RedGard is fast and easy to apply with a nap roller, trowel or an airless sprayer.
All surfaces must be clean, dry and structurally sound.
Ensure that exteriors and wet areas have properly angled floors, sloped ¼” per foot to drains.
On shower floors, Custom recommends applying the waterproofing membrane over the mortar bed.
For waterproofing wet areas, always apply two coats of RedGard.
When waterproofing a shower, pre-treat corners and changes of plane where floors and walls meet.
Spread RedGard six inches on each side of the intersection.
Always apply the membrane to the bottom drain phalange for continuous coverage.
Embed 6-inch wide fiberglass mesh tape at drain transitions and to reinforce any gaps over 1/8th inch.
Allow these pre-treated areas to cure, then complete the first coat, beginning with the walls.
For general waterproofing, apply both coats at a rate of 110 SF per gallon.
For shower pan protection, use a coverage rate of 40 total SF per gallon, or 80 SF per coat.
The key to optimum coverage is applying RedGard in smooth, overlapping strokes.
If using a trowel, spread with the v-notch side held at a 45 degree angle and then flatten the ridges.
Consult the Technical Bulletin before using an airless sprayer.
You’ll know RedGard is dry when it turns from pink to red.
This typically takes 60-90 minutes. Actual cure time depends on jobsite conditions.
Before applying the second coat, cover any voids or pinholes.
Spread the second coat of RedGard at a right angle to the first.
Allow each coat to fully cure between steps and before flood testing or setting tile.
For general crack isolation, apply one coat at up to 100 SF per gallon.
Apply two coats at 50 SF per gallon, per coat to provide ANSI A118.12 protection.
Fill shrinkage cracks up to 1/8” wide by forcing RedGard into the crack with a trowel.
To isolate tile from the crack, the membrane must extend at least three times the tile’s width across the crack on the floor.
Periodically check the coverage rate or mil thickness to ensure an accurate film depth.
After application, protect the membrane from sunlight, soiling and punctures if tile will not be installed right away.
Do not apply RedGard if the temperature will fall below 40 degrees within 72 hours.
Always follow TCNA detail EJ171 for proper movement joint placement.

I'm trying to figure out if this will help prevent future cracks or is it just for pre-existing cracks? I will be intsalling a 2' x 4' porcelain tile

ClubMayview i know its designed for new installation but everything i see about cracks regarding it says that it helps with pre-existing cracks so they doing crack your tile but it doesn't state anything if it will help with a new crack in the concrete later on transferring to the tile and cracking it

Not a pro here. Does any tub surround adhesive stick well to a redguard covered wall? Or is there a specific type that should be used? What about tile? Would regular thinset work when tiling over redguard? I have yet to find a video on these questions/processes

Did you ever get this question answered? We're in the same position ATM ... we want to put 3" x 6" tiles around the top 1' 3" of walls that go up to 9'3" ceilings, the lower 8' have acrylic walls already.

If you’re looking for performance above that of an ‘off the shelf’ acrylic or siliconized acrylic surround adhesive, look for an STPE formulation. These Silyl-terminated polyethers generally bond exceptionally well to most materials, including acrylic coatings like Red-Gard. Sika HyFlex 150LM is one such sealant. An adhesion test on a throw-away sample is always a good idea.

Why isn't drywall listed under Redguard's "Suitable Substrates"??

Because it’s not a suitable substrate. You don’t want to used paper faced gypsum board in any damp location, especially in a shower.

Hmm. Don't know about that. Must not have been applied correctly. I have used it on backer board, steel, wood, skin, and cement. It sticks like a mofo when the substrate is prepared.
