Another very well thought out and interesting video from the Gentlemen's Gazette. I have just recently bought a vintage double breasted 2-piece suit in wool (fine Prince of Wales check in blue). I was made just outside Savile Row in the early nineties and I suspect is bespoke. I bought in for £7 (yes, seven) and paid about £90.00 to get the tailoring done. I'm really pleased with the results! Yes it cost me a lot to tailor, but I've finally got a suit that fits me :-)

On the subject of inheritance, my father gave me his old Jaeger grey wool herringbone double breasted jacket, and a vintage tailcoat from around the 1920-1930s, I have the exact same figure as my father had at my age so they both fit me well and look great. I also was given a wool pullover that was knitted by my grandmother in the 80's from some very nice quality wool, it's really nice to wear a garment that's older than me but is in such great condition.

Been at vintage for a few months, but these are things I've learned thus far: Bring a pal-- Someone you trust to give the straight dope whether it fits or not. Case the joint-- Not to rob of course ;) (gentlemen after all) but come in a local thrift multiple times to see the kinds of things on offer. Some stores mainly take womens dresses for example, or only have neighborhood donors whose tastes and cultural demographics may not match you. Let Them Breathe-- Once you've found a running list of thrifts, visit periodically, but not TOO too often. It can take them a good while to clear out the lime green zoot suits and baby blue Prom tuxes, so be patient. Vintage hunting is fun though!

As a theatre kid I learned that some of the largest collections of vintage clothing belong to local community theatre companies. My senior year, my school performed 'South Pacific' and I had the privilege of wearing a pair of authentic, handmade wool trousers from the 1940s that was provided by a local costume company. The company was headquartered in a warehouse that was over full with local clothing going back as far as the 1910s.

I greatly appreciate the fact that you mention the advantage of green shopping. Not having to buy new garments and increase your ecological footprint, but instead reuing an already fabricated piece of clothing again, is an excellent way of going green. The fast fashion clothing industry nowadays has a huge negative impact on the wellbeing of our planet, so opting for vintage is actually a great way to downsize your own share of pollution.

I'd be really interested to see a video where you actually take us shopping with you. Particularly in secondhand shops, and show how we can spot vintage goods. Really take us through the process of assembling a wardrobe in a vlog-type style perhaps. I'm a woman, and I dress mostly in vintage clothing. I remember first starting off wearing vintage and being confused about how to identify when things were made, how to look for quality peices, and what brands to look out for. I've figured it out a bit, but now I'm gaining an interest in men's fashion as I've recently been doing a lot of shopping for my boyfriend. I'd be interested to see what kinds of things I may have passed by while sticking to the woman's section.

When buying vintage, it's really important to be sceptical because it is alleged that some vendors move labels; from a designer rag to a high-street garment in good enough condition.

During my time at University, I found a couple of stores that had great selections of vintage men's clothing, namely a Catholic charity shop and the Salvation Army. For some reason, the GoodWill workers in my region are unable to designate between men's suits and a lady's pantsuit.
@lorisewsstuff16073 жыл бұрын
I frequently buy vintage mens suits. It's a great way to get the more pricey high-end fabrics like good quality tweeds. My advice is take a hard look at the garment before buying. Damage can be hard to spot at first glance. Tweeds were created as a kind of camouflage for hunters. That camouflage makes holes hard to spot. The issue with thrift stores is that they often aren't very concerned about moths. If a suit hangs on the rack for a few months it could get chewed up while in the store. Worse yet it could be infested and you don't want that happening to the rest of your closet.
@muhdzafri75515 жыл бұрын
I found a vintage pocket watch that was still in very good condition.I got lucky with that one.Really high quality and very cheap.
@adrielrowley5 жыл бұрын
Moths! I have had great success on eBay, then for some reason the last three had moth damage which was not shown in the picture or the description. One being a tweed and one hole small, not noticeable, the other on the lower edge of the suit coat. At least two out of three got most of the money back. The tweed suit ended up costing me a total of $9, so think did well (coincidentally my other tweed suit paid $10 for). What I used to judge an eBay sport or suit coat is the lapels and then the look of the labels. If the lapels have a nice full roll, then better chance being at least a half canvass. Once seen a lot of labels usually can tell if modern or vintage. Also, don't be afraid to learn how to adjust pants waist and length. Silk thread and needles not all that expensive, can get away with the color being close. Just take your time and make neat even stitches. Waistbands doing by hand for me take about 20 to 30 minutes (now have a machine so takes about 15 with most of that taking apart plus pressing). Oh and have gone to a store without a changing room or even bathroom. Tried on over, then those that seemed potentials, found a hidden corner and did quick changes. So get not ideal at all, especially with no returns. Hope this helps and have fun hunting.

If you plan on buying vintage here are some additional things to know; 1. Do your research - (price, material, etc.) being able to find an item and know whether it is a deal or not is impeccable. 2. Learn to sew basics - knowing how to sew on a button, repair a small tear, and/or hem your pants 3. Be patient - you will most likely not find the item you want on your first trip out

2:15 Yes, flea markets. I regulary find clothing from high quality manufacturers for 3-5€ a piece - that's for shirts and trousers that costs 70-100€ originally. One flea market tip: when someone has a piece of clothing you like and fits you, dig a little around at their stall - there's often more that you'll like - Sometimes, I come home with bundles over bundles of clothing because of that, other times I don't find anything interesting for half the season. Another flea market tip: Know what you're looking for when it comes to quality, don't be afraid to turn around and quickly google the brand/name of a piece (doesn't just apply to clothing). Flea markets are actually the only low budget alternative that I have, as I'm the big-and-high type that not many low-budget clothing stores cater to. And the quality is so much higher that way. For example, I found a nice Bugatti coat for 20€ recently. Or a gorgious pair of soft-brown leather shoes that must've been custom-done at some point and weren't worn at all for 35€ - must've been in the 200-300€ range originally.

