Considering everything they have gone through as a people I don't think it's too much to ask for washington to have a new mascot. While their at it they should change Cleveland's baseball team too.
@toddexum989310 жыл бұрын
The difference is that the term "Redskin" can, and has, been used in a derogatory manner (there is some differing opinions on that) while the mascot for the Cleveland MLB team is simply the name "Indian." I'm sure a case could be made to change that name as well. I think that gets a little too PC for me, though.
@amberck98210 жыл бұрын
Todd Exum It's not the name I have offense with Cleveland's team. It's the actual stylization of their mascot. Similar to a Black Sambo motif that we wouldn't dare to use anymore because of how insulting it is. It's high time we check our privilege and treat all people with respect and dignity and not make race a punchline.
@908jam10 жыл бұрын
they should change the cleveland indians mascot. if you watched the video, you will notice that one of the first things to come up that they "call themselves" is indian. so that would be WAY too far. the redskins organization is also trying to argue that the word is not a slur. some people may use it as such, but red skin is not a slur, just as white, black, or brown skin is not. combined with the history of the organization, i would be inclined to keep the name as is. but if they really feel that strongly about the name not being about their skin, then how about the washington indians? according to the ad, that would be agreeable.

The toing and froing of a name change has been an ongoing legal battle for at least over 40 years. Those were real people so unless you're as offended by those team mascots as you are by this one, I'm calling blatant hypocrisy on that one. Using people or even a people as a mascot is not a sign of disrespect but the opposite, as long as it is done without racial insensitivity, which is why the name "Redskins" is offensive... Calling the mere logo offensive simply because its a depiction of a Native American is tantamount to saying the Sacagawea on the US Dollar coin was racist.

Frances Rumbletart This 'phony issue' is a result of a very real issue, the one you're so passionately reminding us of. There's literally no logical reason not to raise awareness about the many facets of the issue, the many faces of racism. This kind of 'subtle' injustice is what embeds itself into the minds of our people and our youth and makes it easier for them to accept the injustices on their reservations and in their homes. This is merely a piece to a larger puzzle. There will always be non-ethnic people who simply watch this and feel good for watching it. Share it and feel like they've done their job. But for every ten who stop there, a few will remember in the voting booths, in the streets when they see the injustice thrust in their faces. We shouldn't ignore or avoid messages as seemingly small as these because they don't fix a problem so much bigger than most of us feel capable of conquering. It's a part of the battle, you have to learn how to work the system. If the best you can hope for out of some people is to share this a dozen times so someone who actually has a soul does something more, then you go for it. You sadly cannot force everyone to change. It is worth it to hope for any influence, however small. The more things like this are brought up, the more people will be receptive to larger, more important messages.

Seana McDuffie I view this video and this mascot issue as a way for the Native American community to bring their more serious issues to the forefront. The whole video was showcasing their lives and only at the end was the mascot mentioned. The mascot, in a way, is representing not only a football team, but the very modern plight of the Native People. They have been struggling and fighting for a better life since they were removed from their homes, and they continue to do so to this day. And only until they started fighting against a team mascot, was the conversation created on a larger scale.

The problem was Dietz was not Native American, and only claimed to be so that he could avoid going to World War I. But the Redskins were once named the Braves, which also was a Native American name. Also, in terms of Native population opinions. Most polls done on reservations have found that a majority of Native Americans find the name offensive. I myself have Native blood, over 50% according to a test done on our family. BUT, we did not live in a reservation, even though I spent a lot of time there during my childhood. But many Native Americans who live on a reservation have opinions of those who claim to have "Native blood" and have never lived there. So it's very hard to say I have Native blood, because when I talk to people online and they talk about how their grandma is Cherokee, you click on their Facebook page and they are blond haired and blue eyed. We should be polling those on a reservation, and those polls generally say that most that live on reservations find the name offensive. Now if you also ask them how much they care, it's also low because they have more pressing issues. But this is still something that can be changed and should be changed.

What I was trying to say was, that the mascot is not the actual issue. It is just the platform they are using to bring the REAL issues and problems that Native Peoples continue to face to the forefront. They have always been fighting to bring awareness and change for themselves and it never got any genuine air time on national media sources.....until now. Until they started fighting against this NFL team. It seems to be a tactic that is doing a good job at bringing the Native Americans problems to the main stream. People across the board are talking about it. Regardless if they watch football or not. The mascot is not the actual issue for them, it is just, like I said, the platform to get peoples attention. Now they have it, they are starting to talk about the poverty and other problems that are plaguing the Native Americans. This whole commerical was about the people. About the lives of these beautiful people. Not about the mascot. They threw it in there at the end because...well that is the what is bringing about the attention.

