Pros and Cons Self-Publishing

I would like to consider traditional publishing, but self publishing is better why? Because with traditional publishing your book has to sell let's see The New York times : 76,748 copies, USA today:76,748 copies, The Las Angeles times:52,201. Now if my book doesn't sell that many numbers like I put down traditional publishers will stop working with me because they have to make money from my book. Also a lot has changed since Stephen King and all these other big writers were writing back then, Stephen King had lots of rejections, so have J.K. Rowling. Now in this era people aren't really reading the way they used too, but the people in Vermont read a lot, the states were it snows has more readers. California has the less readers. Now with that said let me jump back to publishing deciding. I honestly love my story; it's a great story, but I don't see me selling 76,748 copies. I see me selling maybe only 1,000 books, my intuition is strong, but even a 1,000 copies aren't bad because most people don't even sell one. But I might be my own publisher because I don't see myself selling that many copies. I don't. I'm not trying to not believe in myself I'm just speaking the truth on what I see when I close my eyes. I'm not a psychic, but I have a very strong intuition.

It's all about picking what you feel is right for you. Remember, having a platform will reach even more readers, whether you go traditional or not. There are lots of tools out there these days to get your book into the hands of readers!

Great info! You got me thinking. What if created articles on Medium, and others, and built up an audience in my genre and voice? Then, over time, segue into self-publishing with a built in base. Your thoughts please...

Writing articles is a great start to a book! It's best to use Medium or other platforms to get people on your own email list so that you can communicate directly with your audience.

I’m wondering if I should spend money on editing for my first self published book? It’s a smaller book-each chapter is a page or two in a “pep talk” voice and it is kind of my “book before the book.” I am of course rigorously going through it with drafts and editing and will ask some colleagues to read it and give feedback…I am just wondering if I should save money for editing for the next book which is bigger and much more involved-this first book will eventually become a companion piece for the major book….

Great question, Cynthia! You really want to put your best foot forward, no matter what. Just because this is the "book before the book" doesn't mean less attention should be paid. We have editing services, but if it's out of your price range, you can look at gig sites like Fiverr or Upwork and hire a freelancer. Especially if you're planning for this to be supplemental material for a future book, putting as much care into this first book as your impending second book is advised. Hope this helps!
