8:05... Yes!!! I completely understand this Catholic and Protestant comparison. I grew up Seventh-day Adventist, and "came home" to the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Discovered Catholicism in 2008 and was confirmed in 2010. I've thought of priesthood for many years, finally discerning with the help of a kind Benedictine priest. Whether or not that ultimately happens, I gladly serve God and His Church as a Music Director, Organist and Liturgist already...

The Church doesn’t come from the Bible - the Bible comes from the Church. Plus, your bible is incomplete and inaccurate anyway. Your post-enlightenment imitation of Christianity is greatly lacking the richness and depth of the true Faith of Jesus. Only Jehovah Himself can change minds as hardwired as this - only He can share the Light and Grace needed to see Truth - I know from experience... @@renaldosimmons9182 - Jesus is the Word. He left us a Church, not a Bible. The Church centuries thereafter produced for us the canon of Holy Scripture as we know it today. Jesus established His One and Only Church when He was still here, and promised that He (the Way, Truth and Life) would be with us ALWAYS. He didn’t say He would disappear, let everything fall to apostasy, and then truth would be rediscovered in 1844 or reestablished in 1863... Imaginary nonsense. Anyway, this is a dead-end discussion. The additional beauty of the Latin Mass is its universality. Many years ago I was an altar boy in New York City. We had two Vietnamese priests in residence who had fled North Vietnam. They only spoke Vietnamese and French. I spoke or understood neither, but when I rang the bell and we went out to the altar and the priest said "Introibo ad altari Dei", it did not matter. Everyone in attendance knew the Mass and felt the universality. I have been to Mass in Italy, Japan, Germany and Korea and yes it was Mass but I wish it could have started with "Introibo ad altari Dei." I would have felt more at home.

The Holy Eucharist is life itself. The traditional Latin Mass has been a humbling experience for me in the past year. I left the Catholic faith as a kid and 35 years later came home. Now experiencing TLM once a month I'm blown away by the reverence I've been missing all my life. God is good. Always!

Born a cradle-Catholic 57 years later stumbling into the TLM, it is refreshing and greatly reverent participating as a witness to the Passion of Christ, and not familiar with Latin, but now knowing it is our ancient Catholic language, I am hungry to learn it, the very least our common prayers and or the rosary. This was amazing. I am a convert baptized and received into the Church last July. The greatest gift during the pandemic was finding St. John Cantius online and watching their live streamed masses. I was blown away when I first started watching, I had never seen the litergy done in such a beautiful way. So happy to have found this tour and interview. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Catholic priests like Fr. Joshua. I’m a Presbyterian pastor, but I was raised Catholic. I admire anyone brave enough to take a vow of celibacy, as that was the one BIG thing that made me become a Presbyterian pastor rather than a Catholic priest. I’m not sure I could’ve been strong enough as a man to do that, so I applaud anyone who can make that sacrifice.

SMALL QUOTE _"The Lord says: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you28. Here an iniquity or evil seems to be commanded; then it is a figurative phrase"_ -AUGUSTINE- On Christian doctrine, 3,16 If the phrase is mandatory and prohibits evil or vice, or iniquity or crime, or commands utility or beneficence, then the phrase is not figurative. But if it appears to command evil or iniquity, or prohibit utility or beneficence, in this case it is figurative. The Lord says: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you28. Here an iniquity or evil seems to be commanded; then it is a figurative phrase by which we are recommended to participate in the Lord's passion, and we are admonished to gently and usefully retain in our memory that his flesh was wounded and crucified for us MY COMMENT augustine says that phrase jesus said in john 6:53 is a figurative phrase. Carholics base the real presence on john 6 being literal. But augustine says jesus was using figurative speech. As we believe, that jesus said it in a figurative manner.

