Prostate Cancer - A Personal Journey Part 2

The second in my video diaries series about the diagnosis and treatment of my locally advanced prostate cancer. And yes, the beard has gone, temporarily at least - a shaving accident led to an over-correction, which ended up with me shouting "Ah, f**k it!" at the mirror and taking the whole lot off!

There is a reason for the different modes of address for the doctors in the UK. Surgeons, - those who lop bits off of you were originally the Barber Surgeon was a person who could perform minor surgical procedures such as bloodletting, cupping therapy or pulling teeth. Barbers could also bathe, cut hair, shave or trim facial hair, and give enemas. The surgeon came with the army at war but could be used by individuals in peacetime. Such people were not regarded as gentlemen. Doctors on the other hand are still referred to as Physicians, people who administered a physic, prepared by an Apothecary, people we know know as Pharmacists. To become a Physician required a degree and to get a degree you had to be a gentleman. Most parts of the world have removed the distinction - in the UK it remains.
