As a black American, I'm with you. Our ancestors shed blood, sweat, and tears for this land so we deserve to appreciated and celebrated just as much as white people. The problems in our communities are problems that they've created. Poverty doesn't just erase itself, it can survive generation after generation if nothing is done to help solve it

Olivia - lol that's classic liberal expediency! Every culture is 'racist' to a degree. Indian (ie. in India...before some of you misunderstand the reference & take offence at the term 'Indian') society is even based on ethnic prejudice. It's just that as white people, we are not allowed to 'punch down' (in a 'traditional power' sense...before some of you take offence at that too :D) due to PC culture; it's okay to be racist upwardly though! God! Expressing one's opinion is a veritable left-wing minefield :P
@julietfischer5056
@julietfischer5056 6 жыл бұрын
Did you just agree with a racist douchebag who called Native Americans substance abusers? Native Americans try to cope with being shit on by our society. Some make the unfortunate choice of alcohol, drugs, or whatever the hell the point of huffing is. Most of them navigate and struggle with systems and issues that a just and fair society would never have imposed on them.
@julietfischer5056
@julietfischer5056 6 жыл бұрын
Every culture defines itself in certain ways. Some of those ways include rejecting entire groups of people for purported inferiority (social, moral, or intellectual) or deviation from the (culturally determined) norm. Much humor involves punching up. It's a defense mechanism. It's how we deal with an uncertain life and those in power. It keeps us from screaming. Other humor punches sideways. That's why comedians poke fun at their own groups: their intimate knowledge lets them comment on the absurd parts of their group's culture. As for punching down: what is funny about degrading and insulting those who lack power? It's saying "I resent you for existing" or "You are so abnormal that we must defend the group from you" or "I assert my power over you so my friends won't mock me as weak."

At my school (in the uk) we’ve been learning about the native Americans and I just wanted to say, that I feel so sorry for everything that their ancestors have gone through. Recently we just finished learning about the Wounded Knee Massacre and it actually sickens me to think what happend that day. How disgustingly the US army and settlers treated them. How they destroyed their buffalo, stole their sacred land and slaughtered their women children and elderly. I’m so sorry for what has happened, And the irreversible damage that was caused.

Mark CANNING yeah, my grandparents are Irish so they’ve told me parts of Irelands history. I think its horrible what was allowed to happen there, and I can’t believe that prejudice towards the Irish still happens today. Just recently, a sentimental Gaelic farewell wasn’t allowed on a ladies gravestone as it was deemed ‘too political’. We think we’ve changed as a society, but prejudice is still deep rooted. It’s rly sad (also sorry for this long reply haha)

I think one of the most important things that they didn't even really reference is the fact that prior to colonizers Native Americans were a diverse, culturally advanced population. The sad thing about our society is most people know very little about Native Americans I am a Black man, a minority but I chose at a very young age to meet and learn about the first Americans. I met a Navajo Native in the Marine Corp, visited the Navajo Nation Fair.and went to a family a Native American Choctaw store front church in the late sixties early seventies. Many people only see the negative such as alcoholism and living in the Rez.

My response to each statement: "Native Americans still live in tipis." First of all, not all tribes even used tipi's but a majority of plains tribes did like the ones I come from and no, that era of living has ended around the late 1800's, early 1900's I believe. "Native Americans get lots of handouts." This is a widespread belief amongst a lot of non-natives. Even if they did, it might've been because the government made treaties where they promised direct help in exchange for land in the past but as we all know, most treaties are not even practiced or respected. "Native Americans don't pay taxes. lol I'm Native and only 21 and I pay taxes. If you're Native and live and work on the reservation you are exempt from state tax I believe but you are still subject to federal tax but if you are native and work off the reservation then you are still subject to state and federal. It might have to be due to the fact that reservations are considered "sovereign." I'm not completely sure. "Native Americans are rich off of casinos." Some native tribes have gained a lot of financial prosperity from casinos but that is a small number of tribes who have and those tribes usually have strict enrollment qualifications and sometimes low enrollment so even that is a low percentage of natives. I know damn well my tribes are not rich off of our casinos. lol "All native Americans wore headdresses." Not all tribes do wear headdresses and not every tribes headdress were alike. Also there were different kinds of headdresses as well. My tribe wore headdresses but like they stated, only certain people are allowed to wear them. "Another word for Native Americans is redskin." There's no word like that in our language. I never have once heard someone within our own people call ourselves redskin. I personally don't like the term either. I personally would rather be called by my tribe. I have been asked these types of questions before and thankfully, the non-natives who ask are always willing to listen and try to understand. I have been asked so many crazy questions on "being native" as well, it is crazy. lol

