Our frost line is about 2 feet, I can not imagine going down 8 ft. You sure do not want to have to replace it. I just installed one and used a 4 ft bury. I only went down about 3 ft. I figured the long pipe sticking up would not bother anything. Not realizing that it would make the pipe easier to bend because of the leverage. I did install a t-post , but feel it is a little vulnerable now. I may try to put a post in to give it more stability. Thanks for sharing.

I always knew that metal banding just seems way to good to throw away.

What happens to your hand while cleaning the cutter if a rock hits the trottle control it might make you think that you should have shut down the motor first?

Maybe so, it’s pretty slow moving. But still probably good advice.

There is one thing I'd add, I would place a treated wood shim between the post and the hydrant so that the banding could be pulled tight without flexing the hydrant, if the shim is below the handle, so it sits between the hydrants supply pipe and the post, it wouldn't obstruct the handle in any way. Either way, this is definitely a good tip to keep a hydrant standing.

Nice video. Without the post, that hydrant will surely be bent. Using that metal banding?...try a punch and nail/screw the spin! In my experience, the banding is a bit dangerous because the drill bit "grabs" and turns banding into a spinning knife. Yikes! What I do is "punch two holes" (maybe 2 inches apart)...one hole as a starter hole for my drill bit and the second for a screw to tack the banding to a solid surface and thus avoiding the spinning. Finally, the 2nd hole can then be used (with same screw and another aligning punch hole) to tie down that sharp/loose banding end once you wrap it around the pole.

great tips! we used steel post on either side of out hydrants. as well as a clip to keep it from being turned on. I would love to hear some advise on how to get my big grass fed bulls to go into our cetch pen, they refuse even with sweet feed n mineral in there. when I did coax them in, they ripped my pen apart in 5 mins! one jumped, crushing my gates. the rest flipped the panels off and fencing staples went flying! I am about to dart them, but then there the issue of loading them. their stubborn, wiser then me, and have learned to avoid capture!

Our bulls are as gentle as a lamb‘s, I buy our bulls from Kit Pharo, he has them rated as far as gentle 1 through 5, 5 being the best. All of our bulls are as gentle as a Dead hog. I’ve had ranchy bulls in the past. But now if they’re idiots I sell them, a bull that is an idiot will raise daughters with the same disposition.😬 Gentle animals will finish better and taste better as well. Our bulls literally will follow you right in the corral. It’s hard to be Christian with bulls that will-tear down everything in sight. 😉 I spend a lot of time with my bulls, they knew who’s boss, and they’re gentle by nature. Good luck Luke

When it comes time to replace those innards, you'll need to rotate the head on that hydrant...and the post will be in the way.

That is very true, but when a bowl or a kid hits it with the four wheeler it won’t be bent over in a 90% angle.

Were raising chickens for the first time and my first hen has started laying. Would be great to watch a video on chickens if you raise them or have a friend that raises chickens. Answer Questions like: How to store the eggs? How long will a egg last stored? I have a 3 roosters do I need to remove 2 of them they don't fight? If I let a hen keep her eggs to raise then what should we expect (Will they keep laying?)? Should we take all the eggs and just incubate some? Currently mark the ones we don't take with a magic marker so we don't have to candle them every morning. What is the best food for chickens laying eggs? Best way to prevent algae in there water tank clean? What is the difference with scratch vs other food? Does and don't raising chickens things like that. We also have a small female duck that grow up with the chickens and thinks she is a chicken. I think the chickens think the duck is a chicken just a weird chicken they even sleep together. Thank you

+Lynn Please keep these good ideas coming. Yes we do have chickens, every one of your questions is a good question. Sometimes I forget the questions people have when starting to Homestead. That is a very good idea I could do the whole series on chickens chicken coops practice of storing eggs etc. I will in the future. Thank you Lynn.. Luke

Just public service announcement ... don’t ever stick you hand into the business end of power tool while motor is running...... probably a good idea to never stick your hand in to the sharp bits even if the tool is off on a count of the possibility of the piston coming to rest on the compression stroke of the motor
