Kırıkkale, which is located in the Central Kızılırmak Section of the Central Anatolian Region, is adjacent to Çorum and Yozgat in the east, Kırşehir in the south, Ankara in the west and Çankırı in the north.
There is no certain information about where the city got its name. It is said to have emerged from the shortening of Kırıkköy and Kaletepe located in the center of the city. Although it is widely believed that this name is ascribed to it by the people, the name of the region is mentioned as "Kırıkkal" in Ottoman archive documents. While Kırıkkale was a district of Ankara, the capital city before 1989, it became a province with a ceremony held by the then Prime Minister Turgut Özal in accordance with the law numbered 3578 on 21 June 1989.
Kırıkkale, one of the important industrial centers of the Republic of Turkey, is the lifeblood of defense and petro-chemical industry activities with its important industrial establishments. Factors such as laying the foundations of the Ammunition Factory in the 1920s and DDY passing through played an important role in the formation of the city.
