What if someone told you that all it takes to teach kids a whole host of crucial life skills is a little...ballroom dancing? Tatiana Lingos-Webb has spent years getting 10-year-olds to tango with their classmates, and her work reinforces the growing consensus that social and emotional intelligence plays a major role in children's academic outcomes and life success. She argues that if you want to change a school, engage a classroom, and turn out gritty, socially mature, high-achieving students, you should spend some time "teaching to the steps" instead of just "teaching to the test".
Tatiana Lingos-Webb is the founder of Dancing Classrooms New England, a social and emotional learning program for 5th graders that brings mandatory lessons in ballroom dance to public school classrooms.

Can't believe this only has 10 comments, such an under appreciated talk. Fascinating and touching.

I would love for my school district to adopt a program like this. I trust it would be worth the results, though they wouldn't see the purpose since it's not related to testing.

How could this ballroom dancing work in a foster agency in which kids were violated?

Actually, as someone who has taken dance class and has dealt with those who have had some baggage like that, it is nice, because the 1st thing taught is permission to dance/touch and that things should NOT be icky or make you feel uncomfortable. The 1st thing that happens when you take a dance class IS consent and the okay to say no if you'd prefer. It is kinda empowering. Treat women like ladies, treat men like they can handle a simple rejection/no. It is amazing what putting things in a different light can do.