Interesting, thank you! I still have a very nice and heavy Crombie winter coat which I bought from a charity shop when a student for just £2. It’s still being used regularly 30 years later and is in fine condition. When you said the vintage suit you were wearing was 1980s, I realised I had an inaccurate definition of vintage in my mind; I was thinking it meant much older. Perhaps on a future video you could explain the definition. I just had a quick look online and found this helpful: “Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 20 years before the present day is considered vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, or "vintage style," usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Reproduction, or repro, clothing is a newly made copy of an older garment. Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion. Opinions vary for these definitions.” This is from Wikipedia, but I’d be interested to know your view. Thanks!

I only recently got BACK, ..into Vintage Fashions. I did it on my own in high school, & had mixed reviews. I had a 1/2 dozen very early 70's Dress/Casual Shirts, Belts, Jeans, Wristwatches & Cologne. Eventually all the Jeans wore out, the Wristwatches are gone, but still have a couple of those remaining Shirts today which really stand out now as OLD. I helped a friend my Dads age move, & he started laughing & said "Hey I have something for you..I think its just your size..it hasn't fit me for years"; His old Suit from the early 70's, & he was 100% correct it fits no tailoring needed. Dark Tan Cord. The Cords go horizontally not vertically, & Canadian made. I matched it to one of my 70's Dress Shirts/Ties, & a pair of Vintage Edmonds. Only my Boxers/Socks & Pocket Corner were new. My Grandfather passed away some yrs ago, & I figured I would inherit at least one of his (many) old Suits (he worked in Business, & would have had Suits going back to WWII at some point). No..but did get his Dress Overcoat & Trappers Cap & Mitts. Went in all that to a Christmas Party & they were convinced I had on everything brand new minus the Overcoat. "Best Dressed" in their opinions. (I told them it was Vintage). tbh I worry abt wearing such stuff & someone splashing Wine/Tea etc. on them. I also still after went & bought a brand new Canadian made Suit so I can do the modern look. I like both Modern & Vintage..& prefer to chance things in modern Clothes. Great Channel, I like the Ideas & seeing how you put this stuff together.

I LOVE thrift store hunting. Probably a lot of you already know that you can check the waist fit of pants by buttoning/zipping it up, make a fist with your hand and fit it in the waist band. If your arm and fist fit in there then that SHOULD match your waist size. Works for me the majority of the time. Not always. Saves time though, that's for sure. I just bought a beautiful dark Navy blue Donna Karan Signature 3 button (first 3 button I've ever owned) suit on half off day for $7.00. Just had to have the coat tailored and now I have a sweet suit for under forty bucks. Just be patient and keep going back a few times a week. Best of luck. Next on the list is a beautiful double breasted Armani suit like they used in The Untouchables movie. A few grand back when that movie came out and now on ebay for around $150.00. Let me know guys if you see anything like that and best of luck in what your looking for.

If I use size 48 in suits (European size) and I find a blazer size 48, but made for a guy with a lot more stomach then me, and fatter arms, will my tailor be able to make it look good on me? In my country no one dresses up elegant this days ,even at partys being ,,elegant,, is reduced to just wearing a shirt not even shuffled in the pants ,I usualy go in second hands and I find many beautiful pieces of clothing ,for example my mother bought a nice paletot for just 2 leis ,that would be like 0.50 E

In fact I had been wondering what the big "G" lapel emblem stood for - silly me thought it might be the Gentleman's Gazette logo...

If there's enough demand from our viewers, perhaps a "logo pin" could find its way to the Fort Belvedere shop someday. :) - Preston

As much as I love vintage items and suits I'm so broad shouldered and large in generally that I can't find vintage garments that actually fit. For this reason I get most of my suits custom done to a vintage astestic(as much as I can anyway).

Guys, I have a question and will be very greatful if it is answered. I just found a vintage tuxedo jacket which is too beautiful too pass however it lack the pants. Well, my mother is a tailor so should I ask her to make a pair of trousers that try to be as close to the jacket as possible or should i tell her to make the trouser from different color and use that combination more as a creative dress up for dinner night?

I live Preston, but as a guy who has the same problem, your cuffs are too wide, and your wrists are swimming in your shirt as a result
@countalma98005 жыл бұрын
Yes, he shouldn't be wearing off-the-rack shirts with french cuffs, as they are, clearly, too big for his wrists. Custom-made shirts are now easily available to be ordered online for a reasonable price. Preston's clothes, in general, never fit well. And pink socks with a pink shirt with a pink pocket square... Where is Sven looking?!

Love the vintage overcoat @2:10 Does that style have a particular name, or is it just an average "overcoat" of the era?
@iansoutryer31895 жыл бұрын
I believe it's a "double-breasted paletot". If you google a few pictures... I think it's correct.

sorry bro, but @0:46 that was no zoolander turn. Nowadays the garment assemblers don't tie off thread after sewing, they just cut it off and it unravels and falls apart quickly