Here another -Augustine- Letter 98,9 9. According to our frequent way of speaking, we usually say, when Easter approaches: "Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow will be the passion of the Lord." But the Lord has suffered many years ago and the passion has only taken place once. On the same day as Sunday we say: "Today the Lord was risen", although many years have passed since he was resurrected. Nobody is so stupid that they throw lies in our face when we speak like that. We name such days -by their resemblance- to those others on which the above events took place. We say that it is the same day, although it is not the same, but another -similar- to it in the turning of the ages. Likewise, when we refer to the celebration of the sacrament of the altar, -we say that on that day happens- -what did not happen on that day- , but happened in the past. Christ was slain only once in person and is slain not only on the solemnities of Easter, but also every day among peoples, in that sacrament. That is why the person who answers that he is immolated now does not lie, when asked. The sacraments would not be sacraments at all if they did not have -certain similarities with those realities- of which they are sacraments. For that similarity they are usually called the same realities. -Just as in its peculiar way- -the sacrament of the body- -of Christ is the body of Christ-, and the sacrament of the blood of Christ is the blood of Christ, so also the sacrament of faith is faith. Now, believing is nothing more than having faith. Therefore, when you answer what a child believes that does not yet feel the affection of faith, it is answered that he has faith through the sacrament of faith and that he is converted to God through the sacrament of conversion, because that same answer belongs to the celebration of the sacrament. Its a way of speaking. He gives the example of holy sunday we say today the lord resurrected (but we know he didnt resurrected today but a day like this many years ago) ill give an example of christmas, on christmas we say ''today the lord is born" (althoug we know he wasnt born today). Then he says likewise, when we refer to the eucharist (sacrament of the altar) we say its happening something that its not happenig. We say the sacrifice of christ is happening (although we know its not happening but happened in the past). So christ isnt born every 25th of december, he doesnt resurrect every holy sunday, and he is not sacrified in every eucharist althought we say he is. So if augustine was at the eucharist and he said "the lord is being sacrificed", in his mind and in his heart he knew that day jesus wasnt being sacrified but was sacrified just once many yeaes ago. If augustine was on holy sunday , and he said "today the lord resurrected", in his mind and in his heart he knew jesus didnt resurrected on that day, but just once many years ago. So for augustine no sacrifice takes place at the eucharist. The catechism says indeed theres a sacrifice at the eucharist. So they dont think as augustine thought. Why is this important? The book of hebrews ch9 and 10, says when sacrifices are efficient they stop. They acomplished the goal so they are not performed anymore. Ineficient sacrifices are done again and again. So literal and figursrive meaning of the eucharist matters, and a lot. If its literal then a sacrifice takes place, and is repeated at each mass and that is calling the sacrifice ineficient. If its symbolic, its a memorial and no sacrifice happens, then its not repeated and so, we dont call the sacrifice inefficient. What happened? In israel when people sinned they sacrificed a lamb, but they didnt care about sacrificing that lamb, so they sinned again and sacrified a lamb, and again and again. That saceifice didnt make people turn away from sin. They didnt care. So God, as his wish has always been that his people are holy and abide to his law, made a better sacrifice, one that truly turn people away from sin. So nobody cared about killing a lamb, but when people saw the son of god was the one that died, people cared, it touched the heart of people, and people (the elect) turned away from sin, they dont want to dishonor that sacrifice by sinning. So the elect stopped stealing, left the mistress, stoped lying, stoped being bad sons to their parents and never did that again. The sacrifice was eficient. No need to perform it again. Read the book of hebrews from ch 5-10 specially 9-10. Jesus cannot be offered several times. His sacrifice was eficient. Then for me, the literal - symbolic debate is not a thing about fighting cause we like fights, its a thing about calling the sacrifice efficient or inefficient. Augustine here acknowledges no sacrifice happens (although we could say this is the sacrifice of the lord because of a way of speaking) so its very important that he has said that. And that is why i couldnt ever be a catholic. Because offering jesus several times is saying his sacrifice is inneficient. So it pleases me to see augustine didnt thougt the sacrifice was taking place although he could say it was taking place.

I appreciate Latin Mass in that it shows the universality of the Church. If you take part in Masses said in St. Peter's with the Holy Father, people from all over the world take part in the Mass in Latin as a sort of unifying language for all the faithful. Not to mention the beauty of the hymns in the Missa De Angelis. It truly a foretaste of the heaven! As a traditionalist, I completely agree with you. The NO when celebrated in the way it's meant to be, is as much valid as the tridentine mass. However, I do not like the watered down version of the NO. John cantius is great example for this. They celebrate both forms in the way they were meant to be.

@Harry Waddington I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you. The intention of the NO was to make it more accessible to Catholics, not Protestants. It not simply a communal meal, it is a real sacrificial offering of ourselves to God and God's son to us. I will admit that some more liberal litergists have taken a very lax view of the mass and that is more than unfortunate. But that is certainly not true of all, I would even say most, priests. In my 60+ years in the church I have never seen anything other than reverence in both priests and parishoners. It is certainly not "less Catholic". I grew up with Latin mass and I much prefer being able to understand the language of the mass. Having to learn another language simply to worship God smacks of a clique-ish attitude to me. If you prefer Lain, fill your boots. But don't denigrate the NO. It is a fully sanctioned, worshipful, reverent, sacramental and "real" option.