Seana McDuffie I have actually argued that the imagery the Redskins use is actually not bad. It's the name. Now Cleveland Indians, that's just wrong on all levels. But if the Redskins were still the Braves, I wouldn't complain at all, because naming a team Braves would be like calling a team Knighs. But the name itself has to go.

Being from Canada (where we respectfully always refer to our indigenous people as Natives, Native-Canadians, and avoid using the term 'eskimo,' etc.), it baffles me that an ad about the inconsiderate and incorrect use of a derogatory term would call itself the Congress of American Indians. Why have Americans, and Native Americans at that, internalized the completely incorrect use of the term "Indian"? Certainly very few people throw the term "redskin" around (and thankfully so), but why is "Indian" tolerated, and even embraced? Someone please explain this to me.

Wow. I found this quite interesting....I was NOT expecting that last part at all. A few years back, there was much controversy over my high school's team logo and mascot. The name of our football team was (and still is, I believe) The Red Raiders. Our logo used to be the caricature of an American Indian, but they changed it to something else and our mascot changed to a pirate. The name "Red Raiders" stuck, though. I'm sure that the NFL and the Washington Red Skins franchise aren't using their team name to try and degrade or hurt the Native American population, but its clear that people are still being offended. I don't see what the problem is of changing the name.

I am an Irishman who has a great grandmother on my mother's side who was probably raped by some drunken sod buster so I am about one eighth Sauk. Ma was blessed with a couple of features of this heritage, perfect teeth (Something that did not come from her Irish heritage I assure you.) And the most beautiful raven black hair. She grew it long, waist length at least and as a child I loved to watch her comb it. I thought then and still do, that it was the most beautiful hair I ever saw. She was also very ashamed of her Sauk ancestry, something I could never quite understand but even in her nineties she was reluctant to discuss it. I have always admired the people of the First Nation and studied their history, losing the idealistic nonsense and learning about the real people, warts and all and found much to admire. Because of this I was disgusted by the name of Washington's football team before I ever learned of my heritage and when I moved to a small town who called the high school team by the same ugly word, I wrote a few letters and had some rather heated debates. To my surprise, the town mostly agreed and changed their name to the Titans, bless their hearts. My mom's shame, brought on by the racism she encountered as a child bothered me a great deal. That and my shame for what the Anglos had done to the Native Americans further stiffened my disgust with Washington. It all gets a bit confusing when I try to get this straight in my own mind but the bottom line is that I am rooting for our brothers and sisters of native heritage and will do what I can to educate my fellow Anglos and get that vile name erased from our sports teams.Best regards.

@Martin Balber Hold on there, you literally just quoted them, then you now state "Native Americans" placing all 500+ tribes into a basket. You'll need to remain fair and state that "those five tribes that settlers called civilized" owned slaves. By saying "Native Americans" there, you're laying claim that ALL people of turtle island (known as Indians of the America's, Native Americans, red man, etc) all held and owned slaves.
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism4 жыл бұрын
@Martin Balber What you are attempting to prove is that all people are imperfect and did some not so honorable things in the past. The difference is, those 5 tribes that held slaves don't have sports named of teams for the black community mocking them with foolish caricatures and black - skins - the N -words or the dark - ies etc.etc. They have long since apologized to the black communities and stand with them today with the issues they face. That's the difference. The same ask by we Indian people is of you. To please drop this foolishness, and stand along side us with our issues, such as all the broken treaties, land theft and the mass killing of our women, the lack of opportunities that have forced living conditions of that of the 3rd world and the list goes on and on and on. We are people. Not mascots. Those 5 tribes don't dress up and put on black face to mock the honorable black community do they? We've all done imperfect things. The difference is, what we can do about it moving forward. Stop the hate. The R-word and the use of our image (mainly that of the plains tribes) for profit and mockery is wrong and studies show it's harmful to our children.

Ronnie for most part is correct. But another reason why owner change name from braves to redskins was due to the ties team had with the redsox of Boston at the time. So owner used a common term/name (redskins) for native Americans at the time (used by both natives and whites) that also had red in its name. A lot of native teams that had all native or above normal amount on the team named themselves such things as Indians, chiefs, braves, and redskins.

