Sir I have 1 doubt. In the last example the bad debts were 45000, and the opening provision is 18000 which is not covering the entire bad debts. My doubt is, shouldn't we credit only 18000 of provision for doubtful debts in the bad debts account and the remaining to p & l ? If the current bad debts is not coverd by previous provision we will debit the excess bad debts to p & l right ?

We made provision when there is increase in liability or decrease in the value of assets in both cases it shows credit.. Here debtors are assets so its value expected to decrease in future.. If Assets increase debit balance If assets decrease credit balance If liability increase credit balance If liability decrease debit balance

If the old provision for doubte full debets over than bad debts and further bad debts .Then, what do?

If actual bad debts in next year ( 2019 ) is more than the provision created in the previous year ( Balance sheet for end of 2018 ) , then the extra amount is shown as new bad debt in the next year's Income statement ( 2019 ) On the other hand, if actual bad debts in 2019 is equal to or less than the provision created by end of 2018 , then in that case, no bad debts will be reflected in the Income statement of 2019. Because we have already created provision for the due amount which we feel won't be recovered in 2019 . Here , provision and debtors amount gets reduced by the actual amount of bad debts.
