My family live in Prescott from August 1972-1975. Low wages forced them to move. They loved it there but the wages were not good even then.

Everybody wants to live in Tahiti and be five minutes from downtown Manhattan. There ain't no such place (and I know...I've looked). But after 42 years in Prescott, I've never regretted the move.

Keeping an eye on moving to Prescott for years from the Phoenix valley, I totally agree with the cons. Unless you can work remote for a bigger company for higher pay, be a business owner or afford retiring there, the local pay won't be even close to affording a house there.

We fell in love with Prescott and relocated here from New Mexico, but even 7 years ago we couldn't afford a house in Prescott, so we bought in nearby Chino Valley, and our modest manufactured home has doubled in value, which is nuts! We love The Palace and Park Plaza, the Arts & Crafts Shows, and Watson Lake. Because this is such a retirement destination, most of the jobs are service jobs - retail and restaurant jobs and there is no affordable housing for people earning less than six figures. I actually have to drive to Phoenix once a week for my government job (I telework the rest of the time), which sucks, but I only have 3 more years to go before I retire. Now that we have been here awhile, we complain about the traffic when we come into town, just like the locals! There is definitely a lot of California-hating, so if you move here from there, don't tell anyone.

Funny l heard most of Arizona is full of people from all parts of the US not everyone there is a native. So tired of hearing people hate on Californians heck if we agreed with BS there we wouldnt be re-locating elsewhere period! California is a beautiful state too bad its bring run from the wrong people. Also Arizona isnt perfect nor does it sound like some of the people are either. Thats the problem with the world today everyone likes judge others ONE DAY WE WILL ALL BE JUDGED BY GOD for not loving one another as he commanded us too.🤙

@Sue Arellano I don't think it needs any explanation on why people are hating on California. People are leaving in record numbers. The problem Arizona, Texas, etc. has; is that if you do not like California's politics, crime, and culture, and you decide to leave. You all idiots start voting on the same policies and polititions that you left California for. Look at Austin Texas as an example. Nobody I know or have talked to about this subject ever wants to see a license plate from California. Stay in California, thanks.

I’ve lived here 31 years. If you’re retiring and have endless $$$ then you’re fine. If you’re actually working and having to support a family here,😂 get ready to work 2-3 jobs, because that’s what it takes. Stay in Prescott too, you enter PV, they have a military regiment, not officers. Once a great place. Cons are too great now. Peoples attitudes are terrible here, but… 2-3 jobs you see why. For all you retired folk ENJOY! But please… get out of the left lane 😂

We've been coming to visit family in Phoenix for 20 years. And, beginning last year, we are now "Snowbirds". But have NEVER been in Prescott. So I'm just getting info to spend a day. I've seen this, and your best things to do in Prescott videos. I'm very impressed. Your suggestions fit people of all interests, and seem very honest. Thanks! Agree with most of what you said. I spent my summers as a kid living with my grandparents on a ranch outside of Prescott. My great grandparents were original pioneers in Prescott. They moved there in the 1860 s. It was the Dearing ranch out past Thumb butte. I love Prescott. Visit at least once a year. My ancestors definitely have history in Prescott. I have friends from California ,who now live in Prescott.

I have enjoyed my Prescott visits in the past and even looked at real estate there around 2011 but decided not to move there. I felt that it was too isolated for me in various ways. I did not like the idea of having to drive to Phoenix to catch a flight and if i wanted to go anywhere outside of the city, there would be too much driving to get there. I am also an asthmatic which is a HUGE negative with all the wildfires, high winds, and the pollens that spread from those trees and shrubs.

We like the isolation. Lived in Phx for 15 years and they can have it. Sure it would be nice to have more flights outta Prescott but aside from that, if we have to go to Phx more than once a month, that’s too often. Thanks for watching!

I have relatives and friends in Gilbert and Mesa who love it there for their jobs, family members, recreation and other reasons. But they also have the INTENSE summer heat to deal with each year and last year, that area set some heat records with all those days over 110 degrees!!! No thanks!! 😵

I would add that Prescott has a great art community, with many local artists, annual artist studio tours, lots of galleries, and Mountain Artist Guild.

Great video. I live in Prescott Valley and often visit the Prescott lakes and other parks to do landscape photography. While I love living in the area and feel the pros outweigh the cons, I do agree with all the cons you mentioned. Especially the traffic.

