@Twisted Coaster Fan Kidney stones? He could've gone before the grand finals started. If I was Light I would've done whatever I could to deny that break, because it's 'not very sportsmanship like to deny a break' but it's ok to not go before a very official appointment is happening between professionals? Proto knows what he's doing, it's a strategy, and you want to know a counter strategy? Deny the break. A ten minute set, 3 - 0 for Light. What's another ten minutes before proto can use the bathroom? You're telling me it's that serious? Its a matter of principle, one person is in his zone and playing the game and your strategy to that is to take him out of it instead of overcoming it? It's so cheesy that everyone HAS to acknowledge him as an Ice man. It's not like it's every other tournament where proto may be hit with the runs, or is feeling the pressure and just needs to go to the bathroom to recollect himself, no its every time he's down a set he needs to go stall. Edit : and IF the kidney stones ARE that serious that mf can't wait 10 minutes to go to the bathroom at a time like this, then he shouldn't be caught drinking a red bull.

Quite pleasantly surprised that most all the comments here are defending and congratulating Proto. After Light took to Twitter and watching the Twitch chat I was worried a lot of others were hopping on the excuses as Light did. Making something huge out of a standard 5 minute break, not to mention Proto's health condition. As well as there only being a few people who came out to see Proto after he won, truly disappointing if you're a smash fan. Much love to Proto and the other Japanese players.

Exactly. Japan has been the best smash region for a while now, but NA is too stubborn to acknowledge them. Partly why Japanese results tend to be inconsistent for even top players is because the floor is much higher. Some thoughts on this: 1. While I also believed that Proto was icing on purpose, he still had plausible deniability that he didn't. As it turns out, he had extremely painful bladder stones multiple times in the past which forces him to drink a ton and go to the bathroom often (usually every hour). 2. Proto won this fair and square, if Light struggles with icing then that's Lights problem, not Protos. Do you think Icing would work on someone like Leo or Dabuz? Most definitely not because they play at their respective levels with consistency. This just means Light has to do what some other top players already did and work on his mental to ensure that he can play at his best at all times, and not just at random moments which are out of his control. He can't expect to not put in this work and still get results. 3. The US scene is generally very toxic but the fact that twitch chat was so antagonistic towards Proto (and international players in general) that the Chat was flooded with enraged Japanese people is impressive. If you manage to somehow piss of the Japanese scene you fucked up massively. I know you'll say "No shit US smash twitch chat is toxic, it's twitch chat" but that just proves my point because twitch chats aren't inherently toxic, you just think they are because the US smash community is a cesspit of proud, USA chanting patriots that spend their free time harassing and even sending r*pe threats to a teenaged Steve main

100% agree. it's not even out of the ordinary for there to be a couple minutes between a grand finals set. he should've just stayed at the setup and focused instead of making excuses on the mic. and the whole chat during any of acola sets is just depressing man. whether you think steve should be banned has nothing to do with the person playing him, they're the ones playing for the pride and money so if it's in the game it's in the game. to say disgusting things about a teen for that sole reason is just so fucking stupid.

That was a super fun set to watch, ggs to both but this is the first time I've seen a Summit winner not get a crowd at the end. I agree that the long Proto breaks in-between come off as a bit rude but the ruling allows for it and Proto did play like a beast. Light also blamed Proto's break for him losing both during the break and afterwards on twitter. *EDIT:* I didn't even know before but Proto apparently has kindey stones, that's why he has to stay hydrated all the time and is reason for the many longer breaks. I know that the majority of people shitting on Proto and making the "iceman" memes don't know that. Now I feel even worse. It feels so sad and disrespectful how there is no crowd, I know that if Light won there would've been the usual gathering of people celebrating the win. I watched Dabuzs stream and he talked about an incident with Proto. Proto apparently told his translator to record a friendly between Dabuz and Riddles (Preparing Riddles for the Min Min matchup) for private studying before bracket (Dabuz said that the translator didn’t want to do it). Someone came up to Dabuz and told him that they were being recorded. Dabuz popped off and was really furious. Dabuz and Riddles were angry that Proto didn’t even ask for permission to record (Dabuz said he wouldn’t have given permission). Dabuz thought it was a grimy tactic. Dabuz and Riddles told the others about it, and the other players were extremely unhappy. He also said that most people wanted to see Light win, but they really didn’t want to see Proto win partly because of the incident. Edit: Riddles said on stream that Proto did apologize right before their set with long English text on his phone. Riddles also said it did put him in a weird mental right before the set.

During the second set, Proto's Min Min was super conditioning Light in time for the Lucina. Thanks to Min Min, Light started to shield a lot more and play a different approach to the game, but then Lucina, who enjoys the opponent shielding a lot more and plays a different game, capitalized on it, and thus executed her gameplan a lot better than during the first set. This is part of why Proto's approach as the master of two different characters is such a hard force to overcome. You may be prepared for one character, but then he switches it up on you, and then when you get a better handle on that, he can switch again.

If the person on winners side (proto) takes the best of 5 the tournament is over and he is the champion. However, if the person on loser’s side wins the set like you just seen Light do, then that is what we call a bracket reset. The person on loser’s side must win twice to take the championship. Its because in order to get beat out of bracket you must lose twice, but Proto hadn’t lost at all until grands so Light had to beat him out twice. Hope that makes sense.

