The difference is that the term "Redskin" can, and has, been used in a derogatory manner (there is some differing opinions on that) while the mascot for the Cleveland MLB team is simply the name "Indian." I'm sure a case could be made to change that name as well. I think that gets a little too PC for me, though.

Todd Exum It's not the name I have offense with Cleveland's team. It's the actual stylization of their mascot. @908jam10 жыл бұрын
they should change the cleveland indians mascot. if you watched the video, you will notice that one of the first things to come up that they "call themselves" is indian. so that would be WAY too far. the redskins organization is also trying to argue that the word is not a slur. some people may use it as such, but red skin is not a slur, just as white, black, or brown skin is not. combined with the history of the organization, i would be inclined to keep the name as is. but if they really feel that strongly about the name not being about their skin, then how about the washington indians? according to the ad, that would be agreeable.

@Martin Balber Hold on there, you literally just quoted them, then you now state "Native Americans" placing all 500+ tribes into a basket. You'll need to remain fair and state that "those five tribes that settlers called civilized" owned slaves. By saying "Native Americans" there, you're laying claim that ALL people of turtle island (known as Indians of the America's, Native Americans, red man, etc) all held and owned slaves.
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism4 жыл бұрын
@Martin Balber What you are attempting to prove is that all people are imperfect and did some not so honorable things in the past. The difference is, those 5 tribes that held slaves don't have sports named of teams for the black community mocking them with foolish caricatures and black - skins - the N -words or the dark - ies etc.etc. They have long since apologized to the black communities and stand with them today with the issues they face. That's the difference. The same ask by we Indian people is of you. To please drop this foolishness, and stand along side us with our issues, such as all the broken treaties, land theft and the mass killing of our women, the lack of opportunities that have forced living conditions of that of the 3rd world and the list goes on and on and on. We are people. Not mascots. Those 5 tribes don't dress up and put on black face to mock the honorable black community do they? We've all done imperfect things. The difference is, what we can do about it moving forward. Stop the hate. The R-word and the use of our image (mainly that of the plains tribes) for profit and mockery is wrong and studies show it's harmful to our children.

Ronnie for most part is correct. But another reason why owner change name from braves to redskins was due to the ties team had with the redsox of Boston at the time. So owner used a common term/name (redskins) for native Americans at the time (used by both natives and whites) that also had red in its name. Using people or even a people as a mascot is not a sign of disrespect but the opposite, as long as it is done without racial insensitivity, which is why the name "Redskins" is offensive... Calling the mere logo offensive simply because its a depiction of a Native American is tantamount to saying the Sacagawea on the US Dollar coin was racist.

I now live in Toronto where the Premier of the province of Ontario starts every public address by recognizing, with respect, the name of the peoples whose traditional territory is being used for that particular meeting place. In a time when so much is discussed about the wrongful treatment of people in other lands, I observe that there is still so much to be done to transform how we treat each other within our own lands. I am respectful that my family came to Canada in the early 1830s to make a better life for themselves, better than the life that could be had, at that time, in Scotland or France. I also think about what it must have been to arrive and survive those first winters. I am also aware that there was likely no consideration for the impact that made to the people that were already here, peoples who had lived in these lands for thousands of years. I am proud to be descended from explorers and survivors of 180 years of harsh climates. I can only imagine the pride that the descendants of those first nations must feel in their heritage or thousands of years. I love the video and the respect that it calls for. Bravo.

Being from Canada (where we respectfully always refer to our indigenous people as Natives, Native-Canadians, and avoid using the term 'eskimo,' etc.), it baffles me that an ad about the inconsiderate and incorrect use of a derogatory term would call itself the Congress of American Indians. Why have Americans, and Native Americans at that, internalized the completely incorrect use of the term "Indian"? Certainly very few people throw the term "redskin" around (and thankfully so), but why is "Indian" tolerated, and even embraced? Someone please explain this to me.

