If you're nervous about it or feel uncomfortable I wouldn't even bother. So many other ways to hit the same thing. You do need to be particularly careful and maintain a good shoulder tuck. Everyone is different of course, however I've been using this grip since day one. Fucked up my shoulders doing squats. Give it a go and see how you feel with it.

you could also just do both, stick to a closer grip while training and wider when hitting a orm just remember to not program your normal bench sessions accourding to your wide orm

I feel like you gotta treat it like behind the neck press. In terms of hypertrophy, if you can do it safely then you should. Chances are, if you have the shoulder mobility for the latter, you could benefit from the former.

@@leonflowers2073benching in a rack...set the pins so the bar is at the bottom phase of the movement. Pushing it from a complete deadstop allows you to engage other or all muscles used at this point of the lift. Strengthening both those muscles and the lift itself

You might have stronger triceps than chest but that’s a good thing. Also there’s things such as how your joints feel when you wide grip bench or close grip bench, close grip bench might just feel better in general for a lot of people.

Well Arnold's era and before would go much wider then your wide grip. The wider you go, the more chest involved. The closer, the more tricep. And also, most people that don't experiment with different lengths find that their chest muscles are fairly weak when benching wide versus going close and being tricep dominant. That's where you see people with a wide bust and very exposed and prominent chest versus people with those thick chest and sort of narrow bust. I prefer to go very wide. It does tax on the rotator cuff, but it helps when you're actually ready for the weight that you're benching. You can go higher each week when you bench pretty close. Can't really do the same wide. Your chest muscles and shoulder have to be ready for that weight if you understand what I'm saying

Yes that's why I am going for wide grip is to get wider chest not small pecs like boobs :) if my arms get big could I lift heavier with wide grip ?

@@borarider669 yes, essentially your lift will go up. Because triceps, lats, shoulders, and upper back are all responsible for a strong bench press. And of course the chest. But the wider the grip, the more pectoral dominate your lift will be. When powerlifting, they call it accessory workout. So when they want a bigger bench, they do tricep push downs, tricep extensions, pull ups, seated rows. Those assist your bench lift. So yes bigger arms will help your lift, and specifically bigger triceps bro.

I bench with my index fingers on the rings , an easy 405x1 I’m blessed to be 21 with extremely strong shoulders lol ( my max shoulder press is 265x1 and it flew up easy

I always used a wide grip index finger on the rings. But i broke my arm doing it this way after years of benches. But at the same time i never took any time off. I've tried to go to a different style grip pinky on the rings but i only get si far with the poundage then i lose my bench again time after time. 20 years of failure. I'm going back to my original grip. The grip style also mentally affects to way you focus into the bench. The narrow grip causes to much soreness into the arms also.
