Super Mario Advance is such an underrated gem. Most people love the GBA remakes of Mario World and Yoshis Island but this one is in my opinion the best of the GBA remakes because it adds so much content which the original didn't have like the voice acting, the collectibles and even a brand new boss.

I remember playing this at Target right when the GBA came out (early 2001?) when they would attach the handheld to the wall for anyone to try. This impressed the hell out of me; it was so colorful and bright. Those huge number values give the game an arcade charm. It took awhile to find a store that had one in stock, but I finally got one around my birthday during the holiday season of 2001. Great times!!!

So let me get this straight: This game is about abusing Birdo, and beating up a mouse wearing shades, a combination of three green talking Ekans in one, a robotic Birdo, and a flame. Then you have to fight your own goal which is a hawk head, and take on a fat frog named Wart, who had a veggie machine in his own castle yet they kill him. After that madness, you are congratulated with Luigi, Toad, and Peach while Wart is oofed and covered in blood. Once that’s done, you find out Mario had a dream and all the sudden, naked people dance around you for celebrating. Great. 🤦‍♂️

I would love to see a Kaizo version of this specific game. I've already got an idea for making the final boss MUCH harder. He has 6 hits total, right? after the first hit, one of the Phantoms starts attacking you as if you've got a key, except the only way to make them go away is to defeat Wart. After 3 hits, a 2nd Phantom starts chasing you. After 5, there's 3 of them, and they're staggering their charges.

I have recently been considering this concept as a fan game: a Mario & Luigi game with Wart as the main antagonist. Princess Peach and Toadette would be additional companions, making a quartet just like in Mario 2. I'm still in the conceptual phase, though, but it's been slowly developing.

This is pretty fantabulous. Even if this is just Nintendo spamming Mario onto probably the best fangame in the world, you can tell the sprites were good and the voice actors gave it their all. Amazing! It's inspiring for voice actors to give it their all EVEN in a game that really wants to be The Thief and the Cobbler.