Another misconception, all Native Americans are dark featured... I'm a quarter Cherokee Indian and my husband is half. We have a brown haired, olive skinned, brown eyed daughter. We have a blonde haired, olive skinned, brown eyed daughter and we have a dark blonde-light brown haired, blue eyed, pale skinned daughter. All three have the same mom and dad. People only believe our oldest is Native. I wish people understood genetics better. Coloring doesn't mean anything.

@@HatredInTheFlesh it doesn't change the fact that they have Native blood, though. I'm a mixed child myself and the *most* irritating thing is when people automatically assume I'm white: by doing that, they are ignoring my heritage and my culture, and simply labelling my race based on my appearance. I imagine the original commenter's children have had the same thing happen to them, and it sucks (edit: for the record, I want to clarify that I'm not half-Native, I'm half-Asian, so if I've said anything out of line I apologise!)

I'm not trying to offend but I don't think you count as a good representation of what Native Americans look like, I myself am Jamaican and am 1/4 English but I can't say a misconception about white people is that they all have pale skin and I don't. I don't have pale skin because I am mostly jamaican. You don't have stereotypical native american skin because you are only 1/4 as I am 1/4 white. I am therefore not a good representation of what an English person looks like. But yes I do agree, we all look different no matter our ethnicity. For example, there are light skinned black people who are fully black and even have blonde or ginger hair as many of my family members do. I think it's disgusting the injustices we all face because of our skin colour and people telling us we can't be a certain ethnicity because of our skin tone

skeetileedeet allonyoface obviously these girls have been “politicised.” That comment she made about DT was unnecessary and untrue, but we do pay taxes, unless you live on a reserve in Canada. I am Inuit. We pay taxes. There are 6 Inuit regions across the circumpolar region of the world. I am part of the Inuvialuit region. We pay our taxes, which I would prefer over living on a reserve where PERHAPS you wouldn't have to pay taxes. (I don't actually know. I've never lived on one.) My understanding is that some reserves don't even have clean drinking water. Consider the following link: www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/manitoba/bad-water-third-world-conditions-on-first-nations-in-canada-1.3269500 I think that the way in which the Inuit in the North have set up their agreements seem to be much more practical than that of the reserves, which are set up in the south. It's not working. The people are segregated from society. They've really become easy targets for eugenicists to do their tests, experiments, etc. Anyhow, that's kind of beside the point.

Lomp15 No clue as to why you felt the need to disrespect another group of human-beings. That is pure arrogance, mate. You seem like the casual European descendant. Let's trace back your history, shall we? European history; Indo-European sub-species (White-man) found it's way out of the Caucus Mountains (Hence the name "Caucasian,") and was taught by the indigenous tribes of Eurasia (Europe/Asia). After being taught and accepted by other humans, the Caucasian man betrayed and conquered with tactics and tools given to them. Nothing but disease and havoc came from this sub-species. All your ancestors have done, is wonder around the world in numbers (Because we all know these regressive fucks reproduced quickly, yet they call other sub-species by the term "Roach,") and spread sexually transmitted diseases that arose only from your blood-type and regressed DNA. Your ancestors were so filthy, African tribes had to teach them how to bathe because they were covered in fecal matter. Laughable, isn't it? Your ancestors tried colonizing the Americas, which were already colonized by indigenous people who welcomed your ancestors. Your ancestors did nothing but steal food, hunting tactics which they failed at, and spread diseases that killed off large chunks of the indigenous population. Your ancestors had diseases that caused the skin of a man to fall off, head to toe, yet you ridicule the indigenous people for "Scalping." Guess who they scalped? Your ancestors.

Or maybe the land belongs to all US citizens instead of just assigning it to one specific race because "they were here first". I don't think we should encourage assigning land to one specific race, that can get scary fast. It belongs to the people that live here, who have lived here for generations. It is as much as Europeans land as a Native, or an Asian or any other, I'll say new immigrants are new, but once someone has lived here for at least a few generations and are citizens, this land is their lands as much as any other citizen.
