Many widows are disinherited; left homeless and destitute by in-laws, making them vulnerable to rape, abuse, exploitation, and illness.
Women’s cultural inability to own and manage land, home and property keeps them vulnerable. Kenyan laws recognize women’s rights to own and inherit property, but in practice, many widowed women are chased away from their land or home. Courts are distant, and community ties are strong.
Upon a husband’s death, a widow can be “inherited” by a husband’s relative, who may have other wives. These wives are many times forced out to work at high risk jobs to support their inheritor if they have no education.
These are harmful cultural practices passed by time and we will address this issue on 23rd June 2023 during the International Widows Day Celebrations in Nakuru County,as part of it is already captured in #DomesticViolenceBill2015 and several amendments should be done to protect the Kenyan widows.
