Literally my favorite band ever, even as all of my tastes in music have evolved and changed, protest has been a constant. MORE PTH!!! Always happy to watch you react to them! The story behind this album is about American history (Palimpsest - something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form) and how we tend to rewrite things in a better light than true history would show. This specific song was about the Hindenburg disaster and how everybody tends to forget it was born out of Nazi Germany, with an excerpt of the lyrics pointing out the famous photograph; “Fireball and tower Conceal the swastika Which might have served to sour Our desired erotica” Once again, great reaction!

This album blew me away when it came out in 2019 having been a fan of Kezia and Fortress but not listening to the band for a little while. I seem to recall the concept being around the greatness of the USA told via the tragedies and triumphs of ordinary people rather than what the 'elite' consider to be the reasons for its greatness. Songs cover topics ranging from Amelia Earhart to the Boston molasses flood. Very apposite for its time. Turns out a bunch of Canadian metallers understand the US better than many of its own citizens. IMO of course...
@dtdthesloth95753 жыл бұрын
That thing you mentioned about albums generally having a story behind them is very true with this record. My understanding is that it’s a concept record focused around all the highs and lows as well as just some interesting stories of American history. The title of the record “Palimpsest” is defined as a piece of paper or parchment that has been written on many times. So the whole album is about how America is a place that has been made and remade constantly and that it can continue to be improved despite what came before. At least that’s my understanding of it.
@RyanCogar3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the 2 that always stuck with me were "The Canary" (with the Amelia Earheart perspective/references) & "All Hands" (the same references/perspective but with the Great Molasses Flood of Boston in 1919). Knowing some of the context & getting those lyrics with the beautiful musical arrangements. Just hits all kinds of spots. 🤣🤘👍🔥

@droptableaccount1820 Жыл бұрын
@@buckfuttler2877 I have to agree with the both of you. The songwriter is undeniably pozzed in their political opinions but their musical talent more than outweighs that. Even the most outwardly political song, Little Snakes, does make solid points despite its lack of subtlety. Some of the lyrics are leftist cringe but just as many are incredible, such as this song's portrayal of the impact of photography on the universal consciousness.

This was the song/album that got to me into PTH. Incredible concept album about 1930s America with many aspects that resonate strongly with things going on in modern times (history repeats, eh?). Amazing thing about this album (aside from everything about it) is that it took extra time to finish because the vocalist was suffering from debilitating loss of voice where he couldn't sing anything or even hardly speak. This track was the one he was most worried about when coming back with the last bit with the huge leap. Apparently he nailed it in the recording so it holds a special place for him. Something I think is worth knowing is that Rody Walker, the singer, had to re-teach himself to sing almost entirely from scratch to record for this album after he blew his voice out REALLY bad in 2018. Uncle Geebz, do more protest please! A little background on their records as I'm a long time fan. Kezia was their first LP. They wrote and recorded while still in high school. It is a concept record with elements of Dostoevski and punk and its still one of my favorites. Fortress was next with the track Bloodmeat that you heard. A lot more production value and more "metal" elements. Scurrilous came third with Rody, the lead singer taking over the primary lyric writing duties. With Volition, they parted ways with their record label and funded the album with a kickstarter campaign that became quite successful. Their original drummer Moe left the band so they brought in Chris Adler of Lamb of God fame to record. Next up was their ep Pacific myth where they adopted something of a subscription model where they released one song a month with subscriber feedback to guide the writing throughout. Finally is Palimpsest which this song is off of. This record is significant in an added way because Rody blew his vocals out a few years ago and had to delay the record for rehab and such. Anyway, love the channel. Hope this guides your journey a little. My vote goes for something off of Kezia like blindfolds aside or heretics and killers.