Even if Proto didn't have kidney stones, I'd still love the way he plays the game. I've heard Proto's breaks are because of kidney stones and doctor's recommendations, but I really like the "Iceman" persona for him. Before knowing about his condition, it seemed like a lot of competitive Ultimate fans were giving him grief for simply taking advantage of something explicitly allowed by the rules - taking a short break between games, and a longer break before a grand finals reset. Those situations seem odd because other players don't often do the same, but Proto leverages the rules to his advantage all the time. He switches characters between games so the opponent cannot immediately take advantage of patterns learned in the previous game, and possibly (as suggested by the commentators) switches characters between games to take advantage of the conditioning achieved by a previously used character. The anecdote somewhere in these comments about the situation between Proto and Riddles & Debuz is interesting in this light as well because it paints the picture of Proto being a competitor that will make use of every rule (or lack of rule) to create a more favorable situation for himself to win. It seems like when he's simply around other competitors he starts playing his games of choice: mind games, and Smash Ultimate. There are a lot of valid arguments against these tactics, one being that it compromises the integrity of the tournament. Most people/teams that utilize tactics like this in other sports seem to end up being seen as villainous by fans (e.g. fake punts in American football). But that's what I like about Proto, not only is his game play generally fun to watch because he can perform at such a high level, he also brings drama to the game in a legal way that sparks interesting commentary and challenges the current meta.

First set ended at 11:45. Second set started at 17:28. That's like a 5 minute break in between sets and Light/some people are really crying about it? I've seen tournaments where the bracket is reset and the players or a player take a second to get coached or regroup. I've seen tournaments where they jump right into the next set. Neither should be considered an issue. The notion that the break in-between sets somehow caused Light to lose is ridiculous.

Its only right 2nd and 3rd at the last Summit are in Grands. This is the best Ultimate tournament to date. So many heart wrenching sets in Losers Side, upsets and perfect commentary throughout the day. Huge congrats to Proto winning it with the prettiest Lucina gameplay I've ever seen. He was so dominant and I am so Proud of him proving over Light, Kola, Riddles and beating Sparg0 to a point it reignited his passion for the game once again. Light played phenomenal beating Tweek at peak gameplay, Acola in a nerve wracking Game 5 set and his dominance over Glutonny and Kola. I am so ready for the future of Ultimate. No matter the Steve, MinMin, Kazuya or Aegis complaints I think the meta will be fine for years.

I 100% agree with everything you've said, especially the last paragraph. I'm tired of the "Steve and Kazuya will destroy Smash" garbage. Kazuya has yet to win any majors and Steve is getting figured out the more he's seen in majors. Min Min isn't even the main reason Protobanham won... it was Lucina bringing it home. Difference of familiarity probably. The previous winners (Leo, Tweek, and Spargo) are all people who mostly regularly attend U.S. majors and supermajors, so they hang out alot or interact alot during tournaments. Obviously they're more comfortable celebrating and congratulating more closely with someone they know. Proto on the other hand, like many Japanese players, usually don't show up for any U.S. events that aren't a supermajor. Shuton is more active internationally than him. And also unlike with Europe and Mexico, out-of-region top players rarely attend Japanese majors and supermajors.

Things I got from this tournament: -Tweek and Leo have the best rivalry in eSports. -Proto has refined Zackray’s counterpick meta. -As of now there is no definitive #2 Gluto, Light and acola all are top 3, but it’s too close to tell. You could say Gluto, but his low placements in his region are questionable, or Light, but he still doesn’t have me sold on being a definitive #2 in the world. For acola the lack of more than 1 supermajor win. I’d say Light given the consistency, but that’s just my opinion. -American casters are incredibly biased (watch Tweek, and Light sets), but to be fair all commentators are. This year gives me 2019 vibes, but the top 10 is far more volatile, this tournament was a fantastic indication of that. What a time to be an Ultimate spectator.

A part of the bias comes from the fact these commentators barely watch the game, especially if its outside of the U.S. They end up rambling about American players because they only follow them. They didn't know common things like: -Gluto's tendonitis -Being shocked at Acola's Kazuya -They said they've never seen a Kazuya ditto in bracket, when Tea v. Riddles was hype af and alot of other things that you'd expect people paid to cast the game would know

I feel like japan is kind of region which is to win a major you have to be prepare for defeating protobanham, so everyone in japan rethinking and choosing their character to beat proto, and they just refining their way to beat protos lucina and min-min. so there are kind of different environment for proto in japan. On the other hand, like when proto competing in NA's majors, everyone have to prepare for strongest player in the world like leo, light, gluto, or tweek etc, so for proto environment is kind good for him cause people didn't ready for proto or not so much prepare for proto like japan's environment. so I feel like that's the one of the reasons why proto didn't win a majors in japan so frequently. but like you said that kind results tells us the facts, so let's see proto's continuous challenges in majors.

@@youtubedrama5468 having Gods isnt a bad thing. Melee has had gods for more than a decade and its accomplished crops of generations gunning to be god killers, many of which routinely do. Zain, Cody, Plup, Jmook and more have all taken sets from Mang0 as well as Hbox (the last of the remaining original gods) and melees meta is constantly evolving because of it. Having a top tier league of players gives everyone something to prove and work toward, rather than everyone just feeling deflated by spargo and mkleo taking every tourney
