my experience is fact...but I found trucks and cars gave space when riding on highways or narrow roads and there was no malice. Unlike Australia where it feels every driver despises you being on the road and using their 'precious' space. I've never had so many close passes and cut offs here. And this occurs every single ride where without some reactionary move an incident would have occurred. You get beeped to let you know someones coming up behind you, not because they hate you being on the road and just want to scare you as they pass you. But everyone has a different experience and bases their decision and perspective only on that, not what actually occurs.

The loud speaker ruining a nice outdoor spot is a thing in South Korea too. I’ve come to think that us westerners must just be more aggressive and easily annoyed by little things, because it’s not just sounds on repeat outdoors - it can also be jingles in a supermarket on repeat (imagine working there all day), near misses on the road, speaker announcements into my living room at 8:30 at night, non stop “emergency”notifications on phones (“it’s raining, be careful on the roads” - so I turn them off, meaning I’ll not be aware of the one real disaster) and non stop marketing calls and unsolicited direct SMSs. I go near insane while locals don’t seem to be worried in the slightest… which makes me realise that we get ticked off by a lot of things much more easily than most places in Asia. But yeah, turn off the speakers outdoors, please haha
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
We get a crazy amount of marketing calls and texts here. I think a big part of it is we have had more time (in the US/EU anyway) to develop laws to protect against these kinds of things so we are more used to an environment without them. So we are more sensitive that these things are allowed to happen here, but for local people it is just normal. Maybe in time things will change here, but on another hand the "lawlessness" of things here can be one of the appeals.

I feel like riding in Vietnam is actually a lot safer than the USA, and much more fun, at least where I lived in St. Louis, MO. Lot of upsides here in VN. The only unbearable downside is I've lived here for 7 years and never needed to hear a horn not once, ya know.....because I have eyes. Noise cancelling headphones to dampen the sound, along with chill tunes to not care about them, go a long way. That, or listen Slayer to not hear anything else....and ride a lot faster! Never being able to count on 5 minutes of peace and quiet outside gets real old real fast, especially since the reason for the noise (unloved dog as constant alarm, seller's speaker, horn instead of using brake, single person singing bad karaoke) is never a good one, so I think it is very helpful find a way to mitigate it.

not my place to be for sure. I hate traffic in LA, but compare to your video, we have nothing here :) It is so interesting to see different infrastructure. That curb along the road is designed so bad. If a vehicle or scooter lose control, that curb helps to get on the side walk so easy. I understand wheelchairs have access everywhere, but in this case we are going back to your problem with J walking. it is not a good idea for a handicap person to cross the road anywhere she/he wants...
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
A lot of curbs are designed like that for easy access for the motorbikes. It is really scary since many people will just pull out into the street with their bikes without even looking for oncoming traffic (sometimes even pulling in then going the opposite direction)

Have you guys seem Vietnam Meet Dustin's videos? He's one crazy, entertaining guy who lives out in the countryside of Vietnam. He used to be a competitive biker and was with Team USA. I believed he biked through SE Asia and such, but chose to live in Vietnam and has been there for like 8+ years. He doesn't bike in Vietnam as far as I know since he rides around in his Honda Cub.

So, if you were to rank Chiang Mai/Bangkok vs. Da Nang for cycling, who wins?
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
Chiang Mai #1 for sure, lots of smooth roads to ride, safest and huge community. Da Nang has better views though, especially the seaside mountains. Hard to compare Bangkok since it is a major city.

Plenty of cheap bikes to rent. Haven't looked for higher end stuff, but doubt there's anything in larger sizes.

I think Da Nang has a lot going for it in terms of the natural features of the area. So it’s definitely beautiful if you just think about that. And I think all the issues (trash, air quality, noise pollution etc) will be quickly gone if we ever start taking the climate crisis legitimately seriously. And perhaps that day is coming soon if we look at what’s going on in Japan right now. The rainy season ended early and it went straight into a long record heatwave for June. Hundreds of monthly heat records were set around the country and some all-time records too. I’m sure the Japanese are dreading the actual summer now. It’s pretty scary to consider the possibilities. But also exciting in a way if it does act as a springboard to real climate action rather than just lying politicians saying things.

Yes, most of these problems are easily fixable once they become a priority. Also with the growing middle class here, I'm sure more people will want to prioritize cleaning up things.

@@TwoWheelCruise thanks for the reply. Vietnam is certainly beautiful, what with the mountains right there rolling into the ocean. And family nearby is important. I hear you about rising early. I have struggled with that all my life. Until I met my wife, that is. She is an early to bed person, so I have converted to her schedule. We get up at first light, or sometimes a bit later (or earlier during the winter). Which is great to do here in Tucson during the hot months because we can get out very early for a walk, run, or bike ride. And for me morning has always been the best time of day, so full of hope and promise. Good luck with it!

What is the native language that your wife was speaking? Besides the good Vietnamese food, I would think that the warm climate is better than the cold/snowy ones. You can go outside feasibly without worrying about getting cold. Besides the food, the abundant tropical fruits are awesome. Colder climate fruits are crap compared to tropical ones.

Good on you both for your videos, it's very interesting to see places that I've never been to before. Vietnam is so beautiful but I feel sad to see so much litter and garbage even at beauty spots. Australia is a developed country but we have our fair share of road side litter, unfortunately , but doing away with plastic shopping bags and refunding 10 cents per drink container has seen a dramatic improvement. I was horrified to see people quarter way across a pedestrian marked zebra crossing and not being given the right of way ! I think I would be killed in Vietnam 😀. All the best.
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It is very unfortunate to see. It would be great if they restricted plastic shopping bags and started a can/bottle deposit return program. The zebra crossings are meaningless on this first stretch of road since beach-goers are randomly walking into the road everywhere.

NYC and Paris are the most famous international cities in the world, BUT there are sections of the cities also very dirty with garbage strewn all over. Furthermore, some parts of these 2 cities are dangerous at night in terms of personal safety. Some streets of Paris are full of dog poops and urine smell. The government of Danang has to take some drastic measures to control the problems you mentioned in the clip. People in Danang must be aware of these issues: first, it's a touristic city, and a lot of people make a living depending on tourists. Second, the Vietnamese in general must learn how to be conscious of littering for the sake of the environment and their livelihood. Vietnamese people, tourism is essential for our country. PLEASE KEEP OUR COUNTRY CLEAN! CLEAN! CLEAN!
@TwoWheelCruise2 жыл бұрын
Yes, NYC is very dirty (and dangerous) so I don't really want to go back there or bring Thuong there. Because Da Nang is a tourist dependent town, I think it is important that they work to create a more clean image so more people want to come back.
