Its called ferrofluids. Clearly, they behave incredibly in the presence of powerful magnets. Basically it is just some sort of organic solvent or water in which ferromagnetic particles, most commonly iron, but also others including chromium oxide, nickle, and cobalt, are dissolved. Once this has occured, the liquid, or ferrofluid becomes extemely polarized in the presence of magnets- which explains the substances interesting behaviors. Truly fascinating.

I realize these comments are very old but for the record (for anyone interested): ferrofluid is does not contain "ground" up iron filings. These particles are nano-scale. You react ferric chloride with ferrous chloride (FeCl3 and FeCl2) to produce "Magnetite" (Fe3O4). This magnetite is what's suspended in the surfectant (usually kerosene). In the end... unless you're a chemistry major it's better to just buy the fluid. Ferrotec is the main distributor that I know of, I bought 1L from them.

that looks like some kind of futurestic weapon! AWSOME

Thank you for your intelligent input, these comments are from when I was wee little lad. It makes sense that the particles are nano scale, because if they were larger they would likely aglommerate. I did not know that the actual material was magnetite either. And like I've stated before it's about once a year that someone replies to these comments haha.

imagine drinking it, or using it it in a car to make it float in a particular place !

its ferrofluid, its a liquid that reacts to magnetism

Actually I'm happy :) at you suftthenashawn it's not your fault its one of many flaws that exist in reality otherwise we would all be bored out of our minds.

Hmmm in the first one shown do you know the magnet is above or below the ferrofluid?

@RandomGuyNamedSteve haha This is one of the few times I've posted comments on youtube and about every year someone reads this thread and comments. Still cracks me up. Wonder if he has any rebuttal?

Trent Reznor would eat this stuff up for his videos. Dont you think?

Did you know this is also possible with liquid oxygen?

its magnetic water metal.. and a eltromagent -.- im 17 years old and i understand this much more than the maker of this video ..

Simply take some waste oil, put steel shavings in it and you have the elusive "ferrofluid".

actually it's some ferrous material ground up and put in OIL. Even more grinded it would be a gas? No it probably wouldn't have seeing how to go from a solid state to a gas state requires that energy be added to the material. so no, it's not water metal. So if your 17 or maybe 18 now, you should probably go back to high school science.

err... im 21 and i consider myself a genius i know how atom work and I know what Gaseous/liquid/solid form is.. its a trick of the eye and yes it would become gaseous