Here are my two cents: Pretty interesting commercial. I don't think the mascot itself is offensive, but the name CERTAINLY is. I don't understand how people can't clearly see when something is offensive, and why white people are so against changing things that are offensive. It's like the chief dance at U of I (one of my alma maters)... A white guy with Indian paint doing high leg kicks is not being respectful to Indians. I don't care how serious the individual is taking it. I think, and agree, we are getting WAY too politically correct these days, but some things are undoubtedly too much. And "redskins" is a little much... It's like calling a team the "negroes," "slanteyes," or even "whities." There would be outrage in every one of those circumstances. So how is it any different in this case? I don't care what the motivation is from any side, the fact is, it's wrong.

My father is of northern Ontario French ancestry, my mother of southern Ontario Scottish ancestry. I now live in Toronto where the Premier of the province of Ontario starts every public address by recognizing, with respect, the name of the peoples whose traditional territory is being used for that particular meeting place. In a time when so much is discussed about the wrongful treatment of people in other lands, I observe that there is still so much to be done to transform how we treat each other within our own lands. I am respectful that my family came to Canada in the early 1830s to make a better life for themselves, better than the life that could be had, at that time, in Scotland or France. I also think about what it must have been to arrive and survive those first winters. I am also aware that there was likely no consideration for the impact that made to the people that were already here, peoples who had lived in these lands for thousands of years. I am proud to be descended from explorers and survivors of 180 years of harsh climates. I can only imagine the pride that the descendants of those first nations must feel in their heritage or thousands of years. I love the video and the respect that it calls for. Bravo.

High rates of suicides, poverty, domestic abuse .. So on and so forth. What is our next big step... How are we as native Americans going to shape our children's future .. BS. The most recent and final rendition redskin logo was designed by a NA 1972 version was proposed by Walter Wetzel, who led Blackfoot Confederacy and was done with the blessing of NAs at the time The very term Redskin was first used by the Native Americans themselves. Documents from the colonial period indicate that the use of "red" as an identifier by Native Americans for themselves emerged in the context of Indian-European diplomacy in the southeastern region of North America, before later being adopted by Europeans and becoming a generic label for all Native Americans. A paper written by Ives Goddard, a Smithsonian Institution senior linguist and curator emeritus, who asserts that the term was a direct translation of words used by Native Americans to refer to themselves and was benign in its original meaning. Lastly you are foolish in your efforts to remove these names and mascots. What you should have done is embrace them and use them as a tool to draw attention to the plight of NAs. Instead with the names being changed. You will become more out of sight,out of mind than you already are. As for your destiny. i too am a student of history. Your land wasnt stolen. It was lost. Most frequently as the result of lost wars which if you loot at the map of the globe you find very few borders that arent the result of sides winning and losing wars. Wars you yourselves took part in many many millennia before the Europeans arrival. And you know what you did? You won and lost wars and took each others lands. In this case you happen to be on the loosing end just like every other people have been throughout time. Few defeated people every portray themselves as anything but victims. Japan even today portrays themselves as such in their classrooms. Had the Europeans lost those wars almost 200 years ago. Would your ancestors treatment of the Europeans been and different, or better than how you were treated? History of the battles the Native Americans won say likely not. Your history isnt that of a totally innocent, peace loving people who smoked weed out of peace pipes while dancing around campfires holding hands singing kumbaya as you like to portray yourselves as well as todays movies. Your ancestors were humans, people like any other all over the world. with good, bad and inbetween. And they knew how to be every bit as unhippylike and brutal as any other be it in competing with other native American peoples for land and resources or European invaders. Yes, you were invaded. You fought that/those war/s. Unfortunately in war there are winners, and losers. Your peoples in this case happened to be on the losing end. Perhaps at one time the term Redskins and for that matter "Braves" was used as and in a derogatory manner. But being used as a mascot name for a team is definitely not intended to be insulting but rather a recognition of how skilled you are/were in battle. These names are used as an honor. Not an insult. You re merely choosing to be insulted. Yes being insulted and offended regardless of what name or word is applied to someone is a choice. You choose to be insulted. Look t the other mascots which names are derived from historical peoples. The "Trojans", the "Vikings" , "The fighting Irish, Ottawa Senators (whos team logo shows a Roman General. which would have made him a member of the Roman Senate), The Argonauts which comes from an ancient tale sung of the strongest and bravest band of heroes ever assembled in Greek Mythology. To claim that the use of such names is an insult is absurd and the only thing insulting about it is the complaints of their use. They insult the intelligence of any rational thinking person