The native American logo for the team was designed by Walter Wetzel in 1972. He was a native American, a Blackfeet tribal chairman, and a former president of the National Congress of American Indians. The logo that he designed got approved by a council of elderly native Americans. A lot of native Americans support the logo and the name. I've seen interviews on KZbin and supporters on Reddit posts. A lot of native Americans seem to like it.

WTF has that got to do with racism? If anything it is born out of ignorance, as you pointed out, of the history of the region. There is nothing racist about it. That would be equivalent of someone from San Francisco calling someone who uses the word Frisco when referring to the city racist because he doesn't like the name the person's using. Give me a break FFS and lose the chips on your shoulders...

Here are my two cents: Pretty interesting commercial. I don't think the mascot itself is offensive, but the name CERTAINLY is. I don't understand how people can't clearly see when something is offensive, and why white people are so against changing things that are offensive. It's like the chief dance at U of I (one of my alma maters)... A white guy with Indian paint doing high leg kicks is not being respectful to Indians. I don't care how serious the individual is taking it. I think, and agree, we are getting WAY too politically correct these days, but some things are undoubtedly too much. And "redskins" is a little much... It's like calling a team the "negroes," "slanteyes," or even "whities." There would be outrage in every one of those circumstances. So how is it any different in this case? I don't care what the motivation is from any side, the fact is, it's wrong.
@seanburns523310 жыл бұрын
how can the name be "certainly" offensive, the the mascot not be? the mascot/logo is referred to as a redskin.
@jpainte10 жыл бұрын
sean burns exactly - you are looking at what it is being "referred to as" a/k/a the NAME. The logo, IN AND OF ITSELF, is not offensive - it is simply a picture of an Indian. The name is what makes it offensive...

Frances Rumbletart This 'phony issue' is a result of a very real issue, the one you're so passionately reminding us of. There's literally no logical reason not to raise awareness about the many facets of the issue, the many faces of racism. This kind of 'subtle' injustice is what embeds itself into the minds of our people and our youth and makes it easier for them to accept the injustices on their reservations and in their homes. This is merely a piece to a larger puzzle. There will always be non-ethnic people who simply watch this and feel good for watching it. Share it and feel like they've done their job. But for every ten who stop there, a few will remember in the voting booths, in the streets when they see the injustice thrust in their faces. We shouldn't ignore or avoid messages as seemingly small as these because they don't fix a problem so much bigger than most of us feel capable of conquering. It's a part of the battle, you have to learn how to work the system. If the best you can hope for out of some people is to share this a dozen times so someone who actually has a soul does something more, then you go for it. You sadly cannot force everyone to change. It is worth it to hope for any influence, however small. The more things like this are brought up, the more people will be receptive to larger, more important messages.

Seana McDuffie I view this video and this mascot issue as a way for the Native American community to bring their more serious issues to the forefront. The whole video was showcasing their lives and only at the end was the mascot mentioned. The mascot, in a way, is representing not only a football team, but the very modern plight of the Native People. They have been struggling and fighting for a better life since they were removed from their homes, and they continue to do so to this day. And only until they started fighting against a team mascot, was the conversation created on a larger scale.
@martyc90910 жыл бұрын
Seana McDuffie Really, because if I remember correctly the name was actually created by George Preston Marshall to recognize his coach,William Henry Dietz, Native American heritage. The problem was Dietz was not Native American, and only claimed to be so that he could avoid going to World War I. But the Redskins were once named the Braves, which also was a Native American name. Also, in terms of Native population opinions. Most polls done on reservations have found that a majority of Native Americans find the name offensive. I myself have Native blood, over 50% according to a test done on our family. BUT, we did not live in a reservation, even though I spent a lot of time there during my childhood. But many Native Americans who live on a reservation have opinions of those who claim to have "Native blood" and have never lived there. So it's very hard to say I have Native blood, because when I talk to people online and they talk about how their grandma is Cherokee, you click on their Facebook page and they are blond haired and blue eyed. We should be polling those on a reservation, and those polls generally say that most that live on reservations find the name offensive. Now if you also ask them how much they care, it's also low because they have more pressing issues. But this is still something that can be changed and should be changed.
@ScruffDuff10 жыл бұрын
martyc909 I didn't say team name I said logo
@ChannelHMC10 жыл бұрын
What I was trying to say was, that the mascot is not the actual issue. It is just the platform they are using to bring the REAL issues and problems that Native Peoples continue to face to the forefront. They have always been fighting to bring awareness and change for themselves and it never got any genuine air time on national media sources.....until now. Until they started fighting against this NFL team. It seems to be a tactic that is doing a good job at bringing the Native Americans problems to the main stream. People across the board are talking about it. Regardless if they watch football or not. The mascot is not the actual issue for them, it is just, like I said, the platform to get peoples attention. Now they have it, they are starting to talk about the poverty and other problems that are plaguing the Native Americans. This whole commerical was about the people. About the lives of these beautiful people. Not about the mascot. They threw it in there at the end because...well that is the what is bringing about the attention.
@martyc90910 жыл бұрын
Seana McDuffie I have actually argued that the imagery the Redskins use is actually not bad. It's the name. Now Cleveland Indians, that's just wrong on all levels. But if the Redskins were still the Braves, I wouldn't complain at all, because naming a team Braves would be like calling a team Knighs. But the name itself has to go.