@Harry Waddington well said. Not only are you factually correct, I'm glad you made your comments kindly. I would add is that even though both the NO and TLM have the infinite grace of the Eucharist, the NO even when done reverently and beautifully, by its design it puts most of the attention upon the people and when we are focused upon ourselves we become a more closed to that infinite grace. Also by design the NO makes the Mass about the priest's personal preferences, choosing which prayers to offer and so forth, which further distracts us from the central focus which should be on Christ's Passion and sacrifice. Unfortunately this has made the priests who say the NO think they have to put their personal signature, style, and interpretation on the Mass to meet fashionable tastes and desires and personal preferences of the people. It makes the people think that the Mass should be conformed to what they want, the songs they want, the style they want, what about my feelings, etc. The priests succumbs to the false notion that the Mass should be changed to meet where the people are comfortable and what they want, which is the opposite of what God wants. God wants us to approach Him in humility and confirm ourselves to Him, not to conform God to ourselves. The TLM put all the focus on God and so the people are more open to the infinite grace of the Mass, because they are naturally focused on God instead of themselves. The strip rubrics allow no room for interpretation or personal taste or fashion, and so the priest decreases so Christ may increase. And the people receiving and kneeling on the tongue which is required and not optional, makes them humble themselves before God who has already humbled Himself by becoming bread. I believe the NO, while valid with the true presence of the Eucharist, is what scripture refers to with man replacing God in the temple because it puts the focus on man and not on God. And since the NO takes attention away from God and puts it on the people, it is always illicit. Valid, but illicit by nature and design.

By the way, don't be upset, by I wondered ALSO if the Lord might be calling you to His Holy Priesthood. The Old Covenant Priesthood was very much similar to Christ's New Covenant Priesthood. When their Lamb was slain by the Priest in the Temple in Jerusalem, it seems, that the penitent, was first called to confess first his sin,, whilst putting his hand on the lamb, so that his sin would pass over to the Lamb - then the Temple Priest would kill the Lamb, and grant the penitent forgiveness. During the days of the Old Priesthood in Jerusalem, there were so many Priests, that each Priest was called on a rota to minister in the Temple. Oftentimes, just a brief stint, over a yearly period would be possible. During that period, the Married Priests would vacate their homes, and go to serve The Lord in celibacy lodged in private quarters at the Temple. It was never permitted that Priests were carnally active as they ministered before God. @True Messenger of God well you are getting your information from someone who has poor information. There is no age set on baptism. The Bible doesn’t say to only baptize adults does it? Nope. You see, baptism is about cleansing us from “original sin” and to receive the protection of the hOnly spirit. Original sin is the sin that prevented us from eternal life and that was the sin of Adam and Eve. Protecting our children from the soles of the devil by instilling the Holy Spirit through baptism is a good thing. I don’t see why evangelicals get hung up on it, And when it comes to the rosary... it is all scripture. Luke 1:28 and Luke 1:41-43 is the first half of the rosary prayer. Each ten beads of the rosary hold ten scriptures related to a mystery of Jesus, life death and resurrection and his miracles performed. So today being Friday we pray the sorrowful mysteries which are, the agony in the garden, then the next set of ten are on the scourging at the Pilar, and then the next set of ten are on the crowning with thorns, then the next set of ten, carrying his cross, and finally the last ten, the crucifixion. Each bead has a verse from scripture related to each of those mysteries. Each one is different. We meditate on the scripture. It draws us closer to Christ. The other prayers used are our Apostles Creed, The Our Father, and Hail holy Queen. So by saying it is not based on scripture means you never bothered to research it but took the word of another in your religion that spreads these falsehoods. As far as lighting candles in front of statues... they are always in front of statues, but they aren’t in a birthday cake! Where should we put these symbolic candles? Under the church pew? It will catch fire. We do not pray to statues if that is what you are getting at. Statues within a church are there as visual reminders. To help us meditate or pray to God. If you are concerned about “the Mary thing” this is a very long discussion. But first of all if I started talking smack about your mom would it bother you? If I came into your home and said why do you have a picture of your mom on the mantle you’d think I was nuts right? Because she is your mom. God the father chose her to have his son. Doesn’t this make her the mother of God? She gave him his humanity, and God gave him his divinity. We honor her. She deserves honor, just as you honor your mother. We do not adore her. That is reserved trinity. Father, son and Holy Spirit. We speak to saints. They are alive with Christ. We ask them to pray for us. Who better? We ask people here on earth to pray for us and we aren’t even saints! So why not ask those who have died and gone to their heavenly home? As far as solo scriptura, the a[ostles taught about the traditions of the church that were not in the Bible. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 states, So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. Instead of coming at a Christian and telling us about things you don’t understand in the true church, why not ask nicely rather than coming at me like this? Why such unrighteousness anger? If you are against wrong teachings I’d like to teach you correctly whenever you are ready, because you have been taught the classic misinformation all evangelicals are taught. Read Scott Hahn’s book called Home Sweet Rome. He was an evangelical pastor who became Catholic. He has many degrees including theology and could teach you a lot. Or also I recommend someone right here on YouTibe that has more than 10- videos answering every misinformed statement you make her channel is Lizzie’s Answers. She was also Protestant. As I was. Jesus spoke of different things less often than Mary is spoken of so Mary plays a key role in our salvation. Beginning in Mary at enmity with Satan- Genesis 3:15, then Christ born of a Virgin-Isaiah 7:14, then full of grace before the incarnation, 1: 26-28, Mary sanctifies the greatest man (John the Baptist) while he is still in the womb Luke 1:15, and 1:42, Mary’s blessed fruit 1:41-44, Luke 6:43-44 , Mary is the mother of God Luke 1:43, Mary’s need of a savior Luke 1:47, most blessed woman of all time Luke 1:48, what God has done for her Luke 1:49.Then Mary’s sufferings united with Jesus Luke 2:34-35, Mary’s total obedience to God more important than her motherhood 11:27-28. Then in John Mary’s roll in intercession with Jesus (this is the part where you all say we worship her but this is where we get the prayer to her to intercede for us to her son 2:3-5, Then Mary is our mother John19:26-27 and Revelation 12:17. Mary and Jesus united as one (as are all the saints in heaven) 1Cor 6:17. Then Mary the New Testament ark of the covenant Revelation 11:19-12:1. Mary’s body is in heaven and Mary is queen of heaven Revelation 12:1. Mary still at enmity with Satan Revelation 12:17. So that is what I have found about Mary in the Bible. She plays an important Roll and ought to be respected. We do not worship her!

