About 40% of the runner beans (including Greek Gigantes) have regrown in following years. It certainly isn't foolproof and a very wet winter has wiped out the plants, although interestingly a drier but colder winter did not kill them.

Hey, how deep of a container for onions and leeks? I have Alison Craig (the big one) as well as smaller red onions. I also have leeks, which I wish to place in containers as well. Both the onions and leeks are currently in small pots ready to be transplanted. I live on the west coast of Canada.

Leeks - I'd use a minimum 10 - 12 inch deep containers, unless they are raised beds that are on soil (not on legs) in which case it doesn't matter how deep. Onions need approx 6 inches of soil depth, but again it will always be about the quality of soil in the containers rather than the depth.

@@LizZorab does it matter whether they are in the ground or containers? I want them to do well. It's my first time. Why do leeks need such a deep container if they form close to the surface? Is all that space for its roots?

Liz, thanks for this. One question: is it essential to remove the buds which will be under the soil surface level?

Not essential as they will rot away, but it gives the stem a better chance to send the messages to the plant cells to change to become root nodes rather than stem or leaf nodes. (I love that plants can do this!)

I'm not sure what breed my cat is but she looks so much like Monty, thick grey coat, dark eye and mouth liner, ringed tail low hanging belly, and laid back attitude. Love that she adopted us. Loved seeing Monty over the years. Pets help us keep it real.

I know exactly what you're going through. Van Gogh, aka Fat Tony, THE bet "stray" cat in the world, passed May 31. We re brokenhearted. I hope Monty and Fat Tony are playing together on the Other Side.

How sad, had a few tears well up. We lost our 20yr old Daisy in a Sept and Jacob was 16 when he went too 6yrs prior; he’d sit on my back like that. It took until Jan but now have siblings Betsy & Bumble who’ve just turned 9mths…..I still miss them dearly but these have given such joy x
