I would not say I have ever be shocked by art but I took an art history class in college (because I had to) and that really changed my thinking about art. My eyes were opened to whole new world that I found exciting and after the class, I was able to identify all sorts of artwork in films and TV. My husband and I also fit in a museum or two when we travel internationally, which I never would have wanted to do before I took the class. Thank you for showing us a full spectrum of artwork from around the globe!

I enjoy walking through a museum and admiring the art. I have watched many coloring videos, watercolor, etc. attempting to dabble in art. The diamond painting has opened an opportunity to acquire some beautiful art pieces in a different format. Many of us now have more art than we can possible hang up with the diamond paintings. 😉. Thank you, Jessica, for making these videos sharing these old art pieces.

Since this is your last video for the event I first want to thank you for all the hard work. This event is both fun and educational and I hope it comes back again next year. Now on a time when I was moved by the painting. I have to say my very first visit to national gallery of art . Just to see all the beauty and mastery all at once in one building was overwhelming. These where paintings I’ve seen photos of for years. But to see them in person was something else. This was just a few weeks after my first visit to the US (18 years ago) tucked in a corner of one of the galleries, on its own, was a Van Gogh. It was one of his field paintings. It moved me. I could see how 3D it looked in person. I don’t know if it was long hours of walking and the whole day’s experience but I swear I could almost hear the wind running through the field.

I've loved art for as long as I can remember. I used to draw when I was younger but didn't pursue it. When I was in high school I loved going to The Getty and even did a report on the museum. I haven't ever really been into "shocking" art but I can appreciate it anyway.

SWTM is what changed my view of this type of art. I've seen a couple of paintings from this time period but never paid any attention to how beautiful and filled full of emotion this art was. Then when I entered SWTM 2022 and started looking for a painting to do that's when I realized how beautiful these paintings are. The colors the emotion and the detail are awesome so much so that I ended up buying 4 Diamond Paintings lol...Thank you SWTM for opening my eyes up to such beautiful art wrk.

This event has changed my way of thinking about art in general. I have always admired the beauty on the surface, but now I want to know the deeper meaning of what the artist is trying to say. I keep coming back to Isabelle and the Pot of Basil in my mind. The picture is stunning, but, if you know the story behind it, it takes on a darker macabre tone. Thank you and Katie for bringing this genre into the world of diamond painting and for hosting this fun event,

I had never been interested in art (except music) until my daughter started being intereested in it. She had done clay and oil painting and earned herself a free summer art camp during middle school. It was during this time I was introduced to the works of Klimt. I Was actually shocked by his story most of all.

Okay so I have been thinking about this during my parenting taxi service to and from activities.... No for a long time nudity made me inner squirmy s a bit but Luke y mentioned at the end of your video art us meant to push us out of a comfort zone. I try to look at art from multiple viewpoint now, would live to revisit some art museums I saw as a kid and see what my brain thinks now. I'm still in awe and shock over artist in any Era can make paint or draw and make it look like a photograph, that just blows my mind....the shading, the textures etc to make thar art medium look that way is amazing. Fifteen or so years ago, there was an exhibition of bronze sculptures by Edgar Degas that spent some time at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Having always loved Dega's paintings of the dancers, I figured why not take my Mom and go have a look-see, after all how often do works from Degas roll through WI! The sculpture "Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen" was one of the pieces on exhibit, and it was absolutely breathtaking. Just being able to stand there and take it all in was almost a humbling experience. A very special day.

The first kit I did for SWTM2022 (L’Ermitage by Paul Berthon) came to my attention when I was a teenager (I’m in my 60s now). I bought a poster of it from a clearance bin at a store in Southern California. I’ve always loved it and, from my teenage bedroom, to my first apartment, then my first house it has always had a place of prominence. It was not until I found it in a diamond painting kit that I researched it further and learned so much about art nouveau. I’m grateful to you and Katie for this fun and educational event!

The time I was shocked was when my hubby and I were watching the History channel and it showed art work I believe done by DaVinci showing a saint in a dark cave. It just made me see the artist in a different light because he put secrets in his paintings. It was not something I wanted to know about the artist. It said he did this in a lot of his paintings and I was not liking it at all. Usually I cannot figure out what an artist is stating by his paintings. I’ve obviously have a lot to learn about art. Thanks for all the info you share with us! I can’t believe we have two weeks more and that’s it. Well hopefully I will finish my Zodiac by Mucha soon and it’s been great being a part of this event.