@Old Luke First, please don't confused the Spanish word for the N-word. "Negro" in Spanish is NOT the N-Word (the one with the hard R). The US took the Spanish word and perverted it mainly back in the Civil Rights days. Second, you fall into this idea that because Natives had Battling tribes that it's OK to call then a derogatory term, it's not. Tribes had their wars just like every single civilization in human history. It doesn't gave permission to use this word just because tribes were in battle with other tribes. That would be like me, as a Latino American, you called have a team called "The Spicks" and tell me that's it's OK and not derogatory because my people used it to kill each other in past wars. Really? That makes no sense.

What hurts me is being stereotyped as a drunk, or failure to society simply for being Native American. We have so much bigger issues than a football's team name. High rates of suicides, poverty, domestic abuse .. So on and so forth. What is our next big step... How are we as native Americans going to shape our children's future .. Are we using fighting the "redskin" name as a platform for future changes? Is this the start? If so I agree. Once and if We win this name change, I pray we can work on our internal problems as well. TeamHOY Not particularly. As far as I'm aware, American Indian has about as much widespread use as Native American, even among those it's describing. Heck, this video also used it. "Cleveland Indians" isn't racist as a name per se, though God knows the mascot is. "Atlanta Braves" isn't inherently but it suggests a stereotype that's pretty bad, as does the god-awful "tomahawk chop" their fans do. At least they got rid of the Screaming Indian Head logo. "Washington Redskins" has absolutely no excuse. What might be a good route for all three teams to take is to follow the example of FSU's Seminoles--take on the name and aspects of a specific tribe local or important to the area, making sure to consult with them and get their permission, and giving them a cut of the profits from the use of the name. That seems to have worked pretty well for the Seminoles so far, though not everyone agrees. It at least shows more decency and awareness than Dan Snyder is right now.

With the *sole* exception of Florida State (which has been backed repeatedly by the Seminoles of Florida), this applies to *all* mascots that try to make a mockery of other peoples. NFL: Washington, Kansas City MLB: Atlanta, Cleveland NHL: Chicago EPL: Tottenham and so many colleges and high schools that I can’t list them all. (points to the people of North Dakota, though, for finally voting overwhelmingly to drop UND’s offensive nickname/logo/mascot a few years ago). Indigenous tribes are to North America as Jews are to Europe and the Middle East - persecuted, belittled, mocked, made fun of, and ignored (except when they try to stand up for themselves, can’t have that can they?). How can I call myself Jewish and not see what’s being done here in the U.S. and feel the same as I would if this was 70 years ago in Germany?

But where did the word "redskin" come from? Many dictionaries and history books say the term came about in reference to the Beothuk tribe of what is now Newfoundland, Canada. The Beothuk were said to paint their bodies with red ochre, leading white settlers to refer to them as "red men."
