Eddie Great instructional video and I recently purchased a FMS 1220 Ranger as my first RC plane. I watched a few videos online and heard mentioned about UV rays and the effect on foam planes. The Minwax looks like a great solution for that problem, plus making the surfaces a little tougher as they will get banged around and the coats will help prevent minor damages. I picked up a 8oz can of Minwax clear semi gloss with a foam brush at Lowes and will get going on coating the plane soon. Thanks again for the video

I'd say if you're worried about the added weight? You can get an electronic kitchen scale, put an empty container on it and tare (zero). Then weigh the MinWax or Pledge. Only a few extra grams of weight all told.

I have been using Zep floor polish. 4 to 6 coats in thin coats. Same thing I guess. Keeps dust from getting ground in the foam. Easy to dust off.

Hey, thanks a lot I’ve been looking for something that might toughen up my foam planes. When you say foam brush, is that like a hard bristle brush as opposed to a regular paint brush? Obviously, I guess these recommendations are safe for foam. Are there any ingredients I should steer clear of? I usually fly micros, guess these products wouldn’t add that much weight to really affect the flight, right? Anyway, I’m gonna try it because I’m certainly one that likes to keep the planes looking as good as I can and with foam it’s almost impossible for them not to get scratched up and dinged a bit. Thanks again.
@eddieksrc Жыл бұрын
They are literally a foam brush not a bristle brush. Any hardware store will have them in the paint department. I definitely recommend Minwax Polycrylic because it is water based. In my experience the solvent based polyurethane options will yellow over time.

Hey, Eddie, you know what would be good would be watching you actually apply a coat to a wing etc. If I just get the pledge and the foam brush, do I have to wet the brush or anything like that or just lightly apply the pledge with the brush? Do you put it in a container first and then dip the brush in? Sorry, I’m just trying to get a real good idea of how you go about doing this. I’ve got micros, and I’d like to toughen them up a little bit to protect them against dings, dents and imperfections that basically just come from handling them. Thanks.

Hi Eddie. Good Vid! Do you wipe down the plane with alcohol to remove any mold residue or oils from your fingers before applying the the clear coat?
@eddieksrc3 жыл бұрын
I don’t usually do that but it’s probably not a bad idea… I would test it in an inconspicuous place to make sure the alcohol doesn’t lift the paint though…

A very good result! I don't see any popcorn on the wing. Is it just filled with polyacrylic?

Correct the polycrylic helps hide the foam cells.

I've just found this video of yours and it's brilliant. In 2015, I bought the giant eflite carbon z t28 2m. Eight years later, I'm still flying that plane and it is in reasonable shape. However, after watching this, I'm now thinking seriously about giving it three coats of satin polycyclic minwax to give it a fresh look. Will put it on with a foam brush. But will spray on the first coat to prevent paint bleed on the plane? Is this the correct procedure?
@eddieksrc Жыл бұрын
Yes use a foam brush for the best result. Thanks for the comment!

@@eddieksrc Many thanks. I've been an rc flyer since 1986 and most of my fleet are balsa with glow engines. However, this big T28 carbon z foamie is one of the best flying planes I've ever had. So it's worth trying to preserve it with the minwax.

you should know that you can prime foam with any oil base paint or even polyurethane. these oil base or paint thinner base coatings do not dissolve foam. it's the acetone etc. in spray paints that does the damage We stripped the paint off of an Arrow Corsair using packing tape (pulls the paint right off) and coated it with 'minwax wipe on poly' as a hard primer and painted it with oil based semi-gloss or you can use any spray paint on the poly primer
@jimpuff84094 ай бұрын
Doesn’t it make the plane heavier to fly . They say not to add weight . Just wondering
@eddieksrc4 ай бұрын
@@jimpuff8409 it does add minimal weight on a plane this size but it does not effect the performance. I would not recommend this on a mini or micro size plane where weight is more important.

The mat finish in civilian plane are mostly see on plane made of fabric as it not really possible to have it shinny without huge coat and even if it not really flat mat as it look more like semi gloss on the fabric part but aluminium one are gloss , warbirds were paint mat brand new in the begining of the war by the factory but those plane were later polish by the mecanic crew when they were in service to gain few miles on top speed with better air flow , once use for few week the planes are all ready semi gloss finish even with camo too , later in the war they even remove all paint and polish them raw aluminum to get better air flow for performance and speed , the P-51 is a good exemple of that , it was first paint mat then polish in the beganing of it use and later not even painted and polish raw aluminum later in the war for this reason , don t even need to try to hide anymore , it is well explain in book like the Big show
