PROTECTING bluebirds is easier than you may Think

Declining numbers of eastern bluebirds are a concern. We put up some bluebird Bird houses and it is so neat to see them hang around. Just about every year we have bluebirds in the house. There is some maintenance but not much. I would encourage people that have a little space to put some houses down see if you can attract them in.

How do we guard from rat snakes? They are the real menace. Some sort of wire mesh inverted funnel around the pole is what I envision.

I would not call them common sparrows in your videos, only the invasive house sparrow threatens our native birds. All of our native sparrows are good and should not be harmed.

This video doesn't show anything about "protecting" bluebirds. We just lost 3 bluebird eggs today because of aggressive house sparrows, which I despise. Why put up a bluebird box if these predators are just going to destroy the bluebirds and their eggs?

Although I don't have my first build mounted yet, after a bit of research I've heard a torpedo baffle will protect from both birds & raccoons. Vs the cone shaped ones that larger snakes can get around. I've also heard of snakes getting in from trees / bushes quite a distance away (6 feet / 2 meter) so try to keep it out in the open if possible. Which in turn makes summer vents important, and closing them up in the winter important too.

Yeah rat snakes will decimate a brood of babies. I think your approach would depend on where your birdhouse is mounted. Mine are on 4x4 posts. I think I will rig an inverted cone of mesh wire screen (hardware cloth) on the posts to deter snakes from climbing up.

I use sparrow spookers when the first egg is laid until they fledge. So far no house sparrows, but we have decided to trap the sparrows anyway just to be sure.

Raccoons and squirrels can easily climb a wooden pole as shown. Raccoons have a long reach and can easily devour chicks and eggs.

I agree, certainly couldn’t hurt. The shingle makes a big difference in longevity, I wish I would’ve done that to the others that we had. They’re completely write it out now

Sorry but having house on utility pole or tree is the worst place to have it mounted to guard against ground predators that can easily climb,cat raccoon snake etc.. A 1/2" piece of metal electric conduit 5' out of ground greased with baffle would be optimum.

That wasn't a song sparrow then. What you saw was a house sparrow. There are lots of resources about how to protect bluebirds from house sparrows on KZbin . House sparrows are not native and are very invasive. Song sparrows in the other hand are native and are not a threat to bluebirds.

Blue birds are not a nuisance...........House Sparrows are to the point that they are one of the few federally UN protected species......basically the rat bird of the bird world.

@@chrisramsey3603 eastern bluebirds don't crap on patios or dive bomb people. You are mixing up eastern bluebirds with another bird, likely barn swallows. Both are federally protected. Educate yourself, you're making a fool of yourself on social media and nearly admitting to breaking federal laws concerning protected bird species.

I GOT two of these and they are working very well the sparrows can't get in the box but the tree swallows can the people that sell them are very honest!

I don’t understand what you did to protect the bluebirds. We had one successful brood of bluebirds and then tree swallows however they were harassed by house sparrows and now it’s even worse . I may just have to stop putting the boxes up , been trying many things but they won’t go away
