Putting the Bearing Buddies in a freezer for 30-45 minutes before installing will help shrink them ever so lightyly, easing installation.

this idea actually works wel👍👍l also rotate the cap inside the wheel hub 20 or so revolutions and use a block of wood and a heavy hammer to help drive it in

Yes, you CAN put too much grease in a Bearing Buddy. You shold just pump the grease untill the spring just moves, then STOP! As long as there is pressure inside with the grease, water will not be able come in. If you pump i so the spring moves out all the way, it will push the grease out the seal on the other side of the wheel and be all over your wheel (I see so many trailers like that at the boat landing. The seal can't hold the much pressure and it will stretch out from the spring pressure.

The bearing buddy is nice, but what you have to remember is behind the slotted nut is a washer, so your only putting grease up to the washer, the only way to get the entire cylinder full of grease and make it work right is to remove that washer, put your slotted nut back on put the bearing buddy back on pump it full until it starts squishing out the edge of the bearing buddy, take it back off, put your washer back on and you're slotted nut with the pin put the bearing Buddy back on, and add a little more grease.

Hello, did you have to remove the zerk fitting first on the end of the spindle before installing the bearing buddy? Dexter ez lube system has a zerk fitting screwed into the end of the spindle. Did you remove that?
@HowToWithJames
@HowToWithJames Жыл бұрын
I did not remove a zerk fitting. If I had one I guess I would remove it since this method would be an alternative solution to using a zerk fitting.

I don't think adding the bearing buddy system is necessary if you have the Dexter ex lube. I think it's one or the other.

How much grease is in the hub when the buddy says its full? per timken your hub should only be about half full in the cavity to prevent churning in high tempatures, im guessing the buddy keeps some pressure in the hub to keep water & such from entering thru the seal & im also scratching my head about these ppl who say they have never pulled the buddy off in 20yrs just keep putting grease in every yr, so if thats the case where is the excess grease going? eventually after 20yrs of pumping grease it will be full & have to squirt out past the seal which is not good & it dont just disappear like a fart in the wind !

I was wondering if the grease works its way to the back bearing over time? The combination of the spring and use pushed it back or ?

I don't think it does, all it does is fill the void but not actually push grease through the rear bearing. This video shows them being overfilled.

@@4.8Sam we tow our triple axle trailer hundreds of miles each way, launch it in salt water then return home. You want fresh grease entering from the back (inner bearings) pushing to the outer. All water and any contaminates are replaced by fresh grease. Can’t imagine having to remove the hubs and inner seals just to regrease bearings. Terrible design

The grease isn’t suppose to come out the front like it did it should come out the hole in the side of the bearing buddy.Also learn that the nozzle on your grease gun is adjustable .You can turn it to loosen the grip it has on the zerk fitting or tighten the grip.

I appreciate you want to help me with your comments. I noticed before doing this video that the bearing buddy has gone through several updates compared to when it first came out and while they look the same they are not all built the same. If you notice in this newly updated video describing the same same bearing buddy I have he says the grease will seep around the edges indicating it is full. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ol6Vk4yKibtnhc0 specifically look at the 58 second mark. I am aware the grease gun is adjustable, this is a new gun and I hadn't adjusted prior to the video and I left it in hoping that could provide some humor in the video to show not everything you do will be perfect. Please remember I can edit in or out anything in my own videos. If you see it in the video that is because I meant for it to be in the video. Thanks for watching.

The pressure from the spring does that but that's also why you check it after a few miles in case there's some air that was displaced, then top them off

Youshould only need to add grease until the spring start to come out a little. If you pump grease like this guy did, you'll eventually have grease pushing thru the rear seal and all over the back of the wheel. Seals are not made that strong.

I agree with your comment but the alternative to not having one is worse. Before putting the bearing buddy on I made sure the inner bearing was well greased and now with this on it will be well sealed from water and dirt. So it won't get grease to it but it will protect it better than having nothing and the outer bearing will be better off for having it installed.

Folks unless new grease enters from the inside and pushes old grease out the front how does this help with servicing your hubs? Think in terms of the most serious usage….a salt water boat trailer
@johnqpublic9074

This ISNT for a dexter EZ lube style system. This is for the old school manually packed bearing hubs. All this does is keep the bearing area full of grease to prevent water from getting past the inner seal. Like on boat trailers. They will need to be opened cleaned and repacked on a schedule.

If sealing the hub was the only intent, then the original tin cap would be enough. No need to buy the Bearing Buddy. I put these on my trailer more than 20 years ago, and with regular greasing I've never needed to open the hub up, and have never lost a wheel bearing.

Before doing this video I talked to people who had used them for decades and then researched videos from the company. There is not much to this product and in minutes you can be an expert too, and I heard nothing but good things in all the information I found. As for the price I put a link in the description of the video. In my opinion this is a great product and way better than a bearing cap. I haven't had any problems with mine since creating this video. If you would rather have a bearing cap I understand but this is what I am doing. Thanks for watching and good luck with whatever you decide!