My daughter is moving to Prescott Valley today! I am sad about it, but it's what they want to do. They bought land there as well and will be building a house at some point. They want us to move there too, but after looking around there last Dec., we discovered that we cannot afford a house there. So we will just enjoy visiting there for now.

@@livinginprescott They are on their way! Should be there by midnight. They are renting a house in Prescott Valley for now as my son in law will still be commuting back to CA for 3 years yet. They bought 2 acres in Prescott Valley and plan to build a house once he retires as he plans to get another job then in AZ. I don't remember exactly where the property is though. It is in some sort of new development. You could get a prairie lot or a mountain lot. They chose a prairie lot. It was very windy when we were there in Dec.

@@darleneneville8884 It is too bad. We were there again last Oct. and houses still way too expensive. We are going again in May but don't have any hopes of finding anything affordable. We will just stay put in CA for now I suppose. We are missing our grandkids growing up, but we can't afford half a million dollars for a fixer upper. Not every house in CA sells for a million dollars, so we will be on a tight budget. We even thought about Pine Lakes but the lot rent is over $1000 per month and that does not include any utilities. I live beside a senior mobile home park and they own the land and pay $250. That includes their water and trash, a laundry room and they maintain all the roads and plow in the winter. So $1000 is absurd. It's a beautiful area, but I am beginning to think we will not be able to afford to move there ever. And my daughter and son in law can not afford to build their house now. The builder gave them a price of $400 per sq foot. Insane!!!!

California transplants are moving in by droves and driving up housing prices so locals like my family who settled the area can afford to buy a decent home. Developments are taking over and ruining the landscape. Ranch lands are being sold off. It's no longer the charming cowboy town it was due to the hordes of people coming. They all want their specialty stores built so they can feel like they're in California. It's sad. My grandparents would be sad to see these changes if they were still around. Traffic is horrible compared to what it was. Instead of ranch people you see the rainbow colored hair types. Prescott is going downhill. It used be the neatest little Western town.

Ex Californian here. My wife and I searched all over America on where to move too from the craziness of California. We bought a great house in the pines and love our neighbors and our new community. We're as loving and friendly as it gets. We're conservative and God fearing and felt at home here. Yes we brought our money from California, but we made it by working our asses off for years. We love it here and aren't going anywhere else. We bought an existing home here and hired local contractors for the remodel. We love it here, and yes many California transplants are rude and pushy but we feel we fit here.

The biggest con is that the overpopulation prescott is supposed to be a small historic town in Arizona people. "VISIT" instead people moved here and these California and Phoenix real estate people who are so used to renting property out at a high rate decided to buy apartments and such in prescott and boost the rent amd bam now our real estate goes up houses cost more rent cost more cost of living cost more I'm sure the people in the government benefiting financially on this is very happy with this boost and the biggest fact in history is before the 19 hotshot died we were trying to get in the map as the best retirement town or whatnot and all the sudden this unfortunate sad event happened with these 19 hotshot happened and now all the sudden we are in the map. You could visibly see the damage of the overpopulation done to our city not only does our natural forest look go away with every apartment built but we are getting less and less snow and rain we truly are turning into a little phoenix

We just got back from visiting Prescott again. We were there for a week and a half this time and really got to have a good look around. We would love to move there if the housing market drops down in the next few years. I have a question though. We currently live in a very small, 3000 population, mountain town. On the weekends or during events, the population swells to 10 or 12 thousand or more. It is horrific. People park where they shouldn't, walk in the middle of the streets and make it impossible to get into a restaurant or even order a pizza. Locals cannot enjoy local events due to the massive influx of tourists. We have to stay out of town during the weekends. And when it snows, it really gets bad. They also leave a ton of trash behind and our local merchants have to deal with cleaning it up. We are in an unincorporated part of our county and have no city government to handle these things. Since Prescott is obviously much larger than my little village, and I assume you do have a city government, do you find that things are like this in Prescott or are you better equipped to handle the influx of tourists? Can a local go out on a Saturday evening and enjoy a meal? Can you easily participate in local events? Even our little Halloween parade and festival for the kids has been taken over by the tourists. We have no trick or treat here, mountain terrain, lots of part time homes, no street lights etc., and so the merchants have a parade in town and pass out candy. However, many of them have quit doing it because so many tourists come up and they just can't afford to give candy to hundreds and hundreds of kids. Just curious how a local in Prescott feels about tourists and what their impact is on the town.

