About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

Thanks so much! I'm a person that learns by doing, so if I show you what I'm doing and my thinking behind it, I hope that it helps you to imagine how that would work in your own garden.

A very timely video, Liz. I need to protect my crops from the fierce Shetland winds using larger mesh netting, not from the birds, so the tips on how to build the framework have been invaluable. Thank you!

Glad it was helpful, but I would use a very firm method of hold the netting on to the frame and make sure that it's tight against the frame, so there is little room for the wind to pick the netting up and rip it off the frame.

Nice video, as always. How about tying some twine across the hoops to provide some support for the net instead of those clipping rods?

That would work really well, it's a great idea!

Great video Liz. Your strawberries are looking great. I had 2 black grape vines in Barry which I kept mainly for the leaves to make dolmades. The birds knew exactly the right time to eat the little 🍇 grapes. Lol. How are your vines doing. You should have some beautiful leaves to pick by now😊

Hi Margaret, the vines are doing okay, the one in the polytunnel just needs some time to settle its roots into the ground and then I'm sure it will grow away quickly. We have two more in large pots outside the polytunnel and they are waiting for us to creating a framework for them to grow on. As always, far too many ideas and never enough time!

Great video! I'd love to see an update on your walk-in brassica cage that you linked to from this video. How did it work out for you and would you recommend any changes or enhancements if you were to build a new one? Many thanks.

It worked really well. Potential changes would be to have made it a bit bigger, so that I could fit more plants into it! I took that cage down to use the space as part of a market garden, and used low tunnels to protect individual rows of crops.

Is there a proper name for the cane joining balls?
@LizZorab
@LizZorab 29 күн бұрын
Each company that makes them calls them something different. Try searching for ' bamboo cane ball connectors'

I love the idea of the little balls with the holes for bamboo canes for a frame. Where could we purchase them? Also the bars that you put on top... that is the perfect set up. I've tied heavy twine between the hoops to hold my netting up one run of twine on either side and one up the middle. It works but is really bothersome at times.

I've got a couple half-barrels on our deck--I grow our cherry tomatoes there. Last year was great--no problem. But this year, the squirrels have discovered them. Any ideas how I can protect the fruit? We absolutely love these cherry tomatoes and don't want to share with critters.

Sorry to read that you have a visiting squirrel. I'm battling the squirrel attacks too, if I ever find a way to stop them, I'll certainly make a video about it!