@True Messenger of God I am trying to respond to your many many statements and there’s. Lot to respond to here...confession of sins to a priest. First we don’t think of him as God but he sits in the chair and Christ hears our sins as we tell the priest. He then counsels us on the sin so that we don’t continue to repeat these sins over and over. But in the Bible since everything you need must be in the Bible.... here goes... Leviticus 19: 20-22: A man who committed adultery had to bring a guilt offering for himself to the door of the tent of meeting (holy place where the ark of the covenant, which contained God’s true presence was kept). But then it adds “And the priest shall make atonement for him …before the Lord for his sin…and the sin which he has committed shall be forgiven.” (see also Leviticus 5: 5-6) The priest could not make atonement if he were not aware of the man's sin. He is acting as a mediator for the repentant sinner. Matthew 3: 6 (and Mk 1: 5): “. . . they were baptized by him [John the Baptist] in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.” So he who prepared the way for Christ, listened to confessions of sin. We learn in Luke's account of the Baptist that he answered many questions for the people concerning the behavior they should follow, but freely confessed that he was not the Christ (Luke 3: 16-17). He doubtless heard countless confessions of sin, but he knew where forgiveness of sin came from for when Jesus approached he declared, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1: 29). Jesus than sent his disciples to baptize throughout Judea (John 3: 22) and they too, doubtless heard the confessions of many sinners as they traveled from village to village. So Jesus used his disciples and John the precursor to hear confessions of sins, but this is not the sacrament of confession, anymore than the baptism of John was the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which came after John the Baptist's time. Let's see if the New Testament shows men receiving the authority to forgive sins in God's name. Matthew 9: 6-8: Jesus tells us that He was given authority on earth to forgive sins (a power reserved to God alone) and proves it with miraculous healings and then Scripture notes this same authority was given to “men” (plural). Is this merely a figure of speech? No, John's Gospel makes it clear Jesus intended to give this sacrament to men: John 20: 21-23: In his very first Resurrection appearance our Lord gives this awesome power to his Apostles with the words: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” How could they forgive sins if they were not confessed? They could not. This authority comes through the gift of the Holy Spirit which precedes it. Does this remind of you what He told Peter (Mt. 16: 19) and then the other apostles (Mt. 18:18)? “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” This includes sins. Jesus allowed for us to receive spiritual consolation and counsel in this beautiful sacrament of the Church. We see this awesome power in other sacraments as well. What today we call the sacrament of the sick. Again, we look to Scripture: James 5: 14-17: "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another …” Notice the command does not say confess your sins straight to God. Notice also who they are to go to the “elders” (bishops or priests-see the Acts 14: 23; 15: 2 for example). 1 John 1: 9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The word confess has an oral/verbal or proclamation meaning. St. Paul describes his ministry as one of reconciliation of sinners: 2 Corinthians 5: 18: “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation . . .”