Fri Sat are always super busy, but by Sunday night it def gets back to a sleepier town. Thursdays you see things picking up for the weekend. The city handles tourists well, they won’t take any abuse, the young strong police will be at whiskey row in under 2 minutes if there any problems.

The Downtown area and major roads in and out of downtown become jammed with tourists and those with 2nd or 3rd homes in Prescott starting around 3pm on most Thursdays. Let's not sugarcoat it, Prescott is a tourist town populated by retirees. The largest employers are the hospital and the school district. The hospitality industry pays peanuts so local governments (run by home developers) are addicted to tax revenue and the easiest way to get that revenue is to position the town as a tourist destination. Whiskey Row is a joke...cheap tourist shops...tourist-only saloons for people who want to live out their wild west fever dreams and, of course, there are local bars that smell of stale beer populated with local day drinkers.

@@iainblack2975 "young strong police" ...now there's an interesting descriptor. The police station is 2 blocks off of Whiskey Row and after 150 years of arresting people on Whiskey Row of course the police are wise enough to pre-position officers near the area so they quickly respond.

Things wouldn't be so bad in Prescott if it weren't for the Chamber of Commerce DRAWING people here ALL THE TIME with their "special" events, festivals, craft shows, annual Corvette show, etc. They block off the streets around the courthouse regularly and it becomes a zoo downtown with vendor tents all around the courthouse and people EVERYWHERE. Check out the events calendar on line. If you can manage to dine and do your activities outside of the downtown area you might be OK.

Thank you, our Prescott place is right past Woody’s ( now called Gilligan’s) right by the Prescott Pines B&B, but to be honest they are about to start building a 18 home condo thing right at my turn off at Forest Hylands we’re the Alibertos used to be across from the Safeway. Live in Phx and bought a condo in 2016 in Prescott off of White Spar Road. Up here most weekends and all holidays, I’m a million times happier up here than down in the hell hole phoenix. I will say that the growth, particularly in Prescott Valley especially now, is obscene and obnoxious. They won’t be happy until all those beautiful rolling hills are developed. Very lucky living so close to Prescott National Forest, the greedy monster developers can’t do to much up here.🎃

Most "Working people" live in Prescott Valley. Now My cousins "came into" some money from a death and my Aunt and two cousins moved to Prescott in that big house that was built off on Hereford and Iron Springs road in 2015 maybe. Its basically two identical houses built as one, both my cousins live there and my Aunt lives in the other house the original house thats 2 bed 2 bath, I'd rather live there but my cousins both work and are soaring, Lots of work if you have a skill in construction or you can do handyman type jobs.

Whiskey Row Off road Mountain Bike Race offers a choice of a 15, 30 or 50 mile course. My number one con is lack of medical care, specifically doctors. It should also be noted that Prescott has a huge retirement population of seniors. The average age is about 54. This may be a pro or con depending on what one is looking for in a community.

It’s a beautiful town with lots to do. The hardest adjustments for me in moving to Prescott: not a lot of young people, many are pretty narrow in their views, conspiratorial, and sort of down-and-out. Basic medial services are hard to come by, as most clinics aren’t taking new patients, have over-worked and stressed staff, and have hit-or-miss quality of doctors/PAs/NPs. I have to keep my expectations in check and remind myself that this is a small town!

Fires can be bad. I lived in Dewey and had to leave due to evacuation. Real thing. Housing is insane for the area, mainly due to the large amounts of retirement folks moving into the area. Wages are the worst, all the retirement people will do the job for less, so don't move here expecting far wages. Traffic is uncalled for. You can't enjoy the down town and the drive from PV past the Costco into Prescott is crazy for such a small road. I think they should tax snowbirds more for moving into the area. They are wasting the water from the Aquafer and making this part of Arizona bad for locals. If you have even lived in Wyoming, the wind is not bad. It's lovely year round.

I still want to live the.... have felt that way for many yeas, but I live in New Zealand and I am old (81), so it would take a lottery win for me to make it... But Prescott is top of my list for investigation should the occasion arise:. One of my daughters that spends a lot of time in AZ endorses my choice... I'll keep buying those tickets... :-) You need a lot of money to be allowed to emigrate into the USA, especially if old, which is fair enough. You don't need grifters any more than anywhere else. I'm a gun smith so could probably get work if I really wanted it, but really I'd need enough capital to see me out to make it viable... perhaps $3-4 million....

