Sexual assault is a public health issue that affects every community - disproportionately though, it affects people of color, indigenous groups, and LGBTQ+ people. The Univeristy of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's School of Nursing launched its STARs program to bring Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) to the communities who need it most. By offering nursing students robust training in forensic skills as well as in identifying social determinants, STARs looks to mobilize highly trained nurses across Wisconsin, and call much deserved attention to an often overlooked public health issue.
