Diving on twin tanks has it's benefits which is why many advanced divers use them but there are some downsides to twins too. I've been diving twins for years now and have seen all aspects of twins so let's dive in and take a closer look at diving twin tanks.

The most important thing about scuba diving is that you do it safely. And that is what Safe Diving is all about.
On this channel, I will discuss all aspects of going underwater from equipment advice and techniques to the little things like what to pack in your bags for a dive trip.
My entire professional career has been spent in and around the scuba diving industry and travelling to diving destinations both warm and cold.

The two things in scuba diving that I‘d only do if there’s a really good reason: Lifting a twin set and buddying up with someone called „Dangerous Dave“. 😳

I dive twins for the reserve gas and redundancy. Better to carry gas you don't need than to need gas you don't carry.

Would like to add that when diving twinset and doing two dives in "singles mode", you are essentially taking with you the reserve that you had left from the first dive. Single cylinder divers leave it on the boat... More gas is always better!

Ummm no lol, when I dive twinsets I always bring 2 full tanks each time (unless it was an insanely long walk to a shore dive etc). If it’s a boat dive, doing 2 dives, i always bring 4 tanks and use 2 fresh/new tanks for each dive. You never know when you’ll need the air

Are you special? Depends on the diving you are doing... if you are doing a 4 dive charter w/2 sets of doubles...

Twins are heavy, so the best bit of dive kit you can invest in is a sack truck. Foldable ones are cheap and easily available and will make moving your twins around the divesite very easy. On buoyancy, remember that although you are carrying twice the cylinder weight it's the nett buoyancy that's important, and more than that the change in buoyancy through the dive. From say 220Bar to 50Bar can be a 5kg change so remember to be weighted correctly for the gas remaining when you finish. This means you'll be heavy to start with but, on the plus side, if you're diving drysuit you won't have to get all the air out of the suit to descend and you'll be toasty warm from the start. Same applies to side-mount of course.

I haven't taken the step to twins, but everyone else in the dive club pretty much has. I tried twins once and simply turning my head to the side caused me to roll over - the buoyancy change from weight around my waist to weight behind my back was dramatic! I use very little air, but would like to eventually move to twins, although additional drag (not mentioned), excessive weight on land/boat. and weird buoyancy keep me hesitating.

Twin 12s are bloody heavy - I just got mine back from servicing and after carrying them, I picked up my 15L cylinder and almost threw it up in the air! Great for deep dives, but I think the 'benefit' of not 'faffing' between dives is vastly outweighed by the con of all that weight. Underwater, of course, you barely notice them!

Local dive shop goes to North Carolina and require twins. Traded my wing BCD for a backplate and harness for just that purpose.

Along with the twins being more stable ( Bolted to your back plate ). They are easier for me to stay neutral buoyant and less affected by breathing at spearfishing depth. I enjoy longer time in the water to find the fish to harvest.

Major pro for sidemount is greater stability in the water due to lower cofg, the only con I can think of is having to switch regs periodically to stay balanced. Of course when you go to multiple stages it's often best to start with a twins rig so it's still a good skill to have, and Mark's right that it does look cool :-)

worth mentioning is a twin with smaller tanks: i'm usually diving with 2x5.7L. advantages: not so heavy, redunduncy and 2 gases possible. for deeper dives i use 3x5.7L

But no more gas than a 15L for a lot more weight (unless you got 300Bar cylinders and then it's EVEN more weight!)

Awesome! Please make a video on your take of the different deco systems. Bubble vs Buehlmann, do you practice Ratiodeco? How to correctly evolve your gradient factors.

@@SafeDiving It doesn't need (and probably should not be) too educational I imagine. Your personal take would already be interesting for a lot of people. You use a Perdix so I guess Bühlmann ZHL-16C, your personal tweaks would probably deserve a Video for it self. Also an interesting topic is Bühlmann vs Bubble. Deciding factor for me to go with Shearwater was the customization on the gradient factors for once I developed to deco dives. Ratiodeco is a philosophy for it self, also would interest me what you think about it. Cheers!

As a new (UK waters) diver gradually buying my kit, what order would you buy your kit if you had to do it one item at a time? (Or a few items at a time if their total cost was only about £200)?
@SafeDiving
@SafeDiving 4 жыл бұрын
1. Mask 2. Fins 3. Dive Computer 4. Drysuit 5. Regs 6. BCD And collect other bits like dSMB and spool as you go. Don't try to get too much stuff too fast or you'll just end up buying another mask down the line to replace the cheap one you bought at the beginning. Spend some time taking to your Dive centre about gear or ask for people's opinions online. We're all pretty honest about gear

Two things I noticed when moving to twin 7Lt twins on wings. Firstly they arent big enough to do two long dives. This becomes a problem on double boat dives, or when I'm a long way from the dive shop. In which case Ill use BCD and take along a spare tank. Secondly, getting out of twins in a hurry (eg trying to climb aboard a boat in rough seas) is not pleasant. BCDs have quick releases, wings don't. Add in a crotch strap, thick suit, hood with skirt, gloves, torch, wrist slate, necklace, wrist computer and a 2m hose... and getting out isnt as simple as popping a shoulder buckle and rotating so the boat sitter can pull your gear out first. In a cave things are more serene and twins are great, but in rough water give me a BCD any day.

Rather taking more air than more lead: This argument doesn't really stand. Using up your 24 litres of compressed air in your twinset means that you become much lighter and have much more lift, so you need to take more lead from the beginning anyway. For really long or deep dives, twinset make sense. You wouldn't drive around in a lorry everyday only because you need all that space once or twice in your life, wouldn't you?
@andreykarayvansky9549

Right, this was my question as well. My tanks are almost neutrally buoyant when empty. So how can you take less lead with you? Even more, because you have more gas, you either need to be always significantly overweighted when you have full tanks, or adjust weights between the dives. Which is also an extra effort comparable to changing tanks.