I think the first time I was really shocked by art was when I discovered Caravagio...up until then it was all cherubs and angels. Thanks so much for a great video Jessica. I always learn when I watch your videos. Keep them coming. I can't say I've ever been shocked in the way I think you mean but maybe stunned or taken aback would be better descriptions. The very first time I saw, in person and up close, Starry Night by Van Gogh I was mesmerized and I couldn't get over how beautiful the actual artwork was. I had seen a lot of prints and knock off pieces and the real live in person art took .g breath away. Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks for an awesome event. I really appreciate all that you and Katie put into this.

I have always enjoyed the old art pieces. Frankly it doesn't shock me. Art is definitely "eye of the beholder". Just as music, if you don't like it, don't listen/look at it. I hate censorship. My biggest question in my 61 years is how much art did we lose during WW2. Art that is never to be seen again because an individual found it offensive. Sadly, our society is repeating that ideology. It literally scares me. You do beautiful work. Your teaching videos have helped me tremendously. So a very big thank you.

What an excellent video, thank you! I've never participated in Summer with the Masters because, in general, I'm not a fan of the art from that time. I'm someone who loves dark art, and so I don't gravitate towards the Old Masters. That said, some of the art shown in this video is totally up my alley and I adore it. I'd love to do one of these in diamond art form and so perhaps I can have a custom canvass made for next year's event using one of these art pieces. Thanks for opening my eyes to this art.

Not really sure if this fits, since I don't know if it's art and it wasn't shock as much as horror - but one specific thing came to mind. The shoes in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. For most museums I'm fascinated by the history but detached. When I got to those shoes, I stood there and just.broke.down. I've never had such a visceral reaction to seeing an exhibit before. Art or not, that exhibit reminded me history is real people. Hope all is well and you're enjoying the new job!

Firstly, thank you for these thoughtful essays on art. I’m sorry the event is over soon, I’ll miss it. Secondly, I won the paddy wax kit! Whoo hoo! More scents for my collection. THANK YOU!!! Finally, I think I have a blind spot with provocative art. I don’t consume art that is violent, creepy, cruel etc… I don’t care that it’s out there, and I appreciate that art like this can be an agent for change, it’s just not for me. Here is an example, I don’t like landscapes that celebrate “the hunt”. I like dogs, horses and foxes but I’d rather have them depicted in Narnia than in this awful “sport”. Enjoy you new job!!!

Not really the answer you are intending I think, but one of the ways I've been shocked by art is size. When you see pictures, often you get little to no sense of scale. If you have the opportunity to see pieces in person, it can be surprising how large or small the piece actually is.

What an extremely interesting video. My earliest introduction of art was through the Greek Orthodox Church. Our churches are filled with hand painted icons of different Saints. Also the 12 Stations of Jesus life. They have a very distinctive style, rich colors usually painted on wood and with liberal use of gold leaf. About over a decade ago on one of trips to Greece I commissioned a handful of icons. One was in the very traditional style of Greek icons. The othered were in very beautiful rich colors on beautiful wood . All signed by the artists.

When I was first introduced to Leonardo Da Vinci, I was changed by 2 of his paintings. 1. The Last Super 2. The Mona Lisa The last Super brought a tangible "idea/reality" of who Jesus was for me. It brought my faith to a while new level as I felt the gravity of His love and what is sacrifice meant to me. The Mona Lisa change me and my ideas of beauty. I questioned whether the model knew that her likeness would be gazed and admired my millions of people spanning multiple generations.

Witches going to their Sabbath was one that shocked me in a GOOD way. The first time I saw it was in art history class in my 20's, and it was the first time I'd seen older people, fat people, men and women all depicted together in a level playing field. I'd never seen myself (a fat person) in art before unless it was staunchly making fun of or cautioning against... well... being me! I also grew up in a strict christian cult, and seeing something so counter to what I was brought up with was incredibly liberating. I love Zahrtmann's Loki. The artist no doubt had some problematic views on women, but I DO wonder how much of that was a combination of "protesting too much" and a symptom of being queer in a time where queerness could put him in real danger. Either way, he had a way with whimsically disdainful figures!

I can't think of any time I was shocked or changed by art other than my favorite color is blue. *shrug Sorry.

I grew up in a very strict Catholic family and nudity was not something we ever heard of or talked about as children. The first time I saw an image of Michaelangelo's David statue I was shocked that something so risque existed. How things have changed. lol

First I was surprised at a young age that not all art were realistic paintings like portraits, still lifes and such. Second i found out about anti-art that mocked the line of what art is. Such as the famous urinal and bike wheel on a stool. Like art was a joke of society. Never liked that since my studies were at an art school and it is important to me. Also, never in my studies i found out about the artist waterhouse, this event introduced me to more new artists!
