Many people aren't wearing these types of styles to "protect" their hair. They just don't want to admit that they don't like the appearance of their natural hair texture. Thus, the "protective" style is a way to hide the hair and still be able to claim that they are "natural".

It’s not about “making it grow”, it’s about protecting it from damage so it doesn’t break off and prevent itself from growing.

Exactly. It RETAINS the length that we grow, and when done properly, it is low maintenance outside of your install. Idk how she’s saying you’re manipulating the hair too much when you can literally protective style 1-2 times a month and not manipulate at all in that time besides washing and remoisturizing. When I wear my hair out I have to manipulate it almost everyday so that doesn’t even make sense but to each their own🤷🏾♀️lol
@OneSmartFro3 жыл бұрын
@@teshamiller6001 I lose the most hair when I prep my hair for a protective style versus wearing my hair out. I also don’t wear protective styles in that long. Which is why I said they don’t become that protective when you take them out every two weeks. If I was to put a protective style in and take them out every 2 weeks I’ll be bald. Because you get breakage prepping for certain protective and low manipulation styles and there your not retaining length. Which makes it seems like your hair is not growing. I don’t restyle my hair during the week. I have a whole week of upload break down my regimen and show my regimen helps me not have to restyle my hair during the week.

@@teshamiller6001 idk maybe I'm wrong but I could've sworn she said you manipulate your hair too much in a protective style if you're like her and feel the need to switch up your style every week. Otherwise I'm assuming a protective style is supposed to be low maintenance.

Only way you need that protection is if your damaging your natural hair while wearing it out, and if that is the case you’ll just damage it after the protective style is taken out. If you have a solid routine and keeping a good moisture/strength balance your isn’t going to get damaged and break.

I braid my own hair, sometimes I do chunky kinky twists, but it’s important to not do them TOO SMALL, and DO NOT use too much hair! I still feel like the added hair just dries your hair out, no matter what. When I do my kinky twists with extensions, I twist my hair before hand in premade sections. So you hair is not split within the extension, keep it together.The convenience is great especially me being a busy mom/wife. I deal with a lot of shrinkage, so although Iooove my fro, my hair dries out within 2-3 days😂. You just have to know your hair, and how to deal with it.

For me? :) No trimming grows the hair, not even dusting in between because when you do it often enough you are cutting that growth right out of there. Learned the hard way. And so I mean it's that and lots of patience because you need that patience not to even dust ever so often. Yes, keep your mitts off of there! LOL If you are stuck at one length for a long time, it's time to re-assess what you've been doing, especially where trimming & dusting goes. If you are otherwise looking after your hair and there's no breakage, the math is fast made. ;)

I get that you don’t like protective styling what I wasn’t understanding what you meant by it doesn’t grow your hair? That was confusing to me. I guess if you are taking it down every two weeks you aren’t going to be giving your hair much of a break. I stick to braids and I still wash my hair still moisturize my hair so that has eliminated at least for me, a lot of the issues you described. I will put two strand twists in for a week or so at a time. If I am rocking my puff it comes down nightly, remoisturized and tied down till the morning and it goes back up. When I wore wigs they were not lace fronts not anchored in any way. They were adjustable and I took them off daily, again still taking care of the hair underneath. Unfortunately people want to call being lazy doing protective styles. If you are loosing a lot of hair on the instal and take down ( more than shed hair), something is not right. People who feel they have to pull your hair as tight as possible one should run from. Not washing your hair for weeks on end because you are “protective” styling is just goofy to me. I am way older and have had my hair braided with and without extensions off and on all my life. So did the girls who grew up around me and hair was thriving. To see so many women destroying their hair now just saddens me. I am thankful that I do have a braider that knows how to properly install many different styles and it doesn’t take a weekend for her to do them. The key to all of this is to learn your own hair and what works and doesn’t work for it. It has nothing to do with it growing or not growing or liking or not liking. It’s all about what your hair says works. From styling products and over all hair care to what styles work best for it. I know I had the best results when I was do my wash days and mid week doing a rinse out ( I throughly rinsed my hair out with just water to get all the product out ; pre co washing being a thing), and then following it with my usual products I used for moisture. No one was doing such a thing but that is what was working for my hair. I may need to go in and do a co wash mid week and redo my hair if that’s what my hair is needing. I have just learned to listen more to my hair than anything else. So you keep doing what works best for your hair ( By the way boo it’s long enough for an updo just sayin you got some inches sis 😁). 💙

I believe protective styling especially depending on what your doing. Causing a lot of damage. I lose the most hair when I’m parting my hair for braids. I also said I’m indecisive and don’t leave my protective styles in long. So if I was to do a protective style every 2 weeks and I lose the most hair when I do them. My hair will not retain length and this make it seem like it’s not growing. Which is why I said this is my beef with protective styling.

If you want to wear a protective style go ahead, but at the same time I understand. I'm looking for an excuse not to wear a protective style AT ALL, not even a PONYTAIL to grow my hair. Because people saying that protective styles and even the loose protective styles grow your hair when you use it properly, but at the same time when you use it, it doesn't grow your hair I hate protective styles because I'm a preacher I'm trying to teach people to be comfortable in the hair that they're born with and to love the hair that they're born with instead of relying on a hair texture that is not theirs to feel beautiful. I know that you can wear braids with your natural hair and you can wear braids to grow your hair whether it's with your natural hair or fake hair, but with the hair length that I have, I never look good in it and at the same time my hair is so short that my scalp is too itchy and painful to handle it. Every time I put my hair in any protective style it always look ugly. I don't look good in any protective style unless it is unnatural and it doesn't even have to be that smooth hair texture in order for it to look good on me. Sometimes it's got to be long or at least slightly long to my neck. My hair is too short to even look good in any hairstyle other than an afro and I hate it. Help. I just want to leave my hair out 24/7 without any protective style so my hair can just grow out naturally just like how the little kids can without even having to worry about how to take much care of their hair. Like do you notice how the little kids can sleep on any fabrics, they don't even have to wear a bonnets, they literally break all the rules, not even worry about any protective styling to take care of their hair and their hair is still flourishing! It's not just white kids, black kids too! Little kids literally be breaking All the rules and they can grow their hair without any worry! We should follow those rules! There were times that I've been wearing protective styling for years and my hair STILL be short! Eat healthy, no protective styling AT ALL, being active! We should do what the kids do

Also, the style you have on in this video is a low manipulation style, not quite the same as a protective style which gets your hair up and away from your shoulders and hides the ends from daylight.

I get that you hate protective styling, but I love protective styling! Protective styling gives you and your hair a break! Putting in a protective style for a week is a waste of time and money! Your hair will grow and recuperate from you putting your hands in it. Please give protective styles a chance!

I personally just don't like the look of some "protective" styles (in particular those with the added fake hair). I don't think that some of the looks are appropriate for grown or professional women.

It Is the “fake” look of the hair for me💯 And I see more women suffering from it than getting great results 💯

Facts, I never liked the way fake hair looks on me. Plus I think some of the styles are to heavy and damaging for my fine strands.