As someone who attends Tridentine Latin Mass...the appeal to the youth is its stability. It is wholly unchanging, something that had withstood the weathers of time. It is knowing that the Mass you experience is the same one Christians and Saints participated in, down to every prayer, for over a thousand years (with a few minor changes over time). And knowing it connects you to Christians a thousand years after us. In a world that feels so transient these days, I think craving that immovable "sameness" makes perfect sense. To do that, the liturgy must be rooted in what will never change.

Loved this too sooo much! Austin, you are a breath of fresh air and radiate the joy of Christ as much as Fr Joshua. It’s beautiful to see a Protestant such as yourself being so kind-hearted, curious, and non-judgmental, but just being open to learning and listening. There are, sadly, so many judgmental and quick to criticize people in many faiths, Catholics included. We ALL could learn from your example to “love Jesus and love others.” This follow up video was great to see after the grand tour of St John Cantius. I would love to see more videos where you can bring more questions to the table about the tour and different things you saw that I’m sure inspired many questions for you as a Protestant. Also, a Q & A about some of the differences and similarities in our faiths.

I'm not sure if you'll see this since it's a few days after the fact, but I wanted to sort of affirm you. You obviously do not know me or the others commenting here (though perhaps there have been some recurring characters in the comments section!), and I have seen people trying to tell you that you're going to be a priest or become Catholic or telling you you shouldn't become Catholic. You have taken this so graciously and I sincerely want to thank you for that and say how impressed I am with that, because from my experience it is really indescribably frustrating when people who do not know you attempt to tell you how to live your life, especially in your relationship with God. Bias disclosure, I am a Catholic, and I think it'd be pretty neat if you became Catholic, but I don't think it's right to pressure you into that, even if that comes from a good place. You are clearly an incredibly nice and holy man, and I cannot wait to see where God takes you. If you get married, God be praised, if you become a priest, God be praised, if you remain Protestant, God be praised, if you become Catholic, God be praised. No matter where you end up the Spirit will be working through you, and I'm so honored that you're allowing us to come with you on your journey. If I'm ever in your area, I'll be sure to stop by your church. Happy All Saint's Day and God bless!

@@GospelSimplicity stay protestant. Are you really on a journey? I hope not, but some of us get that, and are happy (catholics) or concerned (me). But i will give you some reasons to stay protestant, cause i want you to be saved 1. Bowing to statues is a sin. We can not do this even if it is a statue of the lord himself. Deuteronomy 4:15, isaiah 40:18. And in acts 17, paul says God forgave the sillyness in the past but he will not continue doing it (thinking God can be represented with gold or such (in a statue)) 2. The sacrifice of the mass calls the sacrifice of christ an ineficient one. Hebrews 9-10 ssys when sscrifices are eficient they stop. No need to offer them again. This notion of catholics that they sin and in the eucharist the sin is forgiven is ignoring that christs sscrifice turned away people from sin, it was efficient, so sons of God, dont live in sin, says 1 john 3. And if we sin (this shouldnt be, but could happen, we make a sacrifice our own bodies in obedience, not offer christ again) So consider this, and remember catholics say church farhers say this and that, but many times its not true church farhers say what they say they say. And remember fathers say this sort of things catholics like to mention but they seem to forget protestants can agree with that. Like if ignatius says. The bread is the body - protestants can agree with this. The eucharist is remedy for immortality, - also csn agree (it makes us remember. And that way we dont sin) If iraneus says We dont receve it as common bread - we agree is not common bread Or if augustine says The bread becomes the body at the eucharist - we can agree cause also people BECOME sheep at baptism God bless

I want to thank you for your videos with Fr. Joshua. I saw your tour video first, but before I saw your title I saw St. John Cantius in the background and couldn't have been more excited. I'm from South Bend, Indiana and I try to visit that church when I'm home between semesters. I'm actually in seminary studying to become a Roman Catholic Priest and I find that great dialogues such as this are incredibly helpful for all us who in formation to become priests. I follow Matt on the 10-minute bible hour as well and just love his channel to pieces (though I've been waiting FOREVER for him to finish his video series with the catholic theologian). If it means anything to you, I enjoyed your dialogue with Fr. Joshua so much that I made four other seminarians in my hall watch it. You've put a lot of great work into your channel. I'm glad to have discovered it and can't wait to see more of them in the future.