I can’t personally speak to the care in senior care facilities here as we don’t have any personal experience however I can say that not all rehabilitation centers are bad. In fact we have met many individuals who’s sole reason for moving to Prescott was to go to rehab many have now become business owners, pastors, and even parents. All fought their battles and came out on top and all are contributing members to the community. So I guess I get a little sad do to hear a blanket statement of rehab centers are ruining the community when in fact that isn’t the case.

This dates back to the American revolution with the British. The American Prescotts did not want to be associated with the British Prescotts so they changed the pronunciation and NOT the spelling. Missouri has similar humor and their pronunciations dating back to the Civil War. Missouri is the proper way to pronounce it, Missoura means you're from the South half of the state, and Misery is how many who left pronounce it.

Con #6 which should really be Con #3: the lousy healthcare system. Prescott is considered rural so does not attract the highest level of physicians because they earn less than a physician in a city does. Spouses of medical professionals have a hard time finding suitable employment because of the lack of industry here. Not only are the doctors NOT stellar, there are hardly any of them. For example, there is ONE urologist and ONE ear, nose and throat practice here. That means you have to wait at least a month or more likely two to get in to see them, and when you finally do, it is probable they are not competent. We soon found out after moving here four years ago that YRMC hospital has a reputation for killing people and we personally have had very bad experiences with the unqualified staff they employ. It was very recently exposed a neurologist was employed for over two years that was not board-certified. This was found out because the doctor was sued for malpractice (the patient won) but the hospital went to great lengths to cover it up. I hope to never have to be admitted to the hospital because I fear the care I will receive. Will they kill me or will they help me? Do not move here if you have a lot of health problems or, if you do, be prepared to go to Phoenix for your medical care!

I spent 6 months in Prescott and decided it isn't for me. The city holds WAY too many special events which turn the city into a dang tourist town. The streets are blocked off, it's difficult to get around due to heavy traffic and it's impossible to find parking. Many of these tourists end up discovering Prescott this way, moving there and growing the population, ruining it's appeal. They should just stop. The police do nothing about obnoxiously loud open-exhaust pipe cars which are all over the place - because the police do nothing. Prescott also lacks amenities. Most of the homes are expensive, unattractive and there are almost no modern/contemporary homes.

The valley seems to be a bit quieter because Greater Phoenix and Tucson have emissions checks. Prescott doesn't, so they remove the mufflers and the police do nothing.

DO NOT MOVE HERE My mother who is a senior citizen forgot to ring up some items she was purchasing in the self-checkout, Walmart called Prescott Police, and all hell broke loose. The officer instructed my mother that she was being arrested for shoplifting. My mother who was confused why she was being arrested kept asking the officer “Why am I being arrested” “I didn’t mean to not ring those items up.” Instead of explaining the situation, he told her to stop playing dumb and let her know she was being arrested for shoplifting. My mother who was shook as she’s gone her whole life without being in trouble with the law, asked the officer again, “Why am I being arrested”. Cuffs were shackled around her wrists very tightly which caused her to flinch and scratch the police officer, which he assumed was intentional, and started spouting out “NOW YOU’RE GETTING A FELONY”. My mother who has gone 60+ years of her life is now facing two felonies and we’re unable to afford an attorney, we also found out from the public defender that since my mother “was resisting arrest” it wouldn’t matter how hard the officer shackled the cuffs around here wrists since he had to use the “appropriate force to detain the suspect” even though my mother is a senior citizen. My mother’s wrists have a ¼” bump from the cuffs and were black and blue when I picked her up. She’s never been a criminal, you guys didn’t need to take things this far. Take my advice and DO NOT move here, this town is terrible. Everyone walks around grumpy, and the police pick on law-abiding citizens, meanwhile pounds of fentanyl are being smuggled at the border killing someone new every day. This is the most depressing town I've ever lived in, it's like a depressing wild west town where cops abuse citizens. I can't tell you the number of stories I've heard

There are plans for two additional highway routes already approved. The water situation here is not dependent on the Colorado river unlike many other areas in the state and the growth is limited to 1.5% per year so that helps not blow up like crazy. Thanks for watching!
