I just ran across this podcast today, and I'm completely HORRIFIED by the advice given to the girl who realized her dog was a lost dog. The fact that they said "Well, they're the one who lost the dog" disgusts me. Let me ask you this - has an accident ever occurred to you? imagine a few scenarios where this dog's true owner was not at fault..... 1. Owner in health crisis (ie: heart attack, injury, car accident) where the dog was able to get loose. 2. Burglary at home where dog was let out 3. Dog sitter lost the dog 4. Choice between saving a child from traffic or keeping ahold of the dog. 5. "Act of God" ie: tree falling on house or fence allowing the dog to escape. I volunteer for an organization that helps people find their lost dogs, and all of these scenarios are ones I have encountered. Now for the legality part - these ladies are obviously not lawyers.... But they did get it PARTIALLY correct. In this situation, the legal owner of the dog is the person who got it from the shelter. Shelters have a "stray hold" period where they are required by law to hold the dog while attempting to contact an owner. After this stray hold is up, they may put the dog up for adoption. Unfortunately, this period is extremely short, and doesn't give an owner enough time in many cases. But once that stray hold is up, and the shelter adopts a dog out, the new adopter is the legal owner. That doesn't make it morally right, but legally the dog is theirs. However, it's extremely critical to note that you can't just keep a dog that you found. The dog may look abused, it may look neglected, it may look scared. These are all the natural result of fending for themselves while they are lost, and doesn't mean they were abused. By law in most places, if you find a dog, you must notify the local animal control, and police. A stray hold in your home is most likely legal, where as long as you have notified police and AC, and done due diligence to attempt to find the owner, after a period of time you can assume ownership. At the end of the day, the advice given here while legally OK, is morally questionable, and now someone is going to suffer, wondering whether their dog suffered, whether they had a good life, and whether it was loved or remembered them. ugh. So selfish.

Terrible advice regarding the dog situation. Put yourself in the shoes of the first owner. If the current owner cares enough about the dog, they would return him/her to the first owner, where he/she belongs and probably misses a lot!

I kind of disagree about the full name reference. Most of the time, you can't really choose what people call you. Example, my family has a nickname for me that I've had since I was young. My high school friends call me by my last name. And because I have a long name, people always give me a nickname or say Ana for short (my name is Anastasia). I would like my significant other to call me by my actual name when referring to me. It could just be because my whole life, people chose what they wanted to call me but I think having my partner call me by my actual name makes me happy.

The advice given about the lost pup and writing an anonymous letter is so incredibly idiotic. You do not know the circumstances behind how the pup was lost in the first place and the year long struggle of sleepless nights not knowing what happened to their dog. Meet the previous owner in person and determine next best steps together. There’s a good chance both owners love the dog and want what’s best for it. The level of stupidity demonstrated here is mind blowing.

The advice about the dog is disgusting. This current “owner” may be in possession of a stolen dog. You are giving advice that potentially goes against the law; you don’t know all the facts nor how this dog came into the possession of the so-called rescue. The owner may have been looking for the dog this entire time as evidence by current “owner” finding relevant IG posts. Does this not matter to you!? If someone stole your dog, sold him, transported him several states away, then kept him for over a year….you’d be just fine with that? This advice is so ignorant, cruel, and downright wrong - what are you even thinking by giving it? Yikes! The current “owner” is now responsible for reaching out bc she knows she could be in possession of stolen property (dogs are considered property still, sadly). By knowingly skirting this issue, she’s opening herself up to legal ramifications, and you’re encouraging her to do so…
